Oh yeah it's just around the corner right?

Actually one of my university professors was a guest lecturer, come over for a year or two from Boston College. He was cool enough, but then I guess he's too intellectual to fully inhale the stinky waft of arrogance that pervades the Boston area.

God I hate Boston. I don't plan to go there, it might change my opinion.

The best thing about that 1985 Super Bowl was the Patriots attempt to compete with the Bears' Super Bowl Shuffle rap video. The outcome of the game was decided by bluster before the teams ever set foot on the field.

come now. let's wait 'til you spend time there before making a decision. it's a beautiful city.

I'm sure the town is nice and there are some really great fans in the Boston area.... but when I think of "Boston sports fans" all I see is bandwagoning loudmouths who don't even know who Bill Buckner is.

You should see how many Die Hard patriots/red sox/ and celtics fans there are in AZ. Most of them are under 20 years old and have never been outside of AZ.

Also, I love the Patriots. I don't know about their futile version, I haven't been following this sport that long, but they've fielded some pretty kick-ass teams and given us some great Superbowls in the time I've been watching it.
Well, that's the thing, we had 40 years of futility. One hall of famer in all that time. Can anybody here, without cheating name him or any other Patriot from 1960-1993?
They had 1 and 2 win seasons when I was in HS (thank you Detroit for burying that record!).
I know it's hard to imagine now, but they were a tragically horrible team for a very long time. You had to laugh really.

I don't know of any effort as concerted at turning me off the Patriots as the Pats fanbase puts in tho'. It's almost as if you're jealously guarding your like of the franchise, and the rest of us can't go near your Precious.
It's me birthday, and I wantsss it. Heh, I'm just stirring the pot, NFL news is pretty slow. NOt trying to come of as a know-it-all, but I live equidistant from NYC and Boston, so I get inundated by their newpapers, TV, radio etc. I'm sure everyone else will agree, when you're in tune with your local market, the national media (ESPN, FOX etc.) is laughably tone-deaf to what is really going on.
The fanbase has changed a lot actually, it used to be very blue-collar, lots of drinking and fighting. God help the hapless Jet fan who took the ride up. Now it's very antiseptic and corporate, because only yuppies can afford tickets.

It's sad, around here we call them "Pink Hats" - it's a derogatory term for soft, casual, bandwagon fans who jumped on board when the trophies started showing up. They started by selling pink red sox, patriots whatever hats in an obvious move to pander to female fans.

BTW I love Phoenix/Scottsdale, awesome town. Beautiful women. The best thing about AZ women, they are so many of them that they don't think of themselves as hot in comparison.

Dude, it's the hugest college town, impossible to be too intellectual. The arrogance you smell is really a defense mechanism, I think Bostonian have an inferiority complex with bigger NYC so nearby. But it's scale is what makes it, it's not overwhelming and way more digestible than NYC.

It really couldn't be more embarassing if it tried to be.

Your preaching to the choir. AZ is AWESOME. Not too crowded, not to ritzy, open carry state... whats not to love? I love the AZ sports franchises too. Cards are on their way up (they've had the talent for years but this was the first year they really played to their potential), D-Backs are sucking - but at least ticket prices are really cheap. I bought a 28 game pass that covers every Sat and Sun home game for 300 bucks. My seat is lower level in left field home run territory.

I want to thank everyone for not bringing up the F word. I'd like to declare a moratorium on that topic until his signing is actually announced if we could.

meh. there's no real point, is there? it's something only n00bs or NFL network are still talking about. n00bs because he's one of 10 football names they actually know and NFL network because they're like the fucking National Enquirer of sports casting.

i've got to say man...i'm SORELY disappointed that 3 or 4 of us are the only people hangin' in the offseason on this site full of gamerfags and eurofags.

fags.

also, Cim: about the inferiority complex between NYC and Beanville...that probably has some to do with it, but i've lived in both cities and never really felt that sort of animosity. it was a whole other thing...and i wouldn't be surprised if it goes back just as hard as the GB/Milwaukee vs Chicago city feuds (i.e. Yanks and Sox). it's like fucking Palestine and Israel. nobody in either Boston or NYC knows quite why they hate the other city so much but i'll be goddamned if i didn't catch MAJOR shit for answering "Boston" whenever people in NYC asked me where i moved from. people in NYC are also much kinder, gentler people (actually fairly polite when not in motion) than Bostonians by leaps and bounds.

"where'd you move from?"

"Boston."

"Fuck you, i hate that fucking city!"

"ummm..."

"..."

Oh, c'mon, Twinks. It's off-season now. People who ignore gridiron in this period are just being smart. There's nothing out there but endless F-tripe and Ochocinco dominating the attention. Oh and McNair dying :( RIP

Oh and Football Outsiders Almanac just came out, that's always good.

Exactly. I might come to like it. I'd rather hate it.

After watching films like The Departed and Good Will Hunting, I can only conclude that Boston is the shit.

Also, is there any reason whatsoever, at all, to be following American Football during off-season? It seems duller than all the bullshit transfer rumours on the European football scene during off-season.

is shit or is the shit? the Departed is a pretty accurate portrayal of the type of ball-busting atmosphere of the city. try being surrounded by that shit for a long time and then moving down to the "polite" (s'all fake pretenses) south. whoa fuckin' nelly were people not ready for my attitude.

because what the fuck else do we do? watch fucking soccer or baseball? sheee-it.

The shit. It must be the shit.

This was not some hilarious form of English that you can sig, sorry to disappoint you.

The worst part of that shit is whenever you want to play cards with the boys now, there's always some self-appointed expert who watches that shit that's going to nickle-and-dime everybody out of a $10 buy in game. We have 2 world class casinos here, but these numbuts want to dazzle everybody with some shit they picked up from a Doyle Brunson book in a game with what probably amounts to a 5$ pot. Holy fucking transparent Napoleon Complex, Batman.

I tried watching the NBA & NHL playoffs here and there, and while not bad, it's a poor substitute.

I hate to get my hopes up after the USFL folded, the XFL disaster, and the meaninglessness that is Arena Football. But football needs an off-season alternative and I'm hoping the UFL can be viable, especially since we're getting a team in Hartford. How awesome is that?
Pro football really needs a B-league for development and can fill the offseason withdrawl.
I'm hopefull, but historically this shit always folds. Hopefully they can learn from all those mistakes.

UFL working would be awesome. B-leagues are vital to the health of any league, and while the CFL does that job ok-ish it's not a true B-league. NFL Europe did an ok job, providing the NFL with the likes of Kurt Warner and Adam Vinatieri before they were done, but was kind of far away for American viewers to become aware of said budding stars.

UFL will likely fold. But it'd be awesome if it works. Maybe the other B-leagues were just before their time, and considering the size and popularity of the sport right now, now's the time. We'll see.

The signing of Vick would be little more than a baldfaced publicity stunt, but would definitely propel them into the general consciousness instantly.
Thing is I'd love watching guys like him and Vince Young get a second chance in another league, they are exciting as all hell, but quite frankly not NFL caliber QBs. I mean, I don't think I've ever seen someone as exciting as Vince Young circa that Rosebowl vs. USC. The guy is fucking astounding! But neither one will ever be an NFL QB, not to say they can't find greener pastures.

There's so many reasons why a B-league should succeed and so many examples of how not to do it. Probably shitty timing what with the economy, but I hope this gets off the ground.

Yes. I hate those people. With a passion. Especially when they can't shut up about how someone should never have called their bet and sucked out on them, and they go on about them even days later. Get the fuck over it.

I make a living off of poker, and these are the kinds of people that both scare away people who just want to have fun and gamble, and annoy the piss out of everyone else.
Seriously, if you ever encounter someone who claims to be a good player but follows the pattern of correcting everyone's play constantly, and whining about people sucking out, they are never actually good players.

American Football, and any sport for that matter, does not need an off-season alternative. It isn't viable, and a constant stream of sports would probably just kill it due to overexposure anyway.

Uh, Sander, you might want to rethink that statement, considering football has one of the biggest off-season alternatives in the world in the Continental Cups and World Cup, one every alternate year.

Plus football seasons last 40+ weeks. The entire gridiron season, including the pre-season, lasts 25 (26?), that's quite a difference maker in how long you gotta wait.
