Th4if no more.

The unavoidable combat segments are the strange bit. It's like the devs had amnesia after the experience with Deus Ex. And then they forgot that the game they're working on should act the grownup as the father of all stealth games...

The closest the thief series had to a boss fight was a situation where you had to steal and replace the "eye" of the trickers with a replica.

So are the original games worth a play, are there improved textures, etc - Like System Shock 2? Which game is considered the definitive Thief game?

Yes and yes, respectively. I think Thief 2 is considered the most representative of the series' strengths, but Thief Gold has much more level variety (tomb raiding and horror, as well as ordinary burglary).

Ss2 and Thief were on the same engine and ther are similar improvements for Thief on the respective community sites.

This is actually the work of Eidos Montreal's B team, where HR and Thi4f were being worked on simultaneously.
You should look at the list of developers, who have all worked on kids' games, mobile/tablet games and other things nobody has ever heard of.
Depending on your love of the Thief classics, that's either quite sad or very hilarious.

I think any game between thief 1 and 3 is worth to be played. Thief 3 was not really that bad, albeit you can clearly see on the PC that it was a console port. But I think thief 3 had the better story compared to thief 2. But all 3 games are decent. I always liked the fact about the thief games that they have been a bit different. Particularly in Thief 1, the game was rather brutal as far as gameplay goes.

I don't know what that means. I just played Thief Gold for the first time a couple of years ago, and I thought the gameplay was just fine. In fact, I wouldn't recommend starting your Thief experience with anything other than the first one.

In general I don't like strictly first-person games, but I liked Thief.

Sadly, I had pre-ordered it and was naive enough not to cancel it.

I played it for one hour & had to stop. Too boring/stupid/annoying/railroaded/shitcontrols. The characters you're supposed to connect to on an emotional level to draw you into the story all suck balls (including Garrett himself).

Wanting to like it (due to the old games), I gave it another try, played it for 10 minutes & promptly uninstalled it.

I mean compared to games today, you cant really go on a rampage in Thief 1. No health regeneration for example. And the maps could be quite difficult and confusing. It was one of those games that can drive you crazy, finding the objective or the exit. It was a great experience. Like the possesed church, or the house of the trickster (after he revealed himself), the abanonded mines etc. Not to mention the game was pretty long, compared to today.

I understand what you mean. I agree. The game has hints, but no specific help like an arrow on the screen pointing to where you should go next. That's part of what's great about it.

I don't consider it hard because of that, though. It's more like all the "help" in newer games makes them childishly simple.

I remember that, as I played Thief for the first time, every mission upped the ante. I never knew for sure what was coming next, and every new mission had it's own distinct character. It's a really great experience.

Errant Signal's video explains pros and cons of it, close to my own views.
you could have noted in your post that it's got SPOILERS. I know it's at the beginning of the video as well, but.. good Internet linkage etiquette? ;)

Anyway. Spoilers aside I think the author took it apart quite nicely and constructively. The review ended not with random bashing or teenage whining but with a bigger picture and comments on (franchise/)game development in general. I do appreciate that.
