The Guns and Ammo Thread

Could be something as simple as somebody getting a high quality barrel chop and turning it into a hunting carbine, you see that quite often over here.

BTW, Sua, awesome pictures, I wish I could go to a show like that.

I agree that this is a possiblity, but there were some 23 1/2" mauser barrels produced.

The stock is what befuddles me, it doesn't have the grooves or the bolt relief you normally see on a gew98 of that era.

Why are you sure it is from that era?

My uncle has converted a 98 into a beautiful hunting rifle with a stock he made himself (he's a carpenter), but I don't think he messed with the barrel.

You should also probably take into account the fact that there probably were civilian hunting 98's made back then.

i don't know much about Gew 98's, but the factory stamp on the barrel looks more like you'd see on a commercial Mauser than on a military Mauser.

The headstamp reads:

Deutsche Waffen-und Munitionsfabriken Berlin 1917

Translated it means, German weapons and munitions factory.

DWM was a mauser factory in Berlin that was producing gew98's for the military in 1917 because Germany was in the middle of a war, you might recall.

Here's a pic of the gew98 with a stock that is exactly the same as my rifle's before it was cut down.

yes, i can read from your picture and i do believe my german is better than yours.

what i said was because all produced Mausers for the military in the WW2 period were marked with abbriviated names, such as BNZ (instead of the long Steyr Daimler Puch for instance).

i don't know if that was the case during WW1, but if it wasn't, it could point to being a Mauser produced for the civilian market.

if by most, you mean a fraction, then yes, sure.

if not, try going back some pages and see how many posts you have to go back to encounter one.

and it appears you still can't use proper quotes. that makes baby jezus sad. :(

yes, poor belgistanis. with their superior beer, excellent chocolat, good weaponfactories,...

I picked up my HKVP70z today.

It is awesome. It looks brand new. The finish is perfect and the gun is really crisp. I couldn't be more pleased.

One bizarro thing, it won't need a trigger job - the trigger pull is only 10 pounds maximum, maybe less. I guess somebody had a trigger job done on it or they replaced the original.

Pics to post later, gotta get ready for work now...

either way, i think Dammitboy's nostalgia plays a rather big role in this. :)

Absolutely. It was my first semi-auto. My first 9mm, and the first plastic pistol ever produced.

It's incredibly accurate thanks to the fixed barrel and the hexpolygon rifling. It carries 19 rounds, and it's a great conversation piece.

Alsoplustoo - it fieldstrips in 2 seconds flat.

Is it just me or do the 2 AKs at the bottom look like they are chambered in 7,62x54R, judging by the look of the magazine?

Never seen anything like that.

Could be....

Is that 3rd one from the top a break action scoped rifle?

it's a combination rifle, but yeah, break action.

as for the "AKs", they're Saiga shotguns in .410.

the bottom one is an AK102/104/105 clone & the other an AK74 clone.

kinda like the Safir T-something is an AR15 clone in .410 shotshell.

That's to bad, an AK chambered for 7,62x54R would've been interesting.

And I have to say after having fun at the Range with a Molot, I doubt I'll ever try anything "smaller" caliberwise.

i once saw a Romak/Cugir PSL 'commando', which was a PSL with shortened barrel (up to the gas tube).
should be only a tiny bit longer than an AK and not too expensive to mod.

of course, you'll need to revize the gas system though, due to loss of pressure in the barrel. but still, it's a 'short' 7.62x54R.
