Tyranny Discussion Thread

As long as it's meaningful and carve its' own mark on our hearts (with amazing cRPG's experiences, of course), I wouldn't mind. Fallout 1 was relatively much shorter than Fallout 2, but it carved mark on my heart (despite I played it after Fallout 3 and NV). I'm personally hoped it would have bitter-sweet ending(s), like Fallout 1's.
Agreed, I loved Fallout 1 ending.

Another isometric RPG from Obsidian? Sign me up. This seems like a platform for some really cool storytelling. I'm excited to see where this goes.

Ah fantastic, thanks for sharing! How are you getting notified of these btw? I subscribed to the Paradox news letter just for Tyranny stuff and they haven't sent me diddly squat thus far regarding Tyranny.

Looking at the new info, it looks like there will indeed be consequences for trying to be a goody goody or being too irrational with a ruling. For instance, if you step "too far outside the bounds of Kyros's law" even as a judge of said law, then your boss the Archon will have you "executed immediately". I can imagine any sort of overly do-gooder acts would result in this.

If you're too irrational or evil with a ruling and the person being accused just so happens to be friends with the Archon, that can also go badly for you, kinda like how real life politicians play favorites with people. If you touch one of their "favorites" then they'll just be released on the spot because corruption. Sounds like the same thing happens in even Kyros's empire.

I'm curious how this law will play out in the game;

"Vows Made in Kyros’ Name: Any vow or expression made using Kyros’ name is a binding legal contract. Breaking such a vow is punishable by death. A statement as simple as, “By Kyros, that man is an idiot!” places the speaker in dire peril. An enemy who hears that and can gather both witnesses to your vow, and proof that the man in question is not an idiot, can have you executed."

I want to imagine there'll be some mind games with it. Perhaps you're trying to accuse someone of murdering one of Kyros's soldiers, but you can't quite find enough evidence. If you can convince him to say something like "By Kyros, your investigation skills are horrible!" and you can prove they aren't, then you get to kill him on the spot instead of taking him to trial. I dunno, that's probably a bad example, but I'm expecting wordplay to be very important with that rule.

So for those of you who don't know, Obsidian announced a new game yesterday slated to come out this year. It's called Tyranny. Here's a link to the website and the steam page:

The game is going to be isometric like Pillars of Eternity but you won't be the hero in this game. You're the villain. The villains already won in this game, you're just a lackey of the main bad guy. We don't know much about the gameplay outside of the fact that you, as a judge for the main bad guy, get to play executioner and lawmaker in your master's new provinces, and what you say goes.

Just like Obsidian's last 2 games, Pillars and New Vegas, there's bound to be many many different ways of playing, along with a bountiful collection of choices for almost every mission. I'm a little bummed out by the fact that it has a medieval setting when this plot could have worked just as well in a modern or sci-fi setting, but I trust Obsidian to make a fantastic adventure for us. Plus no recent games have really given us an opportunity to be pure evil. For example, Fallout 4 had less evil options than I have fingers.

It sounds like we don't have to just be evil though, we can go against our master's wishes and play as a good guy. It certainly sounds interesting to be playing on the opposite side for once for the whole game. Really the only time I can think of where an entire game/DLC was made around the concept of being evil, it was a small one in Dragon Age Origins that made you the leader of a Darkspawn squadron during the final battle of the game. That was pretty fun but really really short. Then I guess there was Prototype. The first one anyway.

I'm definitely looking forward to Tyranny even if the medieval setting is starting to wear out its welcome.

What do you think the game will be like? What would you like to see in it? What features would make this game great? Discuss below.

I heard they were working with Paradox Interactive.

Paradox Interactive makes the best of strategy games.

I am gonna love it.

Wow, this game looks absolutely amazing. From what I've seen of it, it seems like... "Planescape Torment meets Legacy of Kain, with some touches of New Vegas".
I've rarely been that much excited for a game. Last time was for "Legacy of Kain : defiance", so it has been a long time. Maybe "Torment" and "Wasteland 2", but really, "Tyranny" looks like the absolute boss :)
Probably one of the very, very few games I'll buy with eyes closed. The others being the ones from Frictional Games and inXile Entertainment. I think I'll even avoid reading anything about it until I can get my hands on it.

there is map detailing the world, though most were still locked till the game release

It doesn't seem very big, but at the same time Pillars of Eternity looks really really small too location-wise on the map, but it honestly had quite a lot to do. I just hope there's plenty of exploration to be had.

I like the art style of the map interface and the idea to make it interactive in the web. The theming/art direction of the game looks very clean and seemless (good, easy on the eyes colors). Don't know if the screenshots are ingame footage, but i hope they are, because everything looks like a painting.

I read up on the skills, but i'm not sure if i understand everything. So there will be no "classes" just 6 skills trees in which you will be able to raise certain skills by doing that particular thing? So i would assume that you will get all the 1st level skills, from all the trees, as how else are you going to raise your skills by using them?

The walls on the map look like pipelines. They're probably not, but that'd be interesting. I remember the strange mix between medieval fantasy and victorian industry in Legacy of Kain : Blood Omen 2. Maybe this universe will take a similar direction.

It will probably be something in the spirit of Planescape Torment. No class at the start, you take some sort of equivalent at some point during the story, depending on who you meet and what you do. Or maybe you stick with some kind of Inquisitor modular class. Who knows.

It's basically how Skyrim works. Rather than levelling up your skills once you gain a level like in, say, Fallout 1, you can only level up your skills through using them. They also mentioned it's more than 6 trees, as both your AI companions and you yourself with have special skill trees only you or they can use. I guess like how in Dragon Age Inquisition your companions had a special tree of skills only they could use, such as Solas with Fade magic. No one else was able to acquire those skills.
