NMA Fallout 3 preview and Q&A

Good job on the preview!

Am I the only one that thinks that this is the preview that presents Fallout 3 in the most positive light? Oh the irony!

While my opinion on the game has improved a bit, I'm still fairly disappointed and reallyu don't see much hope of it fitting in with my tastes (ah...Van Buren  ).

I'm very sad about the BOS...man, how can they screw such a great faction up like that.

No. I thought, myself, that the tone of the preview and the thoughts at the end didn't represent my feelings on the details that were written either.

I actually feel that the points that were revealed and cleared up were mostly positive for me.

From skills like science and repair being used for dialogue options, the ability to blind an opponent to the more details about VATS were all more on the optimistic side of what I had assumed would be in Fallout 3.

A lot of it, as Brother None mentioned, had been revealed elsewhere and the only real negative thing revealed (for me) is the comment that dialogue wasn't an option with supermutants.

Realism has never been of the utmost importance to me, so something like the Behemouth using a Car door as a shield doesn't bother me (I even find it somewhat cool sounding, like the shopping cart of corpses).

Good job on getting the information out there guys, even though I dissagree with some of the conclusions. I just donated to NMA, through paypal, in fact I feel it was a job so well done.

Well, "impressions" can never be put down on paper. We put in so much details so people could form their own opinion, but there's always the "you weren't there" factor, hence the thoughts written at the end. Obviously they can't derive directly from the summary of the demo, because that's just a halfway station.

Nonetheless, at the end of the day it's still just an opinion, and can be freely disagreed with

Indeed. Which is why I commended you for the depth of information given.

I certainly understand the "you weren't there" factor, though, I think its been made pretty clear to me that my perception on games is significantly different from the majority 'round here.

I wasn't looking to pick a fight. Only agreeing with the poster above me that I, too, actually found your preview to shed mostly positive light on the game.

I knew it!

I was thinking about it this weekand:

"Oh well the GC started, I bet Kharn will visit Leipzig in his Caravan"

"You weren't there" applies to the majority here as much as it does to you. They'll probably draw the same conclusions as me where you might not, though. Where we'll all end on the opinion scale remains to be seen.

Perhaps. If people like what they hear, they'll like what they hear. What I care more about is the information being reliable and transferred neutrally, rather than hypes and inaccurate info. If people still like the game after hearing after about it, accurately, then great, I wish them much fun with it. As long as we don't have a repeat of Oblivion's situation.

Great preview Brother None and SuAside. And Silencer, sorry to hear you couldn't get in... Hope it doesn't kills your "always" friendly mood :P

anyways good read

Wow, great to hear you guys got to preview it. Looks like it's going to be a very action-oriented game indeed.

You should have told Hines that you're from NMA, though. Straight to his face, after you interviewed him. I would have loved to see his reaction.

I hope that after hearing about all this he'll realize that the people at NMA are in fact reasonable and capable of constructive criticism, not the rabid fanboys that some think they are.

Keep up the good work guys:)

As for the reviewed content: some good news, some bad, mostly even score. Damn good writing, I should mention;)

I think BethPeople should get a copy of FOB nailed to their desks (or better - heads), the BoS chapter especially and fix that part ASAP. Well, that one and the others too, to be sincere...

As for the dialogs (for me the most important part of any RPG, since I'm a non-combat type player) - still more I'd expect after Morrowind/Oblivion, sure hope they do at least something in that direction.

Great job guys.

Shame you had to sneak in - did they have snipers in place for anyone representing the Codex? :P

Is there any word on human enemies outside the vault? All the focus in the demo seems to be on wasting mutants/monsters - I'm vaguely curious as to how raiders and human enemies will be implemented, or will it predominantly be a monster bash (as I now suspect)?

Anyway, once again - well done (and I hope all that bloom hasn't hurt your eyes too much)

I'm glad to see that all the calling and emailing people resulted in a great preview :)

Great write-up, guys. Hopefully helping you guys get in will get some of the people to stop emailing me complaining that I said Fallout 3 looked fun

(And yes, despite the hatred of him in most parts Fallout-related, Pete actually is a very nice guy.)

Heh, but we said Fallout 3 looks fun, too  Maybe we'll be receiving your hatemail from now on.

Thanks again for all the help, Brendon!

Paradise Falls, to my memory, was mentioned somewhere as being raider-something. There'll be human "enemies," sure, but I dunno how many or in what form, wasn't discussed.

NMA: In 2004, Tim Cain stated in a PC Zone interview that Fallout's combat was meant to show "how popular and fun turn-based combat could be, when everyone else was going with real-time or pause-based combat.", so why did Bethesda go against that? Wouldn't it also have been a lot easier to not naming the game Fallout 3 and simply naming it "Fallout: Something", thereby starting your own series with your own views without leaving yourself open to much fan criticism?

Pete Hines: We're making the sequel as we think it would be best in the modern age and how it would work best today. This means taking full advantage of all modern technology and first person to facilitate immersion. There is no reason today not to do so. We also didn't want to make our 'own' series because we want to make a true sequel to the first two Fallouts.
As I read the answer to this question my left eye tensed up unintentionally. I've never been happy with what they are doing to Fallout, but I now seem to have a blind hatred for everything related to Bethesda after reading this one... I don't even know how to insult this answer without going into a tirade of expletives like "Motherfucker" which they seem to be so fond of. I don't think I can keep taking this horse hockey they keep regurgitating. Learning more about this faux sequel doesn't seem to be worth my time anymore.

That was a fantastic preview. I wish all previews were more like this, just as I wish more games were like Fallout. Alas..

I'm not sure whether I'm envious or relieved that I didn't watch this demo. It sounds pretty bad from my perspective.

You should've seen the look on SuA's face after he saw it.

First thibng I said to him after seeing it was "Best. Game. Ever."

Kharn & Suicide,

I am overcome with respect for the both of you and NMA. I'm sure the feeling will pass but since it is a rare occurrence I thought I'd share.

+1

Donation incoming.

Thanks Killzig- donations make such projects possible.

with the current exchange rate, I fear I only purchased a case of good beer for you euros. :(

Kharn, question: since most of the demo was in FPP did you notice any kind of camera bob?

So they locked the thread already over Dethesdas?

Edit: Ok we got a new one. By the way Brother None, I have got an off topic question:

Do people in the Netherlands "get" these CARAVAN remarks?
