NMA Fallout 3 preview and Q&A

question

How did ron perlman sound and the whole introduction? sorry if you already discussed it
he sounded as ron perlman ;)

though i have a feeling the whole text was slower and i found it had less feeling in it (though that may be due to the text rather than ron himself).

it aint a bad intro at all, but i prefer the old ones (i'm guessing no one will be surprised reading that :P).

Great job guys! I have an answer tho.
How does Fallout looked like compared to other crpg's that you saw there,
I mean The Witcher and Drakensang? Was it better or worse?
what can you tell me about the Drakensang and The Witcher are they worth giving them a shot?

Holy sh*t. That was an awesome well detailed preview. I guess that's what happens when the preview is done by those who like the Fallout.

I think you missed the biggest question though. The justification of the opinion-based term 'immersion' as the main argument when talking about point of view and basic game mechanics, especially when there are other things which lots of people would call immersion breaking, like Vault-Tec, PipBoy, radiation and nuclear explosions.

wow :) i take a short break from the internetz and when i come back .. BAM !

nice work - this is how previews should be ... informed and refferenced ... not written by people who dont know anything about a franchise or cant bring themselves to be critical about something ... awesomely detailed and honest.. fair and balanced ! :P

great work guys. that tee shirt still looks awfull tho .. even on BN :PPP...

i'm saddened by the fact that muties are probably gonna be unapproachable

new question

Hoes does the armor look in the demo and in the brotherhood of steel?

From the screenshots it looks more like tinman from the wizard of oz or captain freedom from Running man than Fallout

i think that it goes without saying that bringing up 'immershun' as an argument for first person view as opposed to isometric 3D is pure bullshit.

it really aint bad at all. it's a nice T-shirt.

turn the 101 into 13, remove the 3 and the trademark on the front and get rid of the Bethesda thing on the left arm and it's a downright awesome tshirt ;)

that's mentioned in the preview.
looks more like plate mail over a bodysuit than it looks like a suit of powered armor. looks far too mismatched and badly finished to fit BoS standards on the west coast too.

sorry it was 1 clock in the morning when i read the preview..I will print it out and read it again :P

I must admit that this was one of the best reviews out there. Good job, you guys.

Why is this preview so different than hundreds of others? You guys didn't accidentally drink that strange coloured beer made by Lexx's cousin in Leipzig? :P

Just kidding, it was an outstanding job to go there in "Garret's" fashion and write the preview like this one (along with the Q&A). I'll keep it short, so...

Do you have a feeling that the game and its setting, in general, have been somewhat simplified? You know, pushing it into the mainstream line... I know it's just a demo (yep, hiding behind the unfinished presentation-piece-of-software is a nice PR maneuver, no doubt about that), but I'd like to hear your opinion anyway.

Biggest thanks for that painstaking preview.

Its cool to see that NMA can not only judge - but come and see by themselfs and only then - judge.

P.S. Isn't Pete a little fed up?

i tried some local beers but they really cant best the belgian beers...

germans are always quantity over quality anyway, when it comes to food & alcohol. (though the opposite seems to be true for non-alcoholic drinks... really 10cl glasses of fruitjuice at breakfast (had to go get a refill 3 times before i felt like i actually drank something)? 20cl bottle of random industrial appeljuice from Granini on the train for 2.9 euros? OH PLEASE...)

Gerrit's fashion actually.

that probably should be clear from the preview. Beth caters to everyone (and that will likely cause 'everyone' to think it's a semi-decent game, but not "teh best evar"). for the Fallout fan this means a dumbing down, for the FPS fan this means that his shots wont always hit even if his aim is correct (causing frustration, i bet), etc.

the whole move from isometric turnbased to first person (or over the shoulder 3rd person) realtime with pause is in my opinion a blatant move towards the mainstream (while Tim Cain said that that is exactly the opposite of what he wanted to do and achieve with Fallout (quote from 2004)).

i guess the slapstick humour versus the dark humour and the "big-badaboom" weapons/exploding cars are to wow the mainstream...

the list of course goes on.

what do you mean?

Somewhat offtopic.
I've grown to hate exploding things in games (and movies) - oh please its like evey barrel is full of explosives and every car is equipped with a car bomb.

If the cars were nucular - they would probably not explode, but they were using fuel cells (again low explosion probability). I really hate this .. it devaluates exlposions and their threat.

ON a similar note i saw yesterday the Bourne Ultimatum and i noticed and loved the fact that not one car blew up... They were crashed, rammed, driven off buildings but no kaboomz ! unlike other hollywood movies where the car just gets a bump and its badaboom :P

Isn't Pete a little fed up - means:

Guess, he knows all that stuff and looks of the game better than all the journalists do and defenitly he has his own eyes to see if something really silly or not as stunning as it sounds from his mouth.
So it means that - doing something that even he may not accept. At second time. And even without permittion to make replies like "I know, it was dumb" or "Actually, I didn't like that part myself".
Plus - all that repeating jokes.

Great preview, well written. But couldn't you guys have asked about map travel being included or not ? Seemed like a good opportunity for it and it's still one of the things i like to see them clear up (not that i am expecting much anymore at this stage).

@SuAside: Well.. don't drink "Oettinger" beer.. it's like horse pie and I think, horse pie is also somewhat better then Oettinger... or Sternburger beer... or both... :puke:

Again, are we sure it was "wasted" in the intro text as opposed to wasteland? I think not.

I don't really expect Bethsoft to link this preview on the official site, because it is from NMA, although it is probably the best out there. Do people think they might, although it isn't "professional" or as positive as many others? No mindless ranting please.

they did look damn nice, but they are indeed making it so bloody trivial...

well, it is his job. but yes, i suppose he's getting tired of it. always repeating the same jokes at the same timing etc. always feeding the press the same answers in the Q&A...

poor Pete. :(

We asked about map travel in the Community Q&A, so we might get the answer soon.

please, don't tell me it was pilsner urquel. It's a czech beer and actually tastes really great. Not as good as some austrian beer labels, but nearly as good :P
