NFL 2009

I am so going to get shitfaced drunk before the game next week so I don't have to see the Bucs get crushed.

Also, seriously, what's up with the going for it on 4th&6 in the red zone when 52 up, then the same when 59 up? Fucking Pats.

Temporary rule: Any post including "running up the score" or alluding to the term in this thread will be removed. Pats' behaviour vis-a-vis scoring warrants a separate thread if needed.

Interesting weekend. Some nice games. Too bad the Seahawks blew. Raiders upsetting Eagles is hilarious. The fieldgoal battles between sucky teams less hilarious.

No more Tatupu, tore peck, out for the season.

The amazing injury plagued Seahawks continue to tally more on the injured reserved list. Going four deep in the depth charts for many positions is not good.

Still four deep is not as bad as last year, some positions went so deep Ron Jeremy felt threatened.

I think the hawks punter actually threw for more yards than hastlebeck this game... boy he was pissed, never seen him that mad before.

Then there was that Pats game, WTH was the score 60 - 0?

kinda like yr fantasy score, eh?

also a huge:  to the Falcons for keeping the Pack closer in NFC North. w00t! (also, fuck the Bears).

Why don't they just fire Zorn? That's lame how they've emasculated him when they're going to inevitably fire him anyway.

Jets lose Jenkins for the year.

They were 8-3 a year ago and couldn't chase Mangini and Favre out of town fast enough. Be lucky to win 8 games all year now.

Holy shit Darren Sproles!
3 returns for a TD already in this game, what the hell?

This "Who Killed the USFL" documentary tonight looks cool. Anybody catch the one about the old Baltimore Colts last week? I missed it, but that Jim Irsay pulled one of the all time sleazy sports owner moves.

don't have a tv right now, everything i watch is either streaming or d/l'ed.

anyway, how 'bout double-D? eh? old man Driver! surpassed Lofton and Sharpe for the Packer's reception record. pretty admirable coming from a no-named 7th round draft pick. dude's been around just making insane plays in GB for so long. i love it. love the guy, too. did you guys see his one handed diving grabs *while* being held/interfered with in the last two Pack games?

Speaking of Sterling Sharp (one of the best ever IMO, too bad his career was cut short). I'm watching the NFL network, goddamn if him and Marshall Faulk haven't let themselves go. And Michael Irvin, he just looks like the tired old crackhead.

Really? I haven't seen NFLN for almost a year. Sharpe and Faulk looked fine a few months ago.

I probably shouldn't go there, I'm kind of puffy and haggard looking compared to me in 1993 too.

edit:
So Richard Seymour says the Raiders will make the playoffs. Playoffs?

Which is of course ridiculous. It's an obvious motivational call-to-arms, which is more leadership than anyone else in that organization has shown in the last 5+ years. Pretty impressive for a guy that's only been on the team 3 weeks. I hope the apathy and ineptitude there don't get him down, he's the kind of cornerstone that could turn the Raiders in the right direction. Poor guy, I don't think he alone can overcome Davis' folly.

And that "Who Killed the USFL?" documentary was pretty cool, you guys should catch it. It was made by the guy in charge of video production, so it's biased and nostalgic. But it was cool to relive how they burst on the scene.

I find the history of the league and it's upstart rivals pretty fascinating.
You have the AFL, with it's wide open downfield passing attack that grew so threatening that the NFL conceded and merged with them.
The USFL which, while financially mishandled contributed a lot of talent (Herschell, Reggie White, Jim Kelly, Steve Young etc.) and innovation (instant replay, 2pt conversion, coach's challenge etc.)
And then debacles like the XFL, and really I don't see how this UFL can survive. UFL has to work on it's marketing, there's a game here in town in a few weeks and I saw a billboard billing the game as "Come See the Coaches" (Cotrell vs. Haslett). That's pretty much a tacit admission that the talent sucks.

I'd love to see an alternative since competition brings out the best, but until the product is there, I have a hard time spending money to support them.

Are we to assume you get NFLN now? You'll never watch horrid ESPN again. :D

Check out Playbook NFC and Playbook AFC. Those are the NFLN shows I miss the most.

No, my old man does. I think I can get it and the RedZone in some premium sports package for 7-8 bucks. I love the more in-depth game breakdowns they do. And the NFL films, I could watch those anytime.

ESPN is so superficial, and they are such unabashed jocksniffers. Jaworsky does good analysis, but he only does MNF now, the rest of their coverage is so...blah. they take the snippets that took me 2 minutes to read out of the newspaper and over produce them into a superfluous 30 minute show. Spare me. That being said, I live about 20 minutes from their HQ and would take a job there at the drop of a hat.

Living between Boston and NYC, I already get inundated with both their radio, TV and print. ESPN might serve the national market well, but they come of really dumb without the backing of local beat guys that are with one team every day. And you got a really passionate, obsessed fanbase in this area, ESPN gives a nice 10,000 foot overview, but the NY guys and Boston writers are the authority on all things Celtics/Yankees/Patriots/Giants/Red Sox etc.
And they even fail at the salacious drama shit compared to the NY Post.
The worst is when ESPN breaks stories that the Boston Globe or some other outlet uncovered without crediting them. "Breaking News, ESPN has learned that..."

Call me crazy, but I can see Miami beating NO this week. And the Raiders have a decent shot this week too.

And they repeat the same 3 headline stories over and over and over all week instead of covering all the games. And their schtick is sooo tired. On NLFN there's no Stewart Scott saying "Booyah!" all the time. AND there are no interruptions for basketball highlights and no interruptions to find out the latest info on the Kobe/Shaq feud.

It's strange that ESPN's college football coverage is actually pretty good.

lulz

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will host the New England Patriots when the National Football League continues its International Series at Wembley Stadium on Sunday, October 25, 2009.

The Buccaneers and Patriots have been two of the NFL’s most successful teams in recent years, combining to win four of the past seven Super Bowls. Both clubs are strong contenders for a return trip to the playoffs this season.

The contest will mark the third consecutive year of a competitive (regular-season) game at Wembley Stadium. On October 26, the New Orleans Saints beat the San Diego Chargers 37-32 in front of an 83,226 crowd, while the New York Giants overcame the Miami Dolphins 13-10 in October 2007 on their way to winning Super Bowl XLII. The NFL has committed to playing at least one game in the United Kingdom for each of the next two seasons.

The game between the Buccaneers and Patriots will take place in Week 7 of the 2009 season and will be shown live in the United States on CBS, kicking off at 5pm UK time (p.m. ET).

The Buccaneers captured Super Bowl XXXVII following the 2002 season and are challenging for their third NFC South division title in the past four years. Tampa Bay will be in the global spotlight prior to next season, as Super Bowl XLIII will be played at Raymond James Stadium on February 1.

The Patriots won Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII, XXXIX following the 2001, 2003 and 2004 seasons and won their first 18 games last season in advancing to Super Bowl XLII. The team is bidding for its sixth consecutive AFC East division championship.

Also, they mention the Tampa Bay Curse. Never heard of it, but if no team beaten by Tampa ever won a Super Bowl, I would guess that's because teams beaten by Tampa tend to be terrible?

It's promotional, what'd you expect? Awfully lot of non-Bucs/Pats jerseys in the stands there. I don't think they care who is playing or why, they just want NFL.

Gee this parity thing is working out great. And these greedy fuckers wonder "Who gets a team first London or LA?" there aren't 32 "professional" QBs in the league now, and the product suffers as a result. Jamarcus Russell, Josh Johnson, Jake Delhomme, and Derek Anderson should not be starters in the NFL. Give (sell) London the Jaguars (don't even need to change the name - has perfect local sponsorship) and there has to be some mercy rule that alows for the league to assasinate Al Davis and move the team back to LA.
More teams is going to make more money, but kill the product. How about another stab at a viable AA system?
