So what lore has Bethesda done gone fucked up?

Because all of those people are going to rush to Bethesda for the best shooting/crafting/romancing experience? I don't think Bethesda's competent enough to make the new COD/Minecraft/Hatoful Boyfriend.
Like I said before, it's about the combination of ideas. COD ain't got no crafting element. Minecraft ain't got no shooty tooty bang bang. Hatoful Boyfriend ain't got no settlement building.

When you put it like that it does sound like they'll build quite an empire, good for the random Bethesda employees I guess, too bad for Fallout and Elder Scrolls though :-(

I've just realized the irony of the "it's skyrim with guns" meme. Some exec probably heard it and the idea of fallout 4 was born.

So if we start a bandwagon called Fallout With Tentacle Monsters we might get a hentai-esque TESVI? Uh... I wouldn't mind that.

Like I said before, it's about the combination of ideas.

Shadow of Mordor was a combination of ideas, and so was Metal Gear Solid V. Yet both games turned out great. I think the argument that not sticking to one genre or one main feature is bad is a fairly weak argument - it can be done, if you do it well. Fallout 4 probably would've been even worse without the tacked-on gimmicks, because apart from them, it has nothing to stand on.

True, without the gimmicks it would have been really empty and devoid of value.

Well, if I wanted a walking simulator with survival and crafting, I'm not playing Fallout 4.
I'm playing The Long Dark. Or Don't Starve. Both are excellent games.

But what are you going to do when you want a walking simulator with a shitty romancing angle? :smug:

I'm pretty sure that either a small-scale indie dev team will make one sooner or later if it hasn't been made in Japan already. Also, if you avoid most fights, that's basically Dragon Age: Inquisition, really.

No, scratch that, look hard enough and you'll probably find ten of them that already exists in Japan.

"Ghouls are meant to be walking rotting corpses so 28 Days Later-rip offs and burn victims go against that."

Wait, that part doesn't quite make sense. We see sentient Ghouls in Fallout 1 just as much as we see the shuffling zombie ones. Necropolis is filled with both types. Not all ghouls are zombies, even in the original games. Unless you just mean the sentient ghouls in F3 and 4 should look a lot uglier than they do.

The Long Dark is good? At first sight it looked like another "simple" survival sim, but it really makes you work with your temperature and structure scavenging right? Idk ill try the new story/campaign mode.

Even the sentient one's are still rotting corpses yo.

It uses typical permadeath arrangements in that your save is deleted on death. (Although you can still do some mild save-scumming with Alt-F4).
Yes, there are a lot of survival sims out there, but the two I named are pretty polished. The Long Dark is Early Access, so be forewarned. They have, however, been pretty regular about updates and adding content even though single player isn't out yet.

The Long Dark isn't Minecrafty though. And it expects you to really be on board with just long stretches of silence and walking. I'm not kidding when I say it's a walking sim. Some people might find it immersive, others just find that annoying. But managing food, water, temperature and exploring is like crack to me.

I pretty much am that guy that can't play NV without turning on hardcore, even though at that point I never really find problems managing those food/water/sleep meters.

Yeah, I can only play New Vegas in Hardcore mode now. Probably the best part about it is the limb management. I know most people probably hate that part but I appreciate it. That feeling when you just fought a Deathclaw, have 2 broken legs and a limp arm, only to realize you're out of Doctor's Bags and now you have to stump your way towards civilization with practically useless legs because stimpaks don't work on broken bones. Good times. I don't use fast travel if I have a broken limb, that's just a rule of mine.

Do you know any way to make Hardcore mode tougher though? I would increase the difficulty of the game from Normal to Hard but I'm afraid that'd just turn everything into a bullet sponge since it's still Bethesda's engine. I like having to manage food and water (especially since my character's addicted to Whiskey. Pretty much one drink of whiskey = needing to slurp some water so I'm constantly having to scavenge for water supplies or natural water sources) but hunger and sleep honestly never seem to go up for me. Water? All the time, but I don't believe I've ever seen my character actually hungry or sleepy except maybe 4 or 5 times. I want those bars to go up as quickly as the water bar does.

Like I said before, it's about the combination of ideas. COD ain't got no crafting element. Minecraft ain't got no shooty tooty bang bang. Hatoful Boyfriend ain't got no settlement building.

And yet, everything Beth tried to rip off, they did poorly. I absolutely can't stand Call of Duty but I will say the shooting in that game is fairly satisfying and fast paced. Minecraft has creative mode to help build things a lot faster, and crafting usually doesn't require walking too far from your base. Even the most rare materials can usually be found digging straight down near your settlement as long as you avoid lava. In Fallout 4 it usually monotonously requires digging through a lot of filing cabinets, old chests, and so forth to actually find anything worth a damn, for hours on end.

And Hatoful Boyfriend, as silly as that game is, actually has very emotional connections to the characters. I felt really attached to each one as I romanced, almost forgetting this was a friggin bird dating sim at times. Each bird does have a lot of depth to them, especially if you romance them all and see the other birds' characters come out in different romances. It can be a little cliched at times sure, but the game makes for an emotional roller coaster of laughter and sadness. It's a silly romance game but it does both comedy and tearjerking moments very well in my opinion. I could go back and play it anytime and still get a good laugh or sad sigh from those quirky pigeons. In Fallout 4 meanwhile, it feels that way at first. You start to get to know the followers' backgrounds by doing tasks they like, slowly learning about their past, and I thought that was kinda interesting. Only to have it abruptly end once you romance them and never have them say an interesting thing ever again. Hell, outside of cliched lovey-dovey dialogue the only follower who actually changes slightly once you romance them is Cait, since she starts hating you taking drugs because she doesn't want to see you become an addict. Other than that? Nothing. No new character development, no more attachment, they just become saddlebags with the addition of fucking them.

Perhaps the combination of ideas is more important for Bethesda's fanbase than the quality of implementation of each idea? Imagine what'd happen if someone were to copy what Bethesda did only do it way better. Better shooting elements, better RPG elements, better overworld for exploration, better crafting systems, better dialogue, deeper character relationships etc. How many Bethesda fans do you think would jump ship? Hell, FNV put a dent in Bethesda. Some of their fans wizened up after they saw better quality and are now asking for more. They've seen that they don't have to settle for the shit Bethesda shovels them and want more. But FNV still suffered from a lot of problems being held back by Bethesda and their engine. Imagine someone else with a different engine pulling an even better FNV-esque game?

I honestly think that's the only reason a lot of Bethesda fans are even sticking around with Bethesda. They ain't got anyone else to move on to. Sure, if they want straight up shooting then they could go to COD or whatever. If they want a romance sim then there are tons of them out there. But if they want the kind of gameplay Bethesda offers then what options do they have? I believe that if they were given a proper option that is just somewhat better than Bethesda in each individual element then they'd see a massive drop-off from their fanbase.

I know Obsidian could do it no problem as long as they didn't have a deadline. I'm hoping they and InXile will team up again to make some new post-apocalypse or dystopian game. Perhaps Wasteland 3, but instead of isometric they make it in the style of New Vegas? That would certainly be interesting but at the same time I doubt a lot of fans would go for it.
