NFL - week 13 seems like as good a week as any

People are ragging on the Lions ... but damn...do you see how much that franchise is improving?

Yea, I definitely noticed that this season. Bit of a shocker, really. Not as much a shocker as the Pack, or even the Cowboys' return from two-TD territory versus the Lions (2 MINUTES?!?! THE HELL?) but still... They were almost in the playoffs. Which for the Lions is, like, whoa.

But if you look at the way they're growing variances in their offence...they basically pounded the ball against Dallas and almost came out with a win. They were one fumble away, too bad about that one.

Don't forget the horrible officiating. There was that one awful booth review where the Cowboy was CLEARLY out of bounds before he had control of the ball....and there was the defensive holding call against the Lions where the guy barely touched the Cowboy....and that's just when I was watching the game. My dad told me they made a crappy call that let the Cowboys have their first touchdown.

Though to be fair, it's not like the Lions didn't make their own mistakes. I'm looking at you, clutch missed field goal mistake. Grr.

Well...maybe. Although for sure, the "spiking the ball" penalty should. Lions got one of those too....really screwed with their momentum.

You think the Raiders are worse than the niners? Now I'll admit that the Raiders suck, and have for a few years now, but at LEAST they have something to look forward to.

Since the Niners are my team, yeah I think they are better than the Raiders by default. Now I never claimed my illusions of grandeur were absolute truth but, we do have a (potentially very good) solid young defense. Who knows, maybe some good talent at WR and OL will help out Alex and Gore next year to make us a force to be reckoned with( I pray).

Seriously, if you can go toe-to-toe with a Superbowel favourite like that it's no longer time to call it one of the worst franchises out there. That's purely the Oakland Raiders, now.

So the raiders are worse than the 0-13 Dolphins? And the Rams, and the Jets?

Heh, I am probably crazy as hell for continuing to pull for the lost cause that is the Niners, but I'm not "that" insane (yet).

You think the Raiders are worse than the niners? Apart from having a better record, they play in the AFC, not the NFC, the conference loaded with teams that couldn't win games to save their lives. Now I'll admit that the Raiders suck, and have for a few years now, but at LEAST they have something to look forward to.

Oh... See, I was raised to despise the Raiders... That good ol rivalry never will die for me.

BN, you and I had the same fleeting thought about Seattle in the Superbowl but... I think both of us *knock on wood* don't want to say much about that match up. It would be equally scary as it is exciting!

As a 9er fan I've come to terms that Alex Smith is garbage. I had a feeling that he wasn't going to be shit in the NFL - but my blind allegiance to the 9ers made me actually think that he could have been successful. I guess if he would have had top notch coaching he could've turned out to be a productive player; but lets face it - he's had 3 O-Coordinators since he's been in the NFL and the BEST one was Norv Turner....

I think the O-Line is still young and hopefully they will get better - but they don't help themselves on the ground because no one is afraid of them in the air. We lose our first round pick to NE (gasp) but we get Indy's instead. Hopefully there's still a viable QB on the board by the time we draft.

Alex is still pretty young (youngest starting QB in NFL), I say give him another year or two. After that, oh well another 1st round QB lost to third string history.

Yeah, i had to deal with some of that too. The way I see it, there are two things that can happen:

1. He can pull a David Carr

2. He can pull an Eli Manning and develop over time into a good QB

I'm hoping that the second comes true.

*spit-take*

Gawddammit you own me a keyboard. That was hilarious!

Eli Manning...

- has mediocre talent

- has no leadership skills

- was still only drafted #1 because of his last name

- still can't lead a team out of a hole

The Giants would be such a better team with anyone else behind the gun. Hell, stick Sage Rosenfels in there and you'd have a play-off contender.

Eli? Eli has a frikkin' completition percentage of 58.3 and 17 ints to 18 TDs. That's garbage, that's utter shit.

Is it as bad as Carr? No, Carr really is utter, utter shit. But Manning is still pure garbage.

Alex Smith is getting too much flak. He's currently working in an offensive system that just isn't working, nobody is operating well because the coordinating and coaching is shit, even Frank Gore isn't getting anything done. I'd bet the kid would be loads better under decent coaching.

Alex Smith is a system quarterback...

And Eli Manning has the talent, he just doesn't have the experience, and I've seen Burris drop multiple passes in a game, how do you think that affects his confidence. And the last time I checked, the giants had a winning record and were on track to make it to the playoffs...

Burris is an incredible talent, dropped passes or no. Without him, Manning would be shit. Where does that put Manning? Not in the "talented" slot, talented QBs can turn mediocre talent into greats, like Brady did, but even guys like Kitna and Hasselbeck have done it.

Eli? Eli got shit.

As for winning record. That's funny. I bet you would've defended them when they were 6-2 last season, too. At that point, I said "they'll skid" and look...that's what they did.

They'll probably make the playoffs again, on the strength of everyone except Eli, and then they'll be one-and-out.

Is it that hard to face that Eli was a mistake?

The "experience" remark is ridiculous. He was drafted a year after Carson Palmer, yet Palmer has been great for 3 years now. That's a talent. San Diego is being miscoached like crazy this year, but even now Philip Rivers looks better than Eli with a slightly inferior receiving squad, and he sure as hell looked better last year, and he'll look better next year.

"confidence"? This is a professional sport, not a kiddie league.

Eli is pretty tough though, he will play through the pain and that wins respect from me. Even if he is a friggin Manning.

Yeah, Chambers is inferior...

Whenever Eli Manning does something wrong, people ceaselessly rip on him for it. Why? For no other reason than his last name. They expect with that name that he should throw 35 TDs, go 12-4, and win a superbowl. Were he any other QB, he would be praised for leading his team to the playoffs.

I don't see Jason Campbell being ripped for 12 TDs and 11 picks. I don't see Kyle Boller being ripped for 8 TD's and 9 picks. And Jon Kitna...15 TDs and 12 picks, and, until last week, he was hailed by all to be the team MVP and the one who would triumphantly lead the reborn Lions to the playoffs. And how about Vince Young? Would you believe 7 TDs and SIXTEEN picks? All I ever hear about him is "He's developing".

So before thoroughly ripping Eli for not living up to his brother's greatness, look at what else is out there.

Mannings not half-bad, but he's not New York City material. I can tell you people therre want intense, swaggering, driven champions. Eli's "aww shucks" hayseed routine doesn't play in NYC.

Anyway, Tom Brady is making a mockery of the NFL. He needs only 4 TDS to tie Manning. With lowly NYJ, winless 'fins, and beat up Giants to finish up the year, he'll smash that record to smitherenes. Moss needs 4TDs to break Rice's record. And the perfect season is looking more and more possible.

The most ridiculous thing is that Brady has only 5 INTs. That's fucking obscene. Manning and Romo have had more than that in single games this year.

You forgot Matt Leinhart how could anyone forget the spectacularity that is Leinhart? :)

I hear the Patriots are installing special basketball score boards for the game against the Jets.
