Should Fallout 3 be considered canon?

There was only one desert ranger inxthe series ( tycho) and it was a nod to wasteland, Fargo previous post-apo for series. I don't think they were ever intended to become prominent, especially if interplay couldn't acquire the IP.

It is not the same as contradicting main plots or main subplots, like the super-mutants suddenly not needing pure humans to make smart ones, the jet becoming a pre-war drug, the vaults becoming butchery, instead of SOCIAL experiments, or the BOS suddenly worshipping technology instead of protecting people from it, or having the aliens start the war instead of both the usa and china eescalating and so on... those things aren't side events but have big impacts in some installments or the series overall.

Because a lot of them have probably never been there. see that map, New Reno is pretty much where Reno is in real life. Las Vegas is at the bottom. New Vegas is exactly where real life Vegas. Walking on a beeline path straight to Reno from Vegas would take about 134 hours on estimate and it is still 412.5 miles. The fact that there even are people from Reno in New Vegas is a miracle.

People realize I knew, always did, they were absorbed into NCR.

It's their complete lack of presence in the Nevada region or historical footnote which bothers me.

Where are their former homes? The people who remember them? Their families. What do people think of their former allies jumping ship to NCR?

Instead, we get a massive statue.

They were a small paramilitary force protecting the people ten years ago. They're not gone, they got relabelled.
What do you want, renegade units of Desert Rangers fighting a Guerilla war against the NCR because they don't make it clear enough that the Veteran Rangers are the successors of the Desert Rangers, despite wearing the same armor? Some random Veteran Ranger commander going "Yeah BUT TEN YEARS AGO WE WERE THE DESERT RANGERS, DO NOT FORGET THAT"?

Wait, don't say it. It's exactly the level of ham and camp you love because it gives you more shooty stuff to get shooty with.
 
You should redirect your complain toward the jackals and vipers. They are mentioned in the very first game, they come from the same vault as the khans and the ncr. The vipers killed the second maxson elder, which contributed to the BOS isolationism. First time both factions appear is in new vegas, and they get the bethesda treatment. They appear centuries later, thousands of kilometers away, have no leader, no one with speaking lines, no explanations about why they are here, no involvement of any kind, and their lore isn't even used. They are just there, like the super-mutants, the talon company, the raiders, the Chinese ghouls and many other fallout 3 groups.

I confess, I was genuinely confused by the sudden appearance of those guys when everyone else and their brother got origins.

And in Talon Company's and the Super Mutant's defense, we see their headquarters and we get their general place in the world.

For wandering monsters, they have a role which fits their story.

Fallout 3 is one of the best games of all time and everything which made New Vegas better than Fallout 3 is building off the awesome that it was. It doesn't need defending by making other things worse.

Besides, Fallout: New Vegas is my favorite of the series.

Not that any of this matters as the issue is the fact NV retcons a bunch of stuff to tell a better story and should be applauded for it.

Yeah no, Fallout New Vegas is what happens when you make the best of a bad situation. The game would have been a hell of a lot better had it NOT been based on Fallout 3. Most folks around here tolerate New Vegas's gameplay because of the writing and actual role playing opportunities. The shooting is still fucking atrocious and the engine is still fundamentally broken. Everything that is wrong with New Vegas can be directly attributed to being forced to use Fallout 3 as a template.

Holy shit, @CT Phipps people here are extremely tolerant to the likes of you, eh? How many times do you want to insist the Desert Rangers being 'handwaved', 'badly written', yadda yadda, despite people had repeatedly answered they were absorbed by the NCR?

Oh, right, you want fanservice. You want former Desert Rangers to tell you, "WE WERE THE DESERT RANGERS!" in a very in-your-face way, because despite of all that they tell you in the game, you want them to tell you in person and serve it on a silver platter.

No wonder you love Skyrim, and also Fallout 3 for how fanservice-tainted it was. Jeez, it's extremely baffling how you would go to such an extreme length to read WAY too much into puddle-deep games like Skyrim and Fallout 3, but can't understand or draw conclusion based on simple facts shown in New Vegas, or even outright misinterpret it.
 
FoNV build a lot on Fo1-Fo2, moving forward while every game after Fo2 removed things, features, depth, C&C etc... It was crippled by an awfull engine and gameplay that was forced by Beth. Without it, the game would have been so much better.

Sadly it's only on Spanish for now, maybe the subs get a CC location later

- Fanservice, as the name implies, is pandering to the audience. While the impression of "Hey, it's all your favourite characters! You like it right!??" is nice and all, it's an empty satisfaction. Watching that scene or moment again does NOT convey the same feeling and if you think you are loving it you are probavly lying to yourself. Overuse or use at all of it CAN ruin a work.
That's why Evangelion's spin-off feels so weird, it's just not the same.
That's why The Simpsons went noticeably downhill after the "Tik-Tok" couch gag.

- When it comes to "just looks" fanservice, most commnly found in anime, well, it's just a trap to get people in the show when it's not managed well.

- The consumer not always knows what they want. it doesn't let looking forward and moving on, it's just returning to the same thing becouse fans want to. But they actually don't. Star Wars and the wave of reboots of today have this issue. Also this is embodied by Dark Souls III.

- In the other hand, it can add a lot of flavor in well counted situations. Kill la Kill and Tengen Toppa had nudity and clothing as a theme lol. Legend Of Korra won a lot for fans as it was a far sequel to Legend of Aang. Some of the modern western comics like All-Stars superman embodied what it meant for fans and did a pretty unique work. SOmetimes it's also best to BREAK it. In TFA, Kylo Ren looks like is intended to be a new Darth Vader, takes off his mask and is a faggy crybaby. In MGS when they replaced raiden for Snake (dunno what MGS fans thought tho)

I just noticed this. Care to elaborate which part NV retcons from previous games? Because this 'bunch of stuff' would mostly Obsidian having to put up and make due with what Beth have done.
