Not only is it a cliché, it's not true either. Although it never ceases to amuse me how the religion industry seeks to claim the 'souls' of these great thinkers.

So in all the history you believe there was NEVER EVER even a single scientist or researcher and explorer who believed in a deitiy and was working in a scientific field?

Jebus. Dont confuse religion with catholic church please.
 
Meh, they always drag up the same people - either pre-aufklärung thinkers who lived in a time where admitting to anything deviating from the norm would've gotten you killed, or Einstein. Even though he clearly wrote that he considered religion childish. And because of an endearing incapacity of realising what he meant when he said - to paraphrase - that he considers the beauty of existence a religious experience.

It's not that no great thinkers in history were religious - of course there must've been a bunch - it's mainly that all the examples they drag in by the hair are fairly stupid.

But meh, let's not turn this into another religious debate. Prometheus has caused enough damage already.
 
it has nothing to do with a religious debate. Its about spirituality. Again. Science and faith are not mutually exclusive. It goes much further then feeling your self as a part of a religion. Hence why there are so many agnostics out there.
 
Meh. Spritituality and religion are pretty much the same: it's the same kind of thinking.
Agnosticism can also easily be divided into spiritual non-conformists and intellectually honest sceptics, so you can't put them all in the same bag.

the point is that it was lame schtick that they lazily phoned in.
there could be a list of a million bishop scientists and it would be irrelevant.

Just finished reading that “Alien: Engineers” script you linked. I don’t know if it would have been a better movie, but judging from the plot, it would have certainly been a less stupid movie (i.e. a movie less likely to insult its audience’s intelligence at every other turn). It’s not perfect and there were still “whaaaa…?” moments in this story, but overal it is less convoluted and there are less plotholes because of it. It is also much more of an Alien story, but perhaps too much so to warrant another movie. Man visits LV-427, stumbles upon the alien eggs, due to an evil robot aliens spawn and murder everybody, woman kills the big alien and saves the planet. Pretty predictable, but it could have been entertaining none the less.

You can still see how they took this script as the basis for Prometheus; while reading I was actually using scenes of the movie to puzzle together the (mental) imagery to go with this script. I don’t really agree with the changes they did made to this text in order to make Prometheus; none of them really added anything substantial to the overal quality of the movie/story.

That being said, would a movie based on this “Alien: Engineers” script have satisfied the fans? Probably not. It doesn’t really answer the questions that are left open in Prometheus either: the biggest one for me being “why do the engineers want to kill us?” Is it just because we’re bad humans and they want to start over?

A lot of die-hard fans would probably have tripped over the inconsistencies between this script and the first Alien (where the characters find what happened in this script) and that would no doubt have sparked a heated (internet)debate that would have to feel ashamed next to the one being waged over Prometheus.

well there is the idea that the engineers visited the earth once and the humans have not really been nice to them.

Just what I have read somewhere. Could be also that they simply said "alright, that was a nice try kid! But now we should stop the school experiment"
 
Seeing this thread after several months reminded me once more of how unnecessary the movie was. It's just bad, ok. Terminator Salvation bad. Or Predators bad. Not quite Doom the movie bad, but definitely Chronicles of Riddick bad. A friend of mine is trying to salvage something from the mess with his own Prometheus mod for Doom 3. He's a pretty talented guy, a former dev at Rockstar, and some other stuff. I don't know where he's going with it, and trying to understand the thoughts of an abstract thinker is the ultimate exercise in frustration.

I liked Predators personally. Plus, Prometheus wasn't nearly as bad as Terminator Salvation. I guess they both sucked in their own special ways.
