Tyranny Discussion Thread

Bought it this morning, played 2 hours.

I gotta say, the Conquest backstory is pretty damn cool. I haven't reached a point where it influenced the narrative in a major way, but it's referenced several times already. Definitely adds massive replay value too.

The art design is also good. Pillars of Eternity was a bit too generic high fantasy; Tyranny goes for a late antiquity style that I dig, albeit a few elements stick out like a sore thumb such as the Archon of War's magic armor.

I also like the magic creation system. It's fairly bare-bones this early in the game, but looking at all the possible combinations it looks like we'll be able to do some pretty cool things with it. Good thing I made my character a mage.

The writing is (obviously) great thus far, and I do have a feeling Obsidian lets you be a dick without being a psychopath. I'm planning to Lawful Evil my way through this and the game perfectly supports it thus far, and from what I've seen you also don't have to be a total douchebag either so that's cool.

My one complaint thus far is the narrative clash between the fact that you're supposed to be this experienced Fatebinder with years of campaigns beneath your belt, but you start at level 1 with the crappiest equipment regardless.

But isn't that the most FUN video game cliche ever?

Especially when it happens in sequels
>Play the first game
>get to level 100 god mode with god-slaying artifact equipment, and enough skills to decimate entire armies
>Play sequel
>Even if it begin immediately after the first game ends, you start at level 1 with a leather belt and a iron dagger

Hmm, Tyranny's combat is... rather boring, but I do like the dialogue. I feel like Obsidian didn't do the experienced Judicator enough and wussed out, deciding to stay with strong fantasy RPG cliches.

Combat has always been secondary to me when it comes to RPGs. Planescape Torment is arguably the best CRPG ever made and the combat is trash in that.
Yeah but they have a really extensive dialogue system and a really interesting premise which they play up for strength.

Fair enough. Tyranny's world is interesting enough thus far. Unless things go to complete shit, I'll likely finish it which is more than I can say for most games these days .

This looks great so far. The conquest feature is awesome, I love that kind of thing.

Also loving the depth of the lore and visual design. Feels very unique.

I don't know, I have mixed feelings. So far it's really good, but I'm worried about the ending and I don't like the combat at all.

From what little I've played, and what I heard, the general consensus is that Tyranny is an ok game but
-The combat is meh
-There is quite a bit of mildly SJW stuff in it
-The ending is grade A garbage that's not even really an ending.(I don't know what the ending is, nor would I say it even if I did, all I have heard is that its pretty terrible)

have you ever play it?

Anyone could say anything they want pre-release, but i think tyranny is very good game. maybe not in same vein as classic such as torment but its definitely miles better than Pillars. I dont know where you get that 'general concensus from' but so far the steam review is solid

yeah sorry i dont notice it, but to me its just find though. Honestly i tired of these SJW kind of writing accusation, care to provide example?

They make a big deal about how men cant own land in the southern land, and how land always passes between females.
A large number of characters are female and its constantly shoved in your face how strong they are.
There is more then one blatantly lesbian couple.
Kills-In-Shadow's profile description reads like bad furry fan fiction.
Verse's whole backstory reads like some Mary Sue character sheet
One woman even threatens to shove a staff up a guys ass until he prolapses.

Its a lot of little stuff, and it doesn't ruin the game or anything, but it all adds up over time, and reeks of pandering. Especially given the kind of time period the game is set in.

While not SJW pandering, theres also a lot of really odd writing choices and uses of modern anachronisms in an otherwise medieval setting. People say stuff like "Captain fuckwit here" and ".... the legal term is fuck you I'm the law!"

Holy shit, This^^^^^^^^

Seriously, read this and tell me this isn't cringe. https://blog.tyrannygame.com/2016/10/11/dev-diary-11-kills-in-shadow/

For a game that you can evil in or that evil actions are supposed ubequious. It seems suspect that you can't do a number of things that include but not limit towards, Being sexist, Racist etc to the world around. But who knows, I haven't heard of anything so far other than you can be an asshole and just hit people for no reason.

i thought it was for sourthern kingdom? in sourthern land yes only woman could own land but only man could own ship. But when kyros came, all were given equal opportunity. I mean that is written in first page of character creation.

Yeah it was my bad, fixed it in the presvious post

Its stuff like the pics below that really make a lot of the writing in the game rather cringy.
