We need a Sci-Fi Space RPG! Fantasy is saturated.

Fantasy and post-apoc got that wild western feel to it where anything goes so it limits things less. Cults, crazies, tribals, new weird factions and all kinds of shit can be done in them. It's not impossible for a sci-fi game set in space to have cults, it's just that you can't have as many as you could in a fantasy or post-apoc game. A cult once in a while is fine but it's a space setting for crying out loud. High-tech, loads of knowledge floating around, it'd take a damn good reason for people to suddenly turn into zealots for some make believe god.

So yeah, that's what I take from it. Post-apoc and fantasy is very wild western and has the deus ex machina of mutation/radiation/pre-apocalypse experiements and magic respectively. There's less limitations and you can do crazier things. It's also believable that there's enemies all around you. In a civilized setting it'd be difficult to sprinkle in combat without it feeling forced and out of place. Unless there's a war or something, but then things aren't exactly civilized anymore.

I don't think you're giving sci-fi games a far rap, sci-fi's can be just as weird and "out there" as any fantasy/Post-apoc setting. Cults and, tribals and, shit could come from uncivilised planets, the deus ex machinas can come from bullshit techno-babble plot devices and, combat can come from species that are naturally aggressive towards humans.

The only reason developers haven't spread out into Space is because it's by definition empty, with fantasy they have years of Tolkien to use as a base and, with post-apoc they have the real world to use as a base. Writers have to create new, original settings and characters for a sci-fi game and, artists aren't allowed to reuse assets as they're prone to doing in the more saturated settings (see a Kyros foot soldier and a Legionary Decanus as an example of reused assets); the only reason we don't see more sci-fi's is because they're difficult to make, not difficult to make entertaining.

I think what I tire of is the medevial Europeon style fanasty, now if those elemets were moved to another place say medevial islamic or Chinese society that would be enough to entice me back, less knights and castle and lords and more elements of non europeon cultures intergrated into traditional fantasy.

Even the setting for The Division would make for a good RPG.

Anything but more variations on Wizards, Mages, Dwarfs, Elves etc. would be nice. I like those RPGs but come on - it's time for something else. Until then I'm only getting space RPGs from Mass Effect Andromeda, which I am 99% sure is not going to be an RPG despite everyone's wishes.

Wish Starbound was RPG-focused too :( And the main "storyline" is getting included soon <3

I am also open for Weird Western RPGs, modern day ones with horror elements (I really want a Hellboy/BPRD RPG), or a time travel one.
It might also be interesting to see an RPG in which the player travels to worlds depicted in surreal paintings, having to interact with the weird denizens inhabiting it, where traditional human reason and logic goes on vacation)

As for space sci fi RPGs, I want a hard RPG based on concepts like transhumanism resulting in various types of humans. Interstellar travel exists but it is slower than light (so no easy journeys between star systems), artificial intelligence exists, and implants that allow wireless communication and computer interfacing, but no such stuff as telepathy and ESP. Also no humanoid aliens, only starfish ones (if there are aliens in it). If it even remotely human like it is the result of human genetic engineering.

That's what I like about Jade Empire, the Asian style felt really fresh.

Isn't Cyberpunk supposed to be a Sci-Fi RPG? I don't really know much about that game.

Regardless I must agree, fantasy is pretty overdone. I was disappointed when I saw Tyranny is set in another medieval setting. They've said though that's it's in a time that hasn't really been done before: The transition between the bronze age and the iron age, so not necessarily medieval. Still though, I want something not set in the far past. I'm still gonna get Tyranny anyway though, past setting or not.

Everything about Jade Empire was awesome (minus that vertical shooting mini-game). A shame that bioware never made a sequel.
Considering the mediocrity Bioware has been putting out recently, I'm glad they're leaving Jade Empire alone, I wouldn't mind a remaster though.

Cyberpunk is a pretty sweet Sci-fi P&P RPG and, if all goes well 2077 well set off a Sci-fi RPG trend, then we'll be calling for the return of fantasy RPG's.

Bioware just needs to stop putting offline mmo mechanics in their games.
More like: EVERYONE needs to stop putting MMO mechanics in their games. If there is one genre of games that I can point to and say "that is the thing that is ruining gaming" it is the MMO or MMORPG.

And it's not just the mechanics, it's the fact that developers are pushing these games instead of actual games - Instead of KOTOR 3, we get an MMO (Star Wars: The Old Republic). Instead of a new S.T.A.L.K.E.R. game, we get an MMO (Survarium). Even Fallout was getting pushed towards an MMO at some point, and judging by Fallout 4 I'd say they just took all the repetitive quest ideas from that.

I actually enjoyed swtor, but eventually stoped playing because of the experience penalty for free users(free to play my ass).
Then there was the shadow of revan plot. Thanks for making the two previous kotor´s irrelevant bioware!

And I'd say post-apoc is starting to get a bit generic as well. I love me some post-apoc, but from what I can tell new games these days are either fantasy or post-apoc/dystopian.
That's why I'm really interested in Cyberpunk 2077. I'm curious to see, if CD Project manages to deliver outside of the Witcher universe.

Honestly, I'm pretty surprised no one's really done much with the 40k franchise as far as RPGs go. Plenty of space combat, RTS, MMO, and other similar things, but I can't think of any CRPG or ARPG types really... at least, not that don't utterly suck. And that universe is ripe for the taking for an expansive CRPG set across multiple worlds and featuring Orks, Eldar, Tau, Necron, Chaos, and pretty much everything else.

Though with one major caveat: OLD 40k, not the new rulesets I've been hearing about that indicate GW reset the whole damn universe to zero and started fresh, losing basically everything that made it great.

The w40k universe, with its over the top violence has a lot of potencial the shooter genre. Sure, you could make an rpg but for a game company it would be easier to make a cliche shooter and still be a decent w40k game.
There were some games with rpg elements like dawn of war 2 and its expansions (which I love, especially retribution).
