Obsidian CEO wishes New Vegas "wasn't as glitchy"

Obsidian CEO wishes New Vegas "wasn't as glitchy"

Echoing a previously expressed sentiment and firmly standing in the "rather obvious" category, Feargus Urquhart, Obsidian's CEO, told Playstation Magazine that he wishes Fallout: New Vegas "wasn't as glitchy when it came out".

“Now in the case of Fallout: New Vegas, we made a gigantic game, and I’m proud with what we were able to do but I wish it wasn’t as glitchy when it came out. The criticisms people had are fair but it’s difficult to get a game the size of New Vegas bug free. But that’s an excuse and it doesn’t matter when someone’s paid $60 for a game. It’s something we need to work on.”

“From the standpoint of Dungeon Siege III, we’ve been working very hard to make sure it doesn’t happen again. We’ve been playing and playing and playing and playing to ensure it’s of a high standard. On top of this, this is the first time we’ve got to use our own technology on something, which means we know where to find the bad bugs from the start!”
As far as I remember, this isn't the first time Feargus says something along those lines, so I certainly hope that he can hold on his promises of Dungeon Siege III as a polished game.

Thanks PC Gamer.

Yeah ... it is quite sad that they got somewhat a reputation as buggy developer.

But. Better good games with bugs. Then like bad games with bugs. I mean hey. Fallout 3 was not really setting new standarts when it comes to stability.

Games of this caliber require far better tools for dialogue/quest/NPC outfit editing than they undoubtedly actually ended up using.

Someone slaps together something half-assed and then they waste a ton of man-hours trying to dig a hole in the ground with tweezers.

Since there have been so few attempts in the area of "deep RPG", the complete concepts for these tools were never properly finished.

And rightfully so, FNV may be a better game than F3 but it certainly isn't less buggy.

That is hardly an excuse in my eyes. Those people are damn professionals.

I'm not excusing them. I pointed out the problems that need addressing in the industry. And also passive-aggressively foreshadowed that my game, when it comes out in 2402, will not be this glitchy because I spent time on superior dev. tools.

it actually set the fastest record for having a patch under the circumstances of the patch.

microsoft complained very loudly and quite persistently on day 0 of fallout 3 being released because they got something on the order of 3 million of their "crash reports" on the first day.

from what i heard by people inside MS, by the end of the first week they had over 500 million of those crash logs, and they all pointed to the same crash which was a record for them.

I'm giving Obsidian the benefit of the doubt with Dungeon Siege III. If it turns out to be just as buggy as their previous games despite it being their own engine then I'll never buy an Obsidian game first day ever again, I'll give it a few months 'til it's patched.

I know DS3 won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I had a lot of fun playing the Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance & X-Men Legends game on the original Xbox, but haven't found a good aRPG on the 360 yet, so I'm looking forward to it.

I never really had a problem with bugs. Feargus is right, a game of this size is impossible to ship without bugs. What's the big deal? Just patch it and keep having fun.

I prefer an ambitious and original game full of bugs over a polished mediocre game. But well yeah, a better betatesting or QA would be nice too.

There are no patches on a console. :smug:

Well, even proffessionals are just human. At some point especially with a project like this there are too many things that can go wrong to monitor.

damn. i played Portal 2 last weekend.
much better graphics, effects and running smooth.
why FNV can't be this way? oh humanity...

Well, totally different engine. You can't do FNV in the way it is done when using the source engine.

Well comparing a linear corridor puzzle platformer to an open world RPG isn't exactly the best comparison to make either.

So? Professionals do bad shit all the time, in any line of work.

It's an outright dumb comparison, actually.
