Van Buren video

If you are curious about the music, it is "Dream a Little Dream of Me" performed by Connie Francis.

Minor nitpick: this version of "Dream a Little Dream of Me" was actually performed by a group called Beautiful South. I'm not sure if Connie Francis ever actually covered the song, but if she did, I couldn't find any evidence.

It fit beautifully with the video, by the way. I must say, I'm just as curious as the rest of the mob as to how you came into this belated windfall.

tonight i shall take my melancholy to bed and cry myself to sleep

thank you NMA

Say nighty-night and kiss me
Just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me
While I'm alone and blue as can be
Dream a little dream of me

I will Van Buren, I will

me...

"Maaybee... You'll think of me
when you are all alone
Maybe the one who is waiting for you
Will prove untrue
then what will you do?

Maybe you'll sit and sigh
wishing that I were near
Then maybe you'll ask me to come back again
And maybe I'll say "Maybe"
"

OMG, hearing this music again gives me the creeps, really. Who could tell it would be so fitting  I'll explain:

"Maaybee... You'll think of me
when you are all alone
[I guess we all can see why we're all alone now]
Maybe the one who is waiting for you
[which is... guess what: Fallout 3]
Will prove untrue
[I'm sure it will]
then what will you do?
[good question: storm bethesda with laser rifles?]

Maybe you'll sit and sigh
wishing that I were near
Then maybe you'll ask me to come back again
And maybe I'll say "Maybe"
[I do hope you will come back someday, my dearest Fallout... I do hope  ]"

Ah, so I wasn't mistaken in thinking that the song sounded a little too "clean" for something that should be 50 years old. I would have preferred Mama Cass's version over this one.

Now, as for the demo. While it's great to see what could have been, I can't say I liked it. It just all screamed "I wanna be Neverwinter Nights!" at me, which is only a good thing if you wanted to play Fallout in co-op mode. But of course, I'm basing this opinion off a video of an early demo.

What's really bothering me, is that Bethesda will look at the video, look at the reactions here, and think it's actually OK to create a Fallout game with real-time combat and more emphasis on graphics than content.

And don't be surprised if the Beth-fans will use the "it's only a tech-demo!" argument when Bethesda finally releases some footage of Fallout 3 for us to pick apart and criticize.

EDIT: Cleanup.

A cursory glance at the BethSoft forums makes that unlikely.

Bethesda never shows anything from pre-alpha stages, and usually shows its producted when in the nearly-finished state. So no, that won't work.

I personally really liked Fallout Tactics, it's not as bad as everyone says it is. And the Power Armour looks much better than in the original games (I usually refuse to wear PA except as disguise in FO2 because it looks so ugly ingame)...
Dislike for Fallout's PA is a feature of you, not of Power Armor. I like it's look - it's 50ish and Falloutish.
On the other hand FT PA isn't - of course it's pimped out and looks "cool", but it doesn't fit the Fallout style nor canon.

I liked the video very much. thanks NMA!

first the Van Buren pictures, then the design documents followed by a video of the pre-alpha demo. Guess its only a matter of time until the actual demo gets leaked.

You've gotta playyy your own kinda music! SING! Your own special soong! ...
*cough* I don't know... I don't think her music does not fit the Fallout universe for me... When ever I hear her music I think of the TV show Lost... Then I think about Sun... yeeeeeaahhh. *clears throat* -excuse me...

i dont think it got "leaked", i guess someone had it all the time and waited for some special moment.. although i can't think of any special events to prove my theory

That video looked like Sim City. The graphics looked too 'nice', even the damaged walls look like cartoon rather than what was in Fallout 1. I prefered the harsh graphics in Fallout 1. And just look at the character! He looks like a comedian!

This is the pre-alpha tech demo. You can rag on the graphics, but that's kind of pointless considering the phase of development it was in.

It is possible, that after this you're not going to like me.

I think, if that combat system(RT) and graphics (Impresionally worse than F1 had!) were continued, Van buren would be the worst game in Fallout saga :/ Only very good story and dialogs would have chance to save it.
Maybe the lose of VB wasn't as much as everybody thinks?

I think I'm going to smash my head in now. Why can't people read? Like the part where it's been stated over and over *and over* again in this thread that both the graphics and the combat system were *placeholders*. They would have been changed.

Fuck.

Techdemos, and alphas shows us a minimum. After watching that Iam sure, that graphics and system wont be worse, but I still dont know hom much better it is going to be finally.

Match some early screens with final screns of any game. How big are the diferences?

There would have been turn-based at the very least. Most of this was a placeholder, almost *everything* would have changed.

They never got to the point of 'final screens' or graphics.

Those are not even early screens. You don't usually get to see screens of games this early in the development stage. If you did you'd probably think they're crap too.

I do wonder, though, how the devs could have pulled off being able to choose between turn-based and real-time combat.
Worked fine in Fallout Tactics...

Yes. And by fine I mean "crappy".
So, it's like the old adage of being a jack-of-all-trades and a master of none. It probably would have been best, then, to pick one over the other. And IMHO, I honestly don't know how a game like Fallout would work with real-time combat. Why fix something that isn't broken?

About real time combat. Didnt you noticed that there is no such thing like one system with turn and RT modes? In F:Tactics there were actually two systems based on the same set of parameters. The systems were not equal - two groups of NPC's fighting in RT would give different efect (winner and kills) than in TB. One was more usefull in some situations during game than the other one.

.... ok... let's start downloading techdemo :)

Nice video even if the audio track choice is not perfect ...

( it's actually *not* Connie Francis who's singing the song in the video ... you can tell that the sound is too "fresh from the studio/CD" ...
I would have chosen this tune : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwYjcTiNry0

** crawls back hiding under a rock *** )

Hello all!

Yes Yamu, you are absolutely right!
Connie Francis was never sing this song.
And this one is cover version from the original 50's, "Van Buren" video song version produced by The Beautiful South -- Dream A Little Dream (Album is named "Closer", distributed in 2CDs, 2005)

Anyway, if this board allows me post here this song (not to broke any rules), i'm ready to bring you my small present... :)
