Trey Parker and Matt Stone have never been shy about their love of gaming. From Randy Marsh playing Guitar Hero in his underpants to the legendary "Make Love, Not Warcraft" episode, the comic duo have demonstrated an obvious familiarity with the medium. Now that they've conquered television, film, and Broadway, the next target on their hit list is the gaming industry.

Thanks to a collaboration with THQ and Obsidian, Parker and Stone are writing the script, performing the dialogue, and overseeing the development of South Park: The Game. Unlike the cash-in Acclaim titles from over a decade ago, this ambitious project is a full-scale RPG for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. As the new kid in South Park, it'll be up to you to make friends and defend the town from a wide range of threats. Be sure to check out our January issue for all the details, as well as an interview with Parker and Stone themselves.

haha, well that's... unexpected. I wish Obsidian would pour their time into something a bit more interesting, I gotta say.

They apparently edited " and PC." in the article now, it wasn't there when I created the thread.

Still not remotively interested in such a setting.

This sure sounds neat. I am just wondering how the Graphic style of the game will be. Cel shaded?!

What a strange idea, surprising to say the least.

Can't pass judgement on this until more info is out though, obviously. I mean, obviously Obsidian could have put that manpower into some other project... but yeah................. wat.

Never saw South Park, But from what I hear it isn't exactly a deep lore filled universe, I wonder how bad this will turn out

Supernatural should have an RPG. It's a perfect setting.

What's wrong with you people?

South Park is awesome, and the actual creators of the show are in charge.

Obsidian is awesome.

This game might actually be pretty interesting.

Granted, I do hope Obsidian has some other project up there sleeve beyond this endeaver.

Never played Rally or Shack but I kinda liked the FPS from long ago. Multiplayer wasn't the worst multiplayer I've played but the actual game story mode was a solid 6/10 for the time, plenty of original jokes as opposed to recycled material from the show too. I'm a pretty big fan of the show and while I think obsidian could chose much better places to put effort this will probably be an amazing game and really good for the company to boot.

I simply do not see this franchise/setting to be feasible to be an RPG at all. It has no real "lore", no content, it's a platform to project parodies on. Is there anything behind the "herp, we make fun of what's going on in the world"? I do not say it's bad, I watch that show ocassionally aswell. But as said, I don't see how this is interesting to be an RPG. Even if you want to go the parody route, the pacing and dynamic is completeley different, new Southpark episodes get churned out pretty quick to stay at the pulse of time, what's happening right now etc. - while developing a game (let alone an RPG) takes much longer.

Though, on a business side it was a smart decision, many people like Southpark and probably end up buying it. I will remain very underwhelmed until I see actual gameplay which is beyond "lol funny xD" - or simply wait for the real deal, the other unnanounced RPG with Sawyer at the helm. Don't disappoint us here, bro. :(

My guess is that this will end up like "The Simpsons Game", a funny plot and story but terribly boring gameplay.

Agreed.

There's quite a bit of difference between EA and Obsidian.

Who's publishing the game could have a pretty big impact on the whole thing. I'll start holding my breath

But THQ will be the publisher...

Also, the plot and the elements are already written - this is even more funny since having good writing is one of the few things Obsidian has a reputation for in the industry - what they will do when the main stuff is already carved in stone? Puzzling together some RPG elements and that's it. It really sounds like nothing but a quick buck to score by doing minor contract work, the "Slamdunk" strategy they so often used.

Yes. Yes. And a thousand times Yes.
You mean people besides girls drooling over the actors actually enjoy that show?

I haven't actually seen much of it, so I'm genuinely asking. Is Supernatural actually a good show?

I was about to say it is a good show but now I'm not to sure if I like it for the right reasons

What elements? You know something we don't?

Considering this is most likely going to be a parody the main meat will be in sidequest and sidestuff in general. (Which Obsidian will use plenty) And apart from that theres also a lot "more" in a game, especially in an RPG, than the main plot.

Apart from that the SP guys are "just" overseeing the project. Obsidian still has full creative freedom regarding design.

Everything after the first season and before the introduction of angels (fifth season I think?) is pretty badass. The first season was somewhat decent.

But yeah, it'd make a pretty fucking awesome game.

Edit: The show itself has mocked the fangirls who drool over the main characters on several occasions.

This is so wrong. Season 3 was terrible and rushed (especially Thief chick) and Castiel was an excellent addition.
