NFL - The Thread, '08.

eh. i was just pissed. they really looked like hell today. just really bad in so many areas...especially the completely absent run game.

And I'm not sure I agree. What do you think happens to the Colts if they lose Wayne? Harrison lost his mojo, Gonzalez is too young to be considered a legitimate threat, and Clark is no better than Witten. Essentially the same situation, only Dallas could fall back on a superior running game while the Colts don't have the running talent or defense to do that.

I think if TO gets hurt/goes crazy (let's not forget his volatile personality) Dallas takes a bigger hit on offense than any other team losing their primary receiver. As you say, Indy losing Wayne goes to Harrison and Gonzo. I consider that a much better tandem than Crayton and Austin/Hurd. I also trust Peyton Manning to pick up the slack more than I trust Romo.

The only comparable team I can think of is San Diego. If Chambers got hurt, they would take a hit too. But then again Chambers is not as good as TO, and Vincent Jackson and the rest of the Chargers receivers are better than what Dallas has after TO.

Dallas is clearly trying to win the championship this year, so I'd be surprised if they don't make a play for Boldin, Roy Williams, or Tory Holt.

On a related note, Troy Aikman is calling the Dallas/Washington game this afternoon, and he said if Jason Witten got hurt Dallas wouldn't make the playoffs. I was surprised to hear that.

I watched most of the Vikings/Titans game today, and I have to say I'm very impressed with the Titans. They're much better with Kerry Collins than they were with Vince Young, and they might have the best defense in the league.

That one caught me off guard too, but then I figured that while TO is the normal goto guy Witten is usually it for bail-outs and short passing situations (though Crayton handled that pretty much this game). I can see Aikman's point.

Also, hey man did Jason Campbell look sharp no? Told ya so. :look:

Get Samkon back I say! In Gado we trust!

ugh. seperated shoulder? if Rodgers is out, these games won't even be worth watching and i'll have to do like i did as a kid and go to the next closest town and root for my childhood-favorite rivals, Da Bears (who are looking tight in the first few minutes of this quarter).

can we trade Ryan Grant for a free bratwurst dinner for all Packers fans? i mean...at least the fans would get something out of that deal.

OK he showed his upside today, in Fort Worth no less.
Nice to see the best rivalry in the NFL get rekindled.

That's disgraceful mang, what kind of front-running Pack fan are you anyway?

I hope you're not expecting any sympathy from this New Englander.
You want to know what's more useless than tit's on a bull? Randy Moss without Tom Brady.
Matt freakin Cassell. Don't get me started.
We went from Super Bowl favorite to Miami's wipping boy, helping them in one afternoon to match their total wins from last season and probably season scoring too.
And our defense?
I love Teddy Bruschi and all, but he doesn't tackle people so much anymore as he grabs them as they're running over him.

no man, i feel you, i do. but really...the Pack don't stand a single quarter of a chance without Rodgers. they barely stand a chance with him this year. during preseason i said "i bet this year they're a wildcard spot, next year playoff contenders, third year...possible superbowl contenders." at this point...without him...there won't even be any point watching them. i mean, really. i've already put my fist into the wall this year. i don't need anymore house-work to do because of my under-achieving team with our under-achieving running backs.

besides, i'm not saying i'm suddenly a Bears fan...i've been rooting for them since the beginning of the season. like i said, i grew up in the Walter Payton era...had his jerseys as a Packer fan because as a kid i had nobody else near me to look up to, football-wise. that Bears-love won't die no matter what the rivalry.

so i'm saying, if i don't have the Pack to root for this year...it's Da Bears that gets my vote.

no disgrace, dude.

I can understand an out of conference team, I might even consider myslef a "passive fan" of the Giants since I live in a state that is in NE and the tri-state area so I can't avoid the exposure. Yeah, I guess I've been to Giants games before just because it's the NFL.

I don't know, I just have this feeling about the Bears. As long as Rex Grossman is on the team, he's going to wind up starting somehow. I just have a vibe, and it's not a good thing for Chi-town.
Rex Grossman's career has an uncanny Rasputin-esque ability to avoid death.

I thought Grossman was out for the count on the account that their #2 is a might better than him? I tend to agree with you on him, but then again I've always liked poking fun at ol' Rex.

I'm starting to think maybe we're overselling T.O.

They didn't run Barber much this game, and - count ' em - 20 of the 58 offensive plays were designed specifically for T.O.

That's ridiculous (and no doubt induced by a lot of whining on Owens' part). And it didn't work: TO had 7 catches for 71 (1 TD) and the Bwoys lost.

Expect a TO-style meltdown if this continues. And that could indeed hurt the Bwoys, if not because of TO's value then at least because meltdowns are always a pain.

PS: also, with the Redskins breaking out, how scary is the NFC East?

Well, I think TO has been so well behaved since he got to Dallas, we kind of forgot what kind of a cancer he can be. Remember everyone was talking about when, not if he would get disgruntled and go back to his back biting ways. Now that they lost a game, his true colors are coming out.
You think Wade Phillips is going to put him in his place?
TO can be really dangerous when he has his tantrums, remember Philly benched and deactivated him he was so detrimental to the team. That's the only way you can deal with an asshole like that and his slimy agent:

I've got to say, he had a few drops in that game too.

Jerry Jones better be carefull with TO, Pacman, Tank et al. That team is two crack pipes, half a dozen strippers and an AK short of fiasco town. Maybe they should bring in an ethics consultant like Michael Irvin.

Just random but, who thought it was a good idea to give Emmitt Smith a microphone and a paycheck? The man stumbles over his words so much, he makes George Bush look as articulate as WF Buckely.

No. In fact, I think this may underline the obvious problem in the Dallas organisation: Jerry Jones is the boss and Wade is just the guy who carries his towels. Unless Jerry agrees on whistling TO back - which needs to be done, and any sane football organisation would do it either privately or publicly - Wade is not going to do it.

And that's a problem, because Jerry likes his pet projects, and he isn't apt to rebuke them.

That's just the way it is when all the reigns are in one guy's hands. Sometimes it works like with Jerry Jones in Dallas or AJ Smith with the Chargers, and often it deteriorates like with Al Davis for the Raiders.

I credit Jim Zorn I do... (sorry my Seattle love is so hard to suppress!)

Linehan out.
Kiffin out. - Man, that was a bizarre press conference with Al Davis. He was really more lucid and articulate than I thought considering I haven't seen him speak in a long time. But he's like that drunk at the bar at closing time, somebody needs to take the car keys away for everybody's sake.
And as a Pats fans, after the Darryl Stingley hit I have no sympathy for the Raiders and I'm glad the "tuck rule" game sent our franchises hurtling in opposite directions. Us to our first Super Bowl and dynasty-dom, and them in the gutter.

Oh and thanks for Randy Moss and LaMont Jordan, Al.

Hey Cimm, is it true you Pats fan take professional pride in being the only fans more annoying and obnoxious than NFC East fans?

I would tend to lump my Philly/NYC/Boston brethren into a "Golden Triangle" of athletic animosity. They really bring out the worst in each other too. And it really transcends sport, people around here are curt, abrasive, wound-tight and in your face in general. The rest of America is far too nice, friendly, and laid-back. I don't trust them one bit, what are they hiding anyway?

Just be glad I'm not a baseball fan, nothing is more annoying than the Yankees/Sox or Mets/Phillies winging you get around here. That shit goes back generations and generations too.

Anyway, as much as it pains me to say it, looks like the Giants are the best team in the league until someone beats them.

And I was wondering, if the Jets wear Titans throwback uniforms.
Does that mean that Tennesse will wear Oilers jerseys?
Will the Ravens wear Browns jerseys? Baltimore Colts jerseys?
These are the important questions that occupy my work day.

o god i agree. i miss it up there.

*biding time in Chapel Hill until i can break free and return to Boston!*

New York fans are the worst because they're ubitquitous. Also their accents aren't as funny as Boston fans.

Midwesterners seem to be considered "nice" by people in other parts of the US, which suggests to me that people in other parts of the country are unfamiliar with Viking fans. They're horrible - obnoxious, whiney, sore losers. It's not completely their fault, though. Being a Viking fan means a lifetime of dashed high expectations. Every year the Vikings look like they should be a good team, and every year they end up being a disappointment. This goes back decades; they've been to four Super Bowls and lost every time. Detroit fans are frustrated, but the Lions organization is so awful that they're hopeless, so they never have high expectations.

BTW, in case it hasn't become completely obvious yet, the Packers are in trouble. They could survive Rodgers missing a game or two (especially against Atlanta), but their defense is close to needing its own medical ward. Hawk was injured in the Tampa game, and Cullen Jenkins is now out for the season too. They were a bit thin at DL to begin with; now it's really bad. They still have Jolly and Cole, I think, but after that there's no one. Until they get Pickett and Harrell back - not to mention Hawk - the run defense is going to be a problem. I don't know how they're going to stop Turner, especially late in the game.

At best they're going to have a rough four or five game stretch.

Anybody ever use/know of a reputable online sportsbetting site?

Contemplating whether or not there is such a thing seems to be an oxymoron to me...
