Tyranny Discussion Thread

It's basically how Skyrim works. Rather than levelling up your skills once you gain a level like in, say, Fallout 1, you can only level up your skills through using them.

But skyrim does not have a skill tree. If i remember right you just pick up your major/minor skills and since the skills are pretty basic, except magic where you either get, or buy a spell to use, you just pick up and axe, sword, shield, or skulk around etc. And even without the major/minor skills, you still have all the skills at your disposal from the start.

From this screenshot it seems that you don't have all the skills from the start, the magic section only has one. That is also clearly visible here:

tyranny_dev_diary_02_talentsheet.png

The leadership section is empty. And the highlighted skill is pretty specific one that gives you a stat boosts. It also mentions that you need 7 talents points. So my question is how exactly do you get talent points for a skill tree like "power" if you level up your skills by using them, what kind of a an activity do you participate in, to get points for the "power" skills?

They also mentioned it's more than 6 trees, as both your AI companions and you yourself with have special skill trees only you or they can use. I guess like how in Dragon Age Inquisition your companions had a special tree of skills only they could use, such as Solas with Fade magic. No one else was able to acquire those skills.

Well you still only have 6 trees for the character you are building, but yeah, it's great that your companions will have unique skills. That probably means that they will be fleshed out pretty good like in POE, as why else would they put that much attention on a character that would act as cannon fodder.

Why would there be? For all intents and purposes your class is the fatebinder, nothing else.

Well they did not mention if a fatebinder is based on any specific set of skills, his duties are to solve problems in whatever way he deems fit. So he could be a shaman, an assasin, or a space station engineer if it helps him solve problems.

Exactly, but his class would still be a fatebinder.

The fourth developer diary for Tyranny is now live. In this dev diary, learn more about the Archons!

Tunon the Adjudicator, Archon of Justice

In our last dev update, I introduced you to the role of Fatebinder and Tunon the Adjudicator – one of the Archons you’ll encounter in Tyranny. Today I want to talk about the Archons, and introduce you to more of these incredibly powerful characters.

Archons are women and men who possess incredible powers. They are more than just skilled fighters or mages. Each Archon has unique abilities that set them above the rest of humanity. Pox, the third Archon of Ruin under Kyros’ rule, can wither the limbs of her enemies with a glance and spread plague with a touch. Cairn, Archon of Stone, is a giant of a man with skin the hue and strength of granite, able to shatter the earth with a thought.

No one knows how Archons gain their strength. Some Archons were born to power and privilege. Others were beggars in the street before their powers manifested. The only common thread among Archons is that they serve Kyros. Or they die.

Few Archons have appeared in the latter decades of the Overlord’s rule. If one believes the legends of the time before Kyros, new Archons arose every few decades. These new Archons, called exarchs, would challenge the current Archon of their powers for dominance. The most famous of these legends tells of a young exarch challenging the Sun Queen, Archon of Fire. Their battle lasted for days and created the Scar, a miles-wide swath of destruction that persists to this day, centuries later.

Dozens of Archons currently bow to Kyros’ will. Below is more information on some you will meet while playing Tyranny.

Archon of War

tyranny_dev_diary_04_gravenashe.png

Graven Ashe, Archon of War

Graven Ashe is the Archon of War and general of the Disfavored, one of Kyros’ elite armies. Before serving Kyros, Graven Ashe fought against the Overlord in defense of his homeland. It was during this desperate defense that Ashe’s powers as an exarch began to manifest. His soldiers would rise from the battlefield, healed of all but the most lethal wounds.

These abilities allowed his army to resist the Overlord’s invasion for longer than any other since the early days of Kyros’ conquest. They also brought him to the attention of Blood Ruin, then Archon of War and leader of Kyros’ invading soldiers.

The final battle between Graven Ashe and Blood Ruin was the greatest of the Age. Though Ashe ultimately emerged triumphant – claiming the mantle of Archon of War – he and his army were weakened by the battle and Ashe was captured by other Archons loyal to Kyros.

Graven Ashe was dragged before Kyros. No one knows what the Overlord said, or did, to the rebellious general. But from that day forward, Graven Ashe served Kyros loyally as the new Archon of War.

Archon of Secrets

tyranny_dev_diary_04_voicesofnerat.png

The Voices of Nerat, Archon of Secrets

Few in the Empire speak of the Voices of Nerat for only the foolish wish to draw the eye of Kyros’ Spymaster and torturer. Over hundreds of years of service to the Overlord, his blood-soaked hands have crushed rebellions and condemned countless traitors.

Many questions surround the most enigmatic of Archons. Only Kyros and the eldest Archons remember the Voices’ origin, and they do not speak of it. Is Nerat the name of a person? A place? Or something else entirely? What powers does he possess, and what face lies behind his ornate bronze mask? The answers to these questions may grant power over the Archon. Or they may be merely a series of false trails, mysteries engendered by the Archon to distract his enemies.

Beyond all of the questions, a few facts are known. The Voices serves Kyros with a fanatic’s devotion. Even the slightest hint of treason is enough to draw his wrath. Many believe this is the reason that the Voices despises Graven Ashe with such intensity; he refuses to forgive even though the Overlord accepted Ashe’s surrender.

In recent years the Voices of Nerat has formed his own army under Kyros rule. Forsaking the whispers of his spies and the sanguine gloom of his torture chambers, the Archon of Secrets now marches to war as leader of the Scarlet Chorus. Less an army than a howling mob, the Chorus is like a swarm of bladed locusts that ravages the land – and people – they march over. The only rein on their wildness is their Archon’s brutal nature.

Archon of Shadows

tyranny_dev_diary_04_bledenmark.png

Bleden Mark, Archon of Shadows

The eyes of Bleden Mark watch from every shadow. He is Kyros’ executioner, tasked with ending the lives of those Kyros deems dangerous. There is no army that marches behind Bleden Mark, no city hails him as ruler, and no great monument that boasts his name. While the other Archons surround themselves with human trappings, Bleden Mark is cloaked solely in shadow.

Though Bleden Mark owes allegiance to Kyros, the Archon of Shadows is often used to carry out Tunon’s judgments. Those whom Tunon finds unworthy, or guilty of breaking the law, will die. It does not matter how many soldiers or mages a guilty woman surrounds herself with – who can protect themselves from their own shadow?

Hopefully you enjoyed this glimpse at some of the most powerful figures in Kyros’ Empire. An Archon can be your greatest ally – or your deadliest enemy.

Next week we’ll be at E3 in Los Angeles. We’ll start talking a lot more about gameplay systems and combat after that!

i already like Graven Ashe, seems like the man that only serve evil cause when it was necessary. his backstory doesnt imply this man will enjoy himself as cruel and uncaring to his subject. well maybe that extent to all archon as well, since they're watched by kyros law. but who knows?

Thanks for sharing! Personally I find Bleden Mark to be the most interesting. He's considered an Archon yet he has no palaces, no statues, no glory. He's just a shadow that does Kyros's bidding and kills whoever Kyros or Turon needs dead. I think that's very interesting, sort of like a personal assassin for the big boss.

It'd sort of be like if, in New Vegas, instead of Caesar sending those Retribution Squads after you all the time, he just sent one guy, his most powerful assassin of all, to rip you a new ass. I like that concept quite a bit.

I do wonder now though, considering our character has the potential to learn magic and whatnot, if we ourselves can become Archons? That'd certainly be interesting since the main way to become an Archon is to have some big superpower.

well to be archon, you need to be an exarch. i dunno, maybe the game will include it as an option of Background past? integrate it as an "easy mode" :P lol. (a bit silly, playing on easy mode just to get a bit of choice and lore)

Fuck that, I want to know if we can overthrow Kyros and become Overlord our self.
pay 9.99 to become overlord! in brand new upcoming DLC :P

I doubt it, the game is about your personal story. you're not the Deus ex machina plot device. you're just random guy who manage to get power trying to living through the world Imo

I agree with Vergil, I want to commit a coup d'etat and establish my own ultra evil empire, fuck Kyros! Who needs him anyway?

Blasphemy! By Kyros, you will pay for your insolence with this line as proof of said insolence! (thus not breaking the law of Kyros and not losing my head before the release date)

Back on topic: I guess this means that not only must the player character operate as a Fatebinder that follows the law of Kyros enforced by the Archon of Justice, they need to work and curry favor with the other Archons to stay on their good side or gain protection from the ones that wish to kill you. Essentially a simulation of real world politics.

Automated combat coupled with automated character progression. Sounds fun...

Automated combat coupled with automated character progression. Sounds fun...

Actually combat sounds like it'll be better than Pillars of Eternity. You should read the Dev Diary #2, it goes into some detail about it. They also said at the end of Dev Diary #4 that they'd be showing combat footage either during E3 or after E3. I couldn't quite tell from their wording.

You should read the Dev Diary #2

I've read the dev diaries. Sounding like it'll be mildly better than PoE with combat design isn't really saying very much, being that it's still RtWP. Adding to the "Watch combat happen" "Watch character progression happen" also doesn't raise the stakes much. :P

This thing overall doesn't sound like something I'd wet my pants for. A couple of good ideas partnered with boring setting and offputting lore and gameplay that doesn't really sound very interesting, and with everything smelling like a fast middlework. Obsidian is too hung up with generic high fantasy.

We'll see how it goes. Migth be fine, might be something else, but right now it doesn't sound like something to specifically tune the radar for. Which is a shame because I like the general idea of a smaller but more reactive game (especially from Obsidian).

All this hype-up for the Archons makes me wonder if the next Dev Diary will be about Kyros himself? Now that we've seen the artwork for all the Archons, it made me realize those faces on the main page of the Tyranny website only show the Archons and the Grand Archon Turon. There's no pictures of Kyros -- yet. All we know about this guy is that he's the one who took over the world, the guy Caesar wanted to become like. On the one hand, I kinda like the mystery of not seeing Kyros until the game begins. It'd be like, how with Caesar, you only hear about him and the Legion from regular citizens. You'll probably be under the impression he's some monster, someone like Legate Lanius only even bigger and more destructive, especially once you see the destruction at Nipton. However, when you actually meet him he's just a balding old man in his late 50s who sounds like an average guy, instead of the Legate Lanius 2.0 I was expecting when I first walked in his tent.

On the other hand, I'd like to at least learn some backstory about him before the game begins so we can know a little about who we work for. I wonder if he'll be as hypocritical/jokey/temperamental as Caesar is? I still love how New Vegas had the balls to make you fail the entire Legion questline if you just talked to Caesar too much while he had one of his headaches. He'd warn you he'd sic the guards on you if you talk to him again, and then he actually fucking does it if you try to. I hope Tyranny will have stuff like that just so you're reminded you're not some top dog like you think you are. You're still at the mercy of Kyros/Caesar.
