You're exactly right on that. Some people with gambling addiction histories actually have to avoid certain games due to this. They can't handle the same thrill feeling that video games are now providing.I'm pretty sure everyone would prefer that you can just buy everything directly instead of having to basically gamble with lootboxes. And if there's anyone that actually likes them, it's literally because of the dopamine rush you get from opening them and that's addictive.
I play games with lootboxes in them. I've not ever directly bought them. Never have in other games I enjoy either. Hell, in Apex Legends, you can buy skins for about 18 USD and that's WAY TOO MUCH for a First Person perspective game. Why would I buy a skin on my character that I only see the hands of? Sure if it was 3-4 bucks, I might actually buy it directly. But I'll be damned if it's ever above 5 bucks or buying a mass of lootboxes. Fuck all that noise. I buy the battlepass which I bought twice so far. If you complete it, it buys you the next season's. I bought it season 1 and it was bad and I wasn't playing much so I didn't fully finish it. Season 2 was fine and I had fun, and it repaid it's own battlepass so now in Season 3 I didn't have to buy it.
I've spent 20 bucks on the game in total since February and play it a few times a week at least. Others I've met have spent 300+ over the same course of time.
