RAGE: The Thread

Wow some of the textures are Fallout 3 quality. Having said that, the animations are amazing, especially how the enemies react to being shot.

Gosh! That's ridicilous. They probably thought that people would ignore such stuff. I might forget about this game whole sale and put my dough aside for Dark Souls.

Intial Thoughts on the game:

[spoiler:012e49ff19]My friend, this is like if that [Fallout 3] shit met that [Fallout New Vegas] i had, and they had a baby... And then meanwhile, that crazy [Borderlands] stuff i had and the Super [Time Splitters] met and had a baby... And by some miracle, those two babies met and fucked; this would be the shit they birthed.

So this is the product of baby fucking.[/spoiler:012e49ff19]

With all the bugs flying around, I wonder what has happened to id's 'when it's done' policy? :smug:

EDIT: Game Publishers rarely release Demo this day and it is bad for the players since we would not know how the game play is like until we pay it with our hard-earned cash, then we bitch about it (mostly) how shitty the game is (mostly).

Which is the reason why I bought Hard Reset is because of the demo (Take note Wooz :) ).

I am a fan of arcade-fps game and id's game. But given the bitching and moaning flying around, I think I have to borrow a copy of Rage to try it before I pay for a copy. :ugly:

Idiots will buy, defend and hype this crap no matter how bad or broken it is. (it is made by id after all, they released a great game in 1993 !!!! AND they are part of the "history of gaming" (lol) )

Agree. Maybe I'm in a lonely boat here, but after Doom and Doom II, well... I don't think I've really played a decent Id game. Quake was alright, Quake 2, meh. And Quake 3? Made obsolete by the much superior Unreal Tournament. Doom III was a cash-in and Quake 4 did what Doom III should of been, albeit still not good.

Rage looks like a joke. I still love watching the previews when Tom Willits describes the game as a break from the typical modern FPS right at the same time gunplay is shown with the main character shooting down the sights of his gun and then suddenly has to take cover. I'm assuming this game has regeneration health, as well?

They totally screwed the pooch releasing the PC version with such low resolution textures. I bet if I ripped the game apart few texture images are larger than 256x256. That's Quake 2 era we're talking about.

Aside from that the game runs perfectly for me. Controls are very good, no problems with shooting or any "consolitis" feel. Granted I added what equates to a small novel to the command line parameters forcing the game to take advantage of all things a PC can offer (improved texture caching, larger FOV, etc.).
Framerate is smooth and consistent. There hasn't been a single crash or hiccup. Loading times are almost instantaneous. Texture pop-in is barely noticeable and only seems to appear in certain areas for less than a second at the edges of the screen. I guess I got lucky.

since when are good games about nice graphics?

that texture pop up on the ps3 video link doesn`t seem very disturbing.

Aw c'mon. id may have not released any good games lately, but they are undoubtedly part of gaming history. Their contribution to e-sports is massive.
The early age pretty much consisted only of Doom (II) and Quake.
And even today, Quake 4 is one of the three FPS games played professionally, and Quake Live is also played a lot.
Hell, people even still play Quake 2 from time to time. The Edge is one of the greatest DM maps of all time (of all time!).
And not to forget that id are one of the few devs who actively support Linux, which is massively awesome.
But yeah, while Doom³ was a graphical milestone, it just wasn't that good. And Quake 4's singleplayer lacked, too.
It's a shame what id has become.
Btw., Carmack said there is the possibility of a HD texture pack for the PC.

Looks pretty good on his system.

Yeah that's true, I was a bit pissed off yesterday so my previous comment was fuelled by RAGE, id was a great company in the 90's.

It's a shame they haven't released anything great (in terms of gameplay) since Q3 IMO.

Please do. I don't believe it. Looks like a streaming issue to me, nobody would release an AAA game with 256x256 texes these days.

I remember seeing an article last may about the graphics beeing the same across all systems. I love this game, but what were they thinking?

I remember textures in Singularity taking up to 30 seconds to load in their proper resolution... That wall corner looks utterly horrible.

And that's one of the better looking examples. Almost everything with writing on it is totally illegible. What's pathetic is you *can* make good looking low resolution textures. All they did here was take high res images and downscale them to the point where they lose all detail and turn into blurry pixelated messes.

I just tried out that rageconfig.cfg fix and it totally eliminated what little texture pop-in I had.

They're not as a rule, but some games absolutely use their graphics as a selling point (Rage, Crysis) and it is asinine to argue that graphics are not a factor in the enjoyment of a game. How big a factor depends on the title, and in the case of iD titles it should be a major plus, not a detriment.

The fact that he has any popping on his system, which is about as ideal as you can get, is kind of ridiculous.

Are you the one who keeps posting Total Biscuit here btw, or is that multiple people? In any case, thanks, he's quite enjoyable.
