Persona 5

It is upon reading this thread I realize how much of a Persona noob I am.

Fear not our brethren, for it happened to all three of us.

I remember my first playthrough of persona 4 golden and I messed up royally. Got the worst ending, have not found half of confidants and just sucked in general.

Now it is much better but I do not think I will go back to this game anytime soon. Persona 5 is simply that good.

For me, it was vanilla Persona 3. I was clueless, didn't know how to build Personas, kept picking wrong options in Social Links and got the bad ending. Plus I never went back to it once I got my hands on Persona 3 FES.

My first run is always a shitshow because I never plan anything ahead (how could I really? you never know when shit openins the first time around). My first Persona 4 Vanilla run I actually timed out on rescuing Yukiko (mostly because I wanted to see what happened if I did) and only about 5 S.Links maxed out, I barely managed to Max out Nanko before That part of the game. Other than that I never get the bad endings, they are usually very telegraphed in my opinion and I also play the mainline SMT games so the language of the magicis like second nature to me and sometimes I even guess the weaknesses and resistances of demons correctly which scares me a bit seeing how they usually make no sense.

Well, finished second playthrough with Futaba Sakura and I have to admit, she is just so adorable and I burst out laughing at her attempts in romance.

A pity that I will not be able to give it a go third time anytime soon. The summer is starting and I will be busy through most of it.

Outside of that, I was able to compare differences in script and voice quality. When Futaba cried in English it felt really fake to say the least.

Japanese audio is simply much more fitting and I recommend it myself. However the script is weird, the subtitles do not often match the audio. Not to mention, if you know Japanese just a little you can hear the difference.

I do recall reading about complaints of the translators making mistakes in their translations of the games. Some of them are somewhat substantial mistakes (like Ryuji mentioning his folks when the story states he lives with his single mom since his dad left them) while some are negligible.

I have read about it too, supposedly they had like 8 translators working on a script. They probably rushed the translation and we can see the results. This line of thinking is similar to saying in my country: "The manager thinks if a one woman can deliver a baby in 9 months, then 9 woman can deliver a baby in a month.". Or something along those lines.

Basically, they really should have used at most four translators, one or two being best. I mean every writter has it's own gimmick and it will show up one way or another. Makes sense the script feels lackluster.

My second run is going pretty slowly what with only being able to play on weekends. I remember when I played Persona 4 and I could just play it until 4 am everyday because classes didn't start until 4pm the next day.... ah youth...

Just started it, im 6 hours in still with he first dungeon. This is my first in the series.

It has a slow start that's more story intensive/restrictive. But the presentation (those animated cut scenes are really cool, feels like a show in some ways) and the plot in general makes the slow start engaging despite how restrictive it is. Once it starts opening up is where the fun begins.

Overall one of the more unique experiences this year and a game that will be on my GOTY list.

For any of you that have beat it some tips to keep in mind would be appreciated.

When you get the deadlines make sure you complete them as quickly as possible, don't waste SP, don't get attached to your Personas always fuse them if you can get something good, keep Weaknesses in mind thay can kill you or save you, and finally once you access Mementos always make sure to explore it to the deepest floor you can.

For any of you that have beat it some tips to keep in mind would be appreciated.
Also, take note of Social Link perks. Prioritize the most useful ones to your party and yourself since time is limited (and you'll need to spend time levelling up social stats as well to max out some, if not most of them).

Well, Personas are the most important. Don't get attached, the best stuff comes in the late game or in the second playthrough. Some of the best confidants (not teammates): Chihaya Mifune (Boosts your relationship for money), Tae Takemi (All those medicines + Homunculus (Allow you to survive instakill attacks)), Twins (Lockdown + Fusing higher level personas than you are).

My advice is to build a persona with those 3 skills:

-Pulinpa (Confuse spell)
-Confuse Boost
-Nullify Physical.

Against most minibosses in mementos it is more than enough, especially weak ones. You can also gain crazy amout of money. You will most likely not get all the confidants in the first playthrough, so take it easy. Having max stats in new game+ is quite easy with all the personas and such.

Last but not least, always have some SP items or get SP adhesive 3, which will let you stay forever in palaces. They are quite expensive though, 100k each.

Also, make sure to complete dungeons ASAP once you reach the final floor. Delaying may halt some Social Link progress and that will be annoying.

Also when you get the event to call the maid do it immediately, it givesd you access to the Temperance confidant, focus on maxing it out as soon as possible it gives you the absolute best out of battle effects.

Thanks everyone, I have finished the first palace 10 or so hours in. Im trying to boost charm and kindness for the Ann romance so I got the plant, a book and I need to increase charm enough for the plant shop for kindness. Also occasionally working with the old man in cafe leblanc.

One of the best ways to level up Charm that I found is the herbal baths at the bathhouse near Leblanc on Mondays and Thursdays IIRC. I made it a point to visit that place whenever I could which allowed me to max it out near the halfway point of the game. Also acing exams in the game levels up Charm as well (so be sure to keep Knowledge decently leveled).

So I'm beginning the second palace with the art teacher.

Finally got the necessary kindness to interact with ann (which is a really dumb barrier honestly, shes my friend is she not?) but by the time I got it I missed the chance to hangout with her and im stuck in the early phases before it lets me go free form. So whenever I can im gonna try to improve the confidant relationship. (which is still at 1 annoyingly)

That said my opinion so far is that the story is really good and its written well. I also really admire the little anime segments for key story sections. Characters are lively and likeable. Combat and the dungeon exploration is also a ton of fun. Also giving the player freedom in the free form sections is great for doing activities and planning things out.

What bothers the hell out of me though is how restrictive the game can get at times. The game will force you through story segments without any opportunity to go off and do something. "Arent you tired?" fuck off I want to do something game. I wish they gave the player the option instead of throwing everything at once to let them do a few things in between the rising action. My only other issue is the saving, which in turn is due to the game being restrictive and forcing you down a path before you want. I wish we could save more often and more freely. I can understand wanting to prevent cheesing fights and dungeons but some compromise must be made.

Welcome to the club. Where we have to go to sleep because Morgana won't let us leave.

On the other hand, the free saving outside dungeons has made it easy to save-scum Confidants (especially if you are looking for the optimal dialogue choice).

If anything this Persona game is actually too forgiving with the saving, you get several safe rooms in dungeons and can quickly travel through each. In previous persona games you had a Save point on the entrance of the dungeon and you had to leave to use it.
