The Guns and Ammo Thread

i think i mentioned before that i reserved the ugly ass but oh so fun Vz 58 V a while ago. (325 euros for the gun, cleaning kit, 4 mags, mag pouch, sling, bayonet,...)

the gunshop owner took it to the belgian testbench to have it approved for use (all imported guns must go through the proces).
well, i just got a call from the gunshop owner, he was still at the testbench.
the shipment of weapons he sent to the testbench for proofing, were all deactivated instead!
so my nice little assault rifle just became a fucking paperweight...

that's just... wow...

now, no skin off my back, since there are thousands of new Vz58V's floating around. but hell, can you imagine to have a nice vintage firearm proofed and it comes back deactivated?

(and yes, belgian style deactivation means boring out the chamber, plugging the barrel, welding the firing pin, mollesting the extractors, etc. so it's DEACTIVATED for real...)

no one, but it would help your credibility if you actually designated your weapons correctly?

That's the closed bolt chek version of the AK right? Saw 6-7 at the gun show last week, they were selling for $450.00

Looked well put together, but nothing special - just another AK varient.

ps - Belgium sucks

the Vz 58 (mil) or CZ 858 (civ) has nothing to do with the AK, except that they shoot the same munition and are both gas piston operated. and that's where all the similarities end.

it's a striker fired design, that indeed fires from a closed bolt. no parts are interchangable with an AK.

it has more to do with a Bren gun (ZB 26) than an AK...

I might interject that it is a sweet rifle! Maybe not as pretty as the ak, but none the less is a sweet rifle.

The Ruger Alaskan in .454 casull - one of the largest pistol calibers made. Ought to be able to stop any kind of zombie with this monster.

Quite possibly the silliest gun purchase I have ever made. I can no longer make fun of people who buy dumb guns. Now I are one.

I had to order ammo from Midway, as the local gunshops were either way too pricey ($63.00 for a box of 20 shells) or didn't have any ammo for the Alaskan at all. Midway had great selection with much better pricing ($25.00 per box).

I picked out the .454 because you can shoot .45 long colt out of it as well. I ordered some 300 grain high velocity jacketed hollow points (zombie killers) and some 250 grain semi-wad cutter-like stuff for practice. It's supposed to kick like an angry mule - if it does seem like too much, I might have it magna-ported to reduce the recoil.

I also had to order the holster from Ruger as nobody around here has any kind of leather that will fit the Alaskan.

what's that? 2"? 2.5" max? sjeezes... worst i do is shooting .44Mag hunting ammo out of a 4". my wrists just can't take it. (since commercially loaded .44Mag is more like .44Spl nowadays...)

as for leather, you can easily have it custom made, without totally spending through the ass. do not store the gun in the leather though, if you leave it overtime it's likely to stain. (though it's a stainless revolver, i guess it's less of an issue)

still, in time i do think i'll be needing a "hobby" room to store all this stuff. ;)

Sorry to ask such a question SuAside, but what do you exactly do with these guns? :)
are you a collector or something like that?
I know you aren't mercenary!

It's a 2.5" barrel and the 300 grain high velocity load is pretty awesome - although you lose some velocity because of the short barrel (about 1200 fps, instead of 1600 fps) and about 1100 ft. pounds of energy from the muzzle.

The custom leather holster from Ruger was only $89.00 and of course you don't leave a gun in a leather holster - this ain't my first rodeo sonny.

damn painful for my wrists, is the only thought i get from that. :)

(got workrelated RSI etc)

well, i had a friend who long shot pistols etc, but eventually got a revolver. he of course wanted a nice leather holster with it. he got a safariland.

so there you have his nice blued S&W .44Mag... only used every once in a while. mostly lying in his gun safe.

after 7 months, he gets it out, his nice blueing all ruined. :(

boohoo.

so i thought i'd mention it anyway.

my interests in guns are very wide:
1) fun: shooting is fun. duh!
2) training: shooting is something that you can practise all your life and still fail to master completely. it's something you can slowly get better at all your life. striving to improve.
3) the mechanical aspect: some guns are disturbingly simple, but others are technological marvels.
4) history: some guns have very interesting histories in their development (like the SAFN49) while others represent something in history (the Webley represents the British colonial empire, the Mosin-Nagant M/39 represents the Winter War,...)
5) cleaning: yes, cleaning. it's funny, i hate cleaning. even my motorcycle doesn't really get the attention it deserves... but my guns? somehow it's better than chilling out somewhere. it just makes me at peace with the world. Zen and the art of weapon's maintenance...
6) restoration: some guns have been terribly abused and it's really challenging and rewarding to bring them back to life (both esthetically & mechanically). my father restored an MG B GT (oldtimer), i got a totally restored K31 (a gun twice my age that barely looks a year old).
7) esthetics: some guns are just nice to look at.
8) be prepared: though i'm the last one to think i'll need my guns to defend myself, it's nice to know that if things go sour, i'll be ready (or as ready as one can be anyway).

hmm, interesting. now i know almost as good as nothing about guns but one thing i always wank to are Suppressors.
I found these old vids in youtube, don't know if the guy is well informed or not:

so i wanted to say that any kind of information given about suppressors would be very much appreciated! :D

along general lines, he's more or less correct. but he's missing a lot of stuff and tends to word some of his comments too strongly. i'll list some examples:
- a Nagant revolver can be suppressed, since it provides a gas seal around the cylinder before firing. it was a scout favorite in Russia during WW2.
- suppressors are not only useful when using subsonic ammo. suppressors in general are used to lower noise signature, to alter the sound (make it harder to recognise as a gunshot) and to make the shot harder to locate.
- suppressors can be made smaller, though it depends on what you want to achieve.
- 1911's can be fitted with innertia enhancers, which allow the gun to cycle properly, even when suppressed.

i think that video is also quite old. i mean he says that silencers for pistols aren't usually that small and that they still make a loud noise but this video for example shows a very small silencer that almost doesn't make any noise:

Serge13, check the commentaries for the video that you provided. You'll see why said pistol is so quiet.

Right,
Nagant have very little sound without any silencer too.
With silencer it probably more silent than automatic pistols with it.

I wish to own some 7,62 AKM. This is only weapons, that works in space. So it will exists in landing-to-Alpha-Centauri time. Not accurate as M16, but more reliable.
Also some sawed-off 12g shotgun as pistol
For long range Mauser98k

I will wait untill our goverment will be destroyed, bevause they dont like me to own guns.
I allowed to buy just only 12g long-barrel shothun and put it into safe. But i don't like such weapons

I need more ammo before the zombie apocalypse gets here...

I picked up a case of .308 and a case of .223 at the last gun show.

Next on the list, lots more shotgun shells.
