Right, exactly, for posting some stupid shit. So why exactly can't Vergil be temp-banned instead of permanently banned? Temp-banning is perfectly understandable but a perma-ban for what we've established in the last 5 pages is basically a fluke?
Actually it is not a fluke, admins kept saying he had passed the three strike mark several times and was warned constantly. If he didn't change his behavior back then why would he change it if he gets unbanned?
That's exactly right, intent really IS a lot of it. Which is why all of this should warrant at most a temporary ban, not a permanent one. It's been established that Vergil's intent was jokey/sarcastic and not serious. Crossfire, the person he did it to, has even confirmed Vergil meant it in a jokey way. I can't speak for the other things like the "report spam" as I'm not able to see that, but from the one I've actually heard about (being where he reported that one Zeno guy for being a furry) it sounds like the intent is jokey as well.
He was banned this time because of spamming swasticas on a twibber feed, right? But Admins said he had have enough stuff to be banned a month ago and kept being warned about it.
I miss the guy, even if I didn't agree with many stuff he said I considered him an interesting person when he wasn't shitposting, but as a moderator and admin in other forums I know that rules are to be followed. When you get warned you should change your behavior or you will get banned, he showed no sign of changing or tone it down, as a matter of fact he seemed to tone it up lately (probably like you say it was jokes, but some jokes break the site rules too).
For example:
-He constantly double posted: "Do not double-post, there is an Edit function on this forum for adding more to the end of a thread if you are the last poster. If you accidentally double-post, you can delete the last post yourself as long as no one else has posted below you."
-He some times would just make a post containing just one picture (I even remember mentioning that it made me sad he kept just doing that in some thread when I was sure he had something interesting to say instead): "If you haven't got anything to say, don't post. Lurk before you post to make sure your post has something contributing to say."
-He would many times jump on the defensive and become aggressive when no one had actually attacked him (again about that time I said his replies of just one picture looked a bit childish and made me sad because I think he posts interesting things but for a few posts he kept replying just with one picture, and he started calling me names and stuff, i even then made another post where I politely explained what I meant in my first post because he seemed to have misunderstood): "Respect others as long as they respect you. If they disrespect you, simply ignore them. That means no flaming. That also means no death threats to any developers or media outlets, no matter how much you hate them. Don't be an idiot. It also means no trolling and no cross-site trolling."
-He many times posted only to insult others: "If your post is focused on another poster rather than the subject at hand then don't bother replying."
-He also derailed a few topics, but to be fair this seems to happen a lot lately so I don't know if this one would count, just look at this thread for example, totally derailed
: "Do not purposely derail a topic. This doesn't happen too much, but from now on when it does happen I'm going to remove the post. From there it either gets thrown into the Vats or made into its own thread, depending on it's quality. I do not want to micromanage threads like this, so please don't make me do it."
About the report button, if he used it as a joke it is also agains the rules and that one is a strikeable offense: "On the report button: use the report button to point out bad posts to admins. Use it and
do not reply to the post to point out the transgression, as that is backbench moderating. If an entire thread has gone bad, report only one posts, as reports have to be handled on a per-post basis. Spamming the report button is a strikeable offense."
I really have nothing against him but he kept breaking rules and I can see why he got banned. And to be fair, in the past people here were banned even faster and without much tolerance, in the old days Vergil wouldn't have lasted even half of the time he lasted.
Also the Order doesn't follow some of these rules because it is a hosted forum, it has it's own internal rules, so we can't compare what users say and do there with the NMA users.
