Scariest game

I agree with the Cradle mission in Thief 3. Certain scenes, plus these wandering ghosts of past "inhabitants", really scared the shiznit out of me. I also found the whole concept of these Keeper Rune Sentries (or sth like that) rather scary.

Thief 1 and 2 had the zombies and the Hammerite skeletons. Especially the "dragging chains" sounds the Hammerite skeletons make as they get nearer and nearer made you wanna run as far away as possible.

I first experienced true horror in a PC game while playing the first Gabriel Knight game. Voodoo murders and the whole concept of Voodoo, plus that ethnic drumming soundtrack really brought forth some good scares.

When resident evil first came out my friend Pat and I stayed up all night shaking in our jammys. I think that's probably number one for me, but I'm glad someone said System Shock 2, because that game was terrifiying. The sound design was so goddamn good; Shodan's voice just made me want to break down and cry - but at the same time it was strangely erotic/seductive.

i totally agree, its scary when it first came out. But i ruined the game by using cheats
I still remember the hand sticking out the boarded window though.

Resident evil 1. I remember once playing it with my friend in a dark room. We had already killed the zombie in the corridor, so we were running. Well suprise suprise. The hunters had appeared into the other parts of the mansion so we ran straight into a hunter and camera angle changed like inte last possible second. YAIKS!

Aliens vs. predator. Christ those sounds and the overall feel when you know there is something out there...

NEW RELATIONSHIP ADVICE ADVICE

While the Ocean House place in VTM:B was kinda freaky, I don't think that it was actually "scary" on the level that SS2 is. I can't even play past a certain part in SS2.

I know. I'm a little bitch.

Grout's house, however, wasn't freaky but was definately the coolest area in the game. Those voice recordings are awesome. I've got a folder on my iRiver just to hear them.

Anyway, SS2 = scariest game evar.

Moonstone, the swamp thing was scarry. The music effect was dreadful.

It was probably the first game I really enjoyed, I was about 10 years old when we got it and I liked the blood in it.

I just remebered the first "Alien VS. Predator". I remember slowing advancing down a hall with no movement on the motion tracker. After I opened a door to a room I noticed a face-hugger running around a table. In fear of having killed a few before, but not ever being attacked by one (Which made me wonder what happens...) I ran in the room grabbed some ammo from a corpse and got a keycard then ran out. To my knowledge the face-hugger was still under that table. As I walked away the door behind me re-opened and I turned and looked...nothing there. I heard the strange tapping sound of something moving towards me. I was so shocked that instead of running I dropped a flare on the ground in front of me. Just in time the flare lit up the face-hugger as it leapt up onto my character and the things body took up the whole screen to simulate the oral rape and a terrible screeching sound was heard. At exactly that moment I (The player.) jumped backwards causing my chair to fall over...I didnt even brace myself since I was clawing at my facial area to...get it off.

Thats one of my best memories ever.

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

Is Moonstone that game where you were some knight guy and you just had to fight 200 different kinds of monsters and repeatedly got your ass kicked by that fucking dragon? That's a blast from the past, I played the crap out of that when I was younger.

I must play again. Sir Volkov will rise once more.

And it sounds like I must check out this "Condemned" game. Sounds sweet.

I just remembered something I ran across a while ago.

Journey Into The Cradle, an article by Kieron Gillen for PC Gamer. Gillen goes overboard in his praise, and his writing leaves something to be desired. The fanfic segment makes me cringe (God only knows why they actually printed that, but it is PC Gamer after all). However, segments of the article are interesting enough to warrent a read (at least in my mind).

Wow Kotario...I'm thinking about buying that game just from what I read there. Oh and what some of the other people are saying here.

I'm also surprised to see a game article so long.

 ,

Yes, well there were 12-15 bifferent kinds of monsters, and you had to know how to kill the monsters, to kill the dragon you have to stap it repeatedly to the throat. Ahh what a game it was. I just hoped I could find a DOS emulator that could run most late 80 and early 90 games, with my current one 2gighz computer, well you can have them all. Or can I :?:

Isn't Moonstone Amiga-only game? It's one of my alltime favourites.

Really fun game if you have four players and enough beer. :)

Singling out Shalesbridge Cradle from Thief 3 does an injustice to the rest of the Thief series I think.

While the outright scares are thin on the ground the general stress that this series exerts is way past any other game I've played except SS2.

Even the more mundane missions like First City Bank from Thief 2: The Metal Age left me exhausted after more than two hours of creeping around.

The Hammerite Cathedral catacombs were so scary that I never took more than three or four steps into them, instead opting the comparatively more dangerous (though less scary) option of climbing the watch tower to make my entrance.

SS2 was just fucked. I had to take breaks every fifteen minutes because it was shredding my nerves. To this day I've only completed it on cooperative multiplayer.
Running around with three mates to back you up does wonders for your confidence.

System Shock 2 is fucking scary. The 'Midwives' are one of the most scary enemies I have every encountered in any game. Why? Simple.

Just imagine walking down a dark corridor and hearing a voice, like a broken transistor radio calling out to you... 'I'm going to riippp out youurrr spppiineee...' and then going silent. :D

The cyborg assassins were scarier. Particularly the part of the game you had to walk through a lounge with all the lights off. Tres "Do androids dream of electric sheep" - style.
