Wasteland 2 screenshot and tidbits

I wasn't really prepared to see NMA members demand washed out/brown graphics as RELAISTIC!!!111!!. The screenshot is fine, as is the saturation. A nice change from the OMGSOBLEAK colour palette and aesthetics prevailing in post-apoc games nowadays.
My thoughts exactly. The alpha screenshot looks pretty nice. Can't wait to see more.

I don't know what you people are on. My jaw dropped so hard that it hurt my nuts when I saw this screen. I honestly did not expect THAT. I thought it was going to look rugged as fuck, considering the budget and the timing.

And I also think that the desert looks like cheeto-land because they want to make it seem like the sun is scorching the shit out of the place. You know how the contrast is off the charts wherever you look, when you are at a beach? After they add the effects and tweak the lighting, it will probably all have that effect.

I think the reason wasteland 1 was so colorful was due to old hardware limitations. You can't do much with 16 colors now can you? I do think the saturation is too high, but besides that its good, especially for something released was it 90 days after the project began? ^^

Also I must admit to never having played wasteland 1 so I really cannot say what it's :"style" is. I'm 25 years old and I played a ton of amiga games, and wasteland 1 was never on the amiga, and likely even if I had wasteland 1 back then I would probably not even have been able to read english enough to understand the game to :"know" what was happening. Like I had pools of darkness and my big brother played it, but I didnt realise what the fuck was going on :D

The reason I backed wasteland 2 is because interplay made the best games ever back then, and getting interplay up and running again is one of the awesomest things that can ever happen. So I trust InXile to do a great job really. I dont think the screenshot says much at all about what kind of game wasteland 2 will be.

I know its not subject related but after reading Ulrox's post about old Interplay I suddenly wish that Inxile would make a Star Trek game again like 25th Anniversary and Judgment Rites.

Sadly that is unlikely to happen, some of the actors are dead now plus the license would be ridiculously expensive.

Sure, but stuff like armored bunnies, hillbillies attacking you, etc. was part of the setting, so I don't see a saturated art style as a big departure from the crazy setting of the series (can we even call it that when there was only one title, an unofficial sequel, and we're getting the real sequel like.. 20 years later?). I wouldn't really mind some slightly more subdued colors anyway, though this didn't really look cartoony to me.

Well I think the main thing is that there are so many fallout fans out there who has never played wasteland (myself included) who imagined fallout subconciously. It doesn't bother me much though because I have faith in fargo and his team. The things he has talked about in those interviews about the state of rpg's (vision document expanded on this) and how this will be an oldschool isometric rpg. That really is the most important aspect to me. Graphics and everything else is far from the most important aspect.

It is just very sad how newschool rpg's have devolved.

I can't remember if anyone asked here, but:

Yes, you can climb up ladders.

Yes, you can use cover.

And yes, the cartoony/plastic look will be less pronounced as work progresses.

Due to the amount of realistic grit and grey I am happy if this is the design direction they want to go in.

I love vibrant colours an I love it when games don't go for a hyper-realism look.
So this screenshot? I love it and I hope they keep the art design going in this direction.

I also don't see the problem with it being "cartoony" or having vibrant colour.

I have a problem with it being too "cartoony", but I'm sure it will look much better later on. If not I will still like it anyway.

It's not the colours that bothers me so much, more the scale, renderer, and shadows - but it's early days, so I don't expect the finished game to look 100% the same.

I sort of like the saturated colors, because to me they feel a lot like the original game. Wasteland was always kind of a semi-serious cartoon. Even if you set aside the original game's colour palette, which was sort of typical for the time, a lot of the character design/actual stuff in the game was pretty cartoony. I mean, giant robot scorpions on treads called Scorpitrons? That's kind of GI Joe. So is the exaggerated, ultra-violent combat text and some of the jokes in the character design.

I like it because it's got more realistic design sensibility than WoW, but it doesn't really look as washed out and grim as, say, Modern Warfare or STALKER. I think it strikes a good balance.

am I the only one who laughed out loud at the toy story shot somebody made on page2 ?

other than that, I like the screen and I hope the next one might take place in a greener environment (like the city that is shown on the wallpaper)
