Tyranny Discussion Thread

Well everyone have their opinion, and their own taste. I personally find it very enjoyable. Not many games treat you as badass authoritative figure, right at the start of game.
They always are kinda pissy about it though :P

i find it like the infinte cycle of gaming, people will try to find every flaw to a game at release week. When negativity is enough, they will just find a way to love it back again. Give it just about 3 week and somebody will gonna shout " the game is not have praise its deserve" :P

It can happen the opposite of course, the "Honeymoon" phenomenon. It happened with Falluto and in a different way DS3

I meant the NPCs though, by being sincere you get a lot of shit

but it's quite annoying to have an expert dual wielder suddenly doing no damage at all because some dude wears bronze armor.
my mindset in every fantasy setting is that dual wielding was supposed to increase your DPS and how many enemies that you could engange. In real life, all dual wielding technique is limited to slashing attack or a combination of dagger + sword; and both were never intended as a weapon in dealing against armour. But rather, as a weapon that increase your chance to parry and blade locking. Its more about personal combat. So at least to me, its undestandable. If you want to deal againts armor, go with spear or javeline which again, just like in real life situation

I'm playing a Diplomat, because the whole idea of telling a judge that they are wasting your time by bringing you to court, in many ways seems really badass.

What background did you guys pick?

I got Soldier solely to Spear harder. It also complements helping Graven Ash's (Cinéreo wtf) faction, you get some pretty badass quips.
Made a Noble char but the game crashed halfway through Conquest mode so that stayed there

Sure, but when going against heavy armor, it's the thin long daggers that were lethal in finishing people off. Halfswording is a compromise for that.
Though obviously, blunt force trauma also worked.

But that's not what we're seeing here. It's not a rock-paper-scissors kind of thing.

Either way, not a fan of the combat system as a whole. It's overly complicated and you end up using the same sequence of skills over & over again.

So far, I enjoy Tyranny. I like how it twists the usual rules of Vogler/Campbell's storytelling, while acknowleding them. You start after the main conflict, out of a comfort zone, and already established as a person of authority. It's interesting, and I'm curious where this is going, really.
I also like the Paradox touch, with the conquest mechanics that defines your character more than your skills and character sheet. Also, the different currencies, which makes way more sense than just "gold coins" or similar. The universe is interesting, visually unique, and the characters seem original.
As much as I never felt immersed by Pillars of Eternity, Tyranny makes me want to play more, understand this world and move on with the quest. As far as I'm concerned, that's what I expect from a good RPG.

I just hope there won't be some kind of twist like "you are the good guy, in the end" like in Suicide Squad. I heard that the game is too short, don't know it yet... We'll see. So far, I'm glad with my purchase.

As for Kyros' sex:
Sirin tells you Kyros is a "she" in most of her speech, but sometimes it's suddenly "he"?

The devs have clarified that no one, possibly not even the Archons, actually know, so they call him both.

And its speculated in game it could be one person, it could be a title passed along a family, and it could be a whole organization of powerful people.

Tunon calls Kyros by "she" all the time, and he looks closer to Kyros
"The imperial harem has plenty of both"

Probably a hint at the characters' personality, rather than a direct indication of Kyros' sex. Wether they decide to see their superior being as a female or as a male. A bit like in New Vegas, where you can guess the level of education and the allegeances of an NPC depending on the way he/she pronounces "Caesar".

Some interesting concept, behind name of Kyros

Kyros (KIR os)

The Greek word for power that is legitimate, but limited and compassionate

The Greek language permits more clarity for nuances in meaning than English does. Just think of all the Greek words we translate simply as “love” in English. And there is cronos for human’s linear time and kairos for God’s time. Likewise, Greeks name both the expressions of power, which we might naively call “good power” and “bad power”. Power in itself is not good or bad, anymore than anger is good or bad. Yet its expression can be harmful or beneficial, damaging or appropriate.

In ancient Greece, a man might use one kind of power (despos) toward slaves, but use a different kind of power (kyros) to his wife and children. In that patriarchal system, men held the power in the culture – yet vocabulary itself helped men understand appropriate expression of their authority over others. Kyros indicates a legitimate, but more limited, moral authority whose wielder takes into consideration the good of those over whom it is exercised. Such restricted power is not abused.

For some characters, yes, but for Sirin, no. She rubs it in your face that she knows more but refuses to tell you because that way she has some power over you. Sirin spent a few years with Kyros afterall.

Sirin also calls Nerrat "it". :)

I find it very difficult to suspend my disbelief that a game being marketed as being the evil forces whom carries out the will of this massive nebulas overlord wouldn't rape, Also the fact that kyros is bringing gender equality is a bit weird. Kills-In-Shadow, Again still cringe worthy. Females i guess are the leaders since i only ever see female leaders and generals in tyranny. Dissapointment to say the least. :/

When i thought that this game was coming out, I was hoping hardcore and mature shit could ensue as a means of trying to convey a commentary about our own world. To put our own atrocities on stage to give some sort of take or opinion in a tastefully way. Sugaring coating it just makes it look contrived and loses its touch in the process. The term for lack of a better word is... irreducible. This is irreducible to change the way it seems, Yeah it seems you can torture people. Which is okay and expected as it encourage, Where is the racist, sexist facet of this "evil oppressor" to me it seems more like you're the evil dude and kyros is just some god figure that is more or less a warmonger than an actual criminal with crimes against humanity.

I see now what Chris was talking about in his interview not wanting to work with obsidian again, It seems they changed and perhaps its best this new obsidian doesn't make the next fallout as atleast in fallout: New Vegas i actually learned something about the themes of said game. (Humans still being stubborn, People constantly dividing one another. Different philosophies and the ethics of how they work.) The legion for instance being sexist as all hell. This game to me reeks of "Girl power" with some cringy dialogue in some aspects of the game.

Sounds like the developers were liberal sjws.

While I find the fairly constant SJW shit annoying, I wouldn't go that far.

Though Tyranny, in general, does seem like a step down from PoE, or NV, in terms of writing.
