NFL 2009

I was thinking similar thoughts watching the games yesterday but you put it a lot better than I could have.

A game or two like this each week, maybe. But it's almost EVERY game.

It's promotional, what'd you expect? Awfully lot of non-Bucs/Pats jerseys in the stands there. I don't think they care who is playing or why, they just want NFL.
More or less. For a lot of Europeans this is the only shot to see the game.

Hell, I saw about 10 different team jerseys around the city before I first saw a Bucs jersey. Though Tom Brady jerseys were in a vast vast majority and there weren't too many Bucs jerseys. Lots of Dolphins, Giants and Packers jerseys (even saw some of those cheesehead hat thingies).

But even though it was a blowout victory for the Pats, the game was still awesome. It was actually never boring, and there was a ton of stuff happening. Good times. I'm definitely going to try and get into the next London game, too. 85,000 people in the stadium having a ton of fun, though they did boo for the kneel with a minute to go on the clock (European mentality isn't used to that).

High points:
- Seats at the 45-yard line, right below the second ring, which means right below the cameras and to the side of the press area. Basically some of the best seats in the awesome Wembley stadium.
- Bucs Cheerleaders
- Wave that went around the stadium 7 times. That was pretty insane and impressive to see.
- 2 interceptions on Tom Brady, Aqib Talib and Tanard Jackson not only got those, but also managed to largely shut down a lackluster Moss in the endzone (who, I might add, is available for trade: I'll consider any good offer)
- The touchdown pass to Bryant was awesome
- Some pretty good plays from the Bucs and I got the impression that there was much more potential to this team than people ascribe them. Josh Freeman looked like a rookie when he came in in the last quarter, but one with a good arm, a bit of scrambling in him, and a huge physique. The Pats had some trouble getting him down.

Low points:
- Suckass pre-game artist
- Johnson trhowing a pick 6 on his second pass, and then throwing a terrible pass for another pick a while later
- The American homer Pats fan right behind me, who couldn't stop going on about how the Pats were perfect in everything and couldn't fail at anything ever, while trying to talk business (and whining that he was probably going to get fired) with some outside consultants on whatever gambling site he worked for. Then he got embarrassed by them at the end of the game as he explained that he had bet 5% of his net worth on the spread, they essentially called him a dumbass for that (and rightfully so, 5% is insane), until he defended himself by saying he only had $5,000 to his name.
Of course, he also managed to throw over his beer which ruined the fun little book on the game we got. Which we didn't find out until after he was gone (yeah, thanks for the heads up there fuckhead).

Note: not all Pats fans are bad. Met a couple of cool Pats fans in a bar after the game.

And that "Who Killed the USFL?" documentary was pretty cool, you guys should catch it. It was made by the guy in charge of video production, so it's biased and nostalgic. But it was cool to relive how they burst on the scene.

I find the history of the league and it's upstart rivals pretty fascinating.
You have the AFL, with it's wide open downfield passing attack that grew so threatening that the NFL conceded and merged with them.
The USFL which, while financially mishandled contributed a lot of talent (Herschell, Reggie White, Jim Kelly, Steve Young etc.) and innovation (instant replay, 2pt conversion, coach's challenge etc.)
And then debacles like the XFL, and really I don't see how this UFL can survive. UFL has to work on it's marketing, there's a game here in town in a few weeks and I saw a billboard billing the game as "Come See the Coaches" (Cotrell vs. Haslett). That's pretty much a tacit admission that the talent sucks.

I'd love to see an alternative since competition brings out the best, but until the product is there, I have a hard time spending money to support them.

Yeah, Donald Trump is pretty much responsible for torpedoing the USFL. If it weren't for him their would be football in the spring...

Also, Johnson actually ran a flea flicker in the game, but threw the pass just short of a wide-open Bryant. Awesome to see, though.

Lower-quality football, probably.

They didn't pretend otherwise, and like Prez said, it wasn't until greedy, glory hounds like Trump got involved and prematurely tried to take on the NFL that they failed. The byline was Small Potatoes: Who Killed the NFL?, small potatoes being the term Trump uses in the documentary to dismiss his failure. They actually succeeded in prosecuting an anti-trust/monopoly lawsuit against the NFL, and won...like $3.50, small potatoes indeed.

The USFL was small time, but at a period when the NFL went on strike and was playing scabs, their reputation as the No Fun League intact, and stealing high profile stars out of college, something like 3 Heisman trophy winners signed immediately to the USFL.
It was probably more fun an innovative than the NFL as their adopting a lot of USFL rules to improve the game demonstrates.

I'm getting really sick of hearing about the undefeateds. Denver and NO are not going to the SB, can we temper the hype a little bit?
Indy's undefeated and nobody's getting their panties in a bunch. Why? Because Indy will go 12-4 yet again, and (with the exception of one flukey year) choke their way out of the playoffs due to a shaky Manning performance like they always do. Undefeated, but haven't played a team above .500 yet. Wow.

Well, maybe. We don't really know where the USFL would have went if it was given optimal conditions to grow. I don't know how many people are aware how many amazing football players that go by without ever getting a chance to play in the nfl. Besides something like 187 USFL players went on to play in the NFL. The USFL also had a bunch of NFL Hall of Famers.

Like I said, impossible to predict where the USFL would have ended up but at the very least the USFL could put a minor league farm style approach to American Football.

From that perspective it's interesting to see how the USFL did not seem to be aimed at being NFL2, but UFL clearly is. And from what I've been told about the USFL it sure had a lot of excitement around it compared to the tepid response to the UFL. Perhaps they had the better approach, dunno.

It sure would be good for the NFL to have a good farm league again. NFL Europe actually did pretty good at this, producing guys like Kurt Warner and Adam Vinatieri, not to mention having fun experimenting with rules in such leagues.

Ah well. I think everyone's agreed it would be great for the NFL, but hecka hard time making it profitable.

Haselbeck's daughter was run over by a dirtbike, he's pretty stressed out and spending lots of time at the hospital. This week is looking more bleak by the minute for the beat up Seahawks.

Glad you had fun. I didn't see the game on TV but from the stats it looked like it was decent to watch with all the interceptions.

Funny. The story of how the kneeldown got started is an NFL legend. Teams always used to run the ball up the middle to end the game until the Giants lost to the Eagles because a fumble was returned for a TD with seconds left on the clock.

You guys need to turn on ESPN, they've uncovered this interesting story about Brett Favre, apparently he's playing his old team, not sure if you were aware of that. Thank goodness ESPN is around to remind us, apparently he played for the Packers way back when too, in case you were living in a cave the last 16 years.
Don't feel bad if you missed it, I'm sure we'll be treated to the full Favre Retrospective Recap every 5 minutes until Sunday.

All other games this weekend have been cancelled.

I'll make a prediction: in the unlikely event that the Packers manage to win this weekend, the first hints of Vikings fans turning on Favre will begin to appear. If it goes that way the Packers will be 5-2 and tied for the division lead.

Everyone seems to be picking the Packers for what that's worth.

I have no dog in this fight.
I kind of like the idea of Brett having this vendetta, but he's too much of a selfish prick to get behind.
And Ted Thompson isn't very likable either, but this whole thing started with Brett giving his resignation. He'd be a weak GM if he flip-flopped and let Favre hold them hostage like the Vikes have.

Call it schadenfreude, but I'd like to see one of two things happen, either Favre gets back the NFC championship game, or he has a late year meltdown like last year costing his team a playoff spot with the most mindbafflingly stupid INTs known to man. No middle ground.

aside from the zombie-stare...i don't get the TT hatred. i really don't. it's ALL OVER Packerland, and not just from Favrelings.

Totally understandable. I mean, he let the obvious SUPER BOWL CHAMPION 2010 leave. Who cares that he was over the hill and his replacement turned out to be one of the best QBs in the league? MAGIC FAVRE! SUPER BOWL!

So much for "everyone". Homers always know better. The Packers are not horrible this year (they destroy bad teams and are competative with most good teams), but their o-line is a shambles. That plays right into the Vikings strength. With Chad Clifton out it's even worse.

No one expected the o-line to be better than average, but I don't know anyone who predicted they would stink it up this bad.

fucking sigh. when are the Pack going to be able to compete? and fuck me is Rodgers injured or what? i think i'd rather just turn a fuckin' cheek than watch Flynn all year.

Dammit, looks like I missed an awesome game there, except for the result. And the Favre-sucking, of course. But the highlights make me afraid of next week. Probably going to be another spanking of the Bucs who don't have the pass-rush to abuse the Pack O-line.

Also, what were the Jaguars doing? Did they really almost abandon the run against the Titans when MoJo busts 2 80-yard TDs on the Titans? What the fuck is wrong with those coaches
I'm waiting for Pocket Hercules to go all 'Why the fuck am I not getting this ball' on them again. 8 touches to your undisputable star player against a leaky D-line?
Though Garrard blocking for him at the goal-line on one of his 80-yard runs was awesome. Now that's effort.

How about the Dolphins actually finishing a game, though it looked like a really ugly game. But hem, Ted Ginn getting two 100-yd TD returns? He can do it as long as he doesn't need to catch passes.

Not to defend Favre or anything, but Aaron Rogers has yet to take his team to the play-offs while Favre took essentially the same Packers team to the NFC Championship game where they barely lost to the eventual Superbowl Champions.

The Vikings did pretty much allow Favre to hold them hostage, but they are sitting pretty at the top of their division while the Packers drop down to 4-3 and look like they aren't going to make the playoffs this year with their inconsistency.
