We need a Sci-Fi Space RPG! Fantasy is saturated.

There's basically an infinite resource of great RPG concepts in classical literature and mythology that'll never be touched because weirdos like us are the only ones that are interested in it :|. There's always indies I guess.

I'm sick of fantasy but something based off the Odyssey, I like the idea of having Giants, cyclops, etc in a game. I know it sounds silly, on the other hand I'm looking forward to the isometric lovecraft game I've been checking out news on from the Codex.

Yeah the world of Greek mythology would be an awesome setting for a cRPG. So much variety in characters, locations and monsters.

Sending Perseus off to kill Medusa as a wedding present is the equivalent of the Brotherhood of Steel sending you off to the Glow to collect tech.

So many settings, both mythology and science fiction ones that go completely underused because RPG developers tend to focus on standard fantasy fare.
I am so sick that imagination always has to be lowered to the most common audience member instead of making them have to increase their knowledge in order to fully understand the settings.

Greek Mythology, Roman Mythology, Egyptian Mythology, the Mythologies from Indian, China, Korea, Japan, and so many others that are in general ignored. Only the occasional rare game here in the West and probably local games developed in Asia that will never come over here because of the language barrier and the culture differences.

Pretty much. I'll be using a bunch of mythological locations and similar things in a novel (possibly even a series if it goes well enough) I'm hoping to start writing this year once I've got the first five parts of an unrelated novella serial done. While some of them will be standard fare (Atlantis or the like), I'm also looking for lesser-known myths and entities I can make use of in interesting ways.

Kind of derailled the thread a little. It's infuriating how little RPG stuff there is outside of fantasy.

I'm all for sci-fi but I'd prefer it if it wasn't generic sci-fi, you know? You'd quickly just have the same problem we have now with fantasy.

In my case it'll be a hybrid work of fantasy and sci-fi, drawing from mythology but also utilising my own ideas extensively. Alas, I'm not a game developer and never will be, so I'm afraid I can't help much there :)

Interesting, an spanish writer has a good saga mixing fantasy and gods that end up being superdeveloped ancient humans. I would recommed you trying Unreal, its new visual scripting system helps non developers to create games. Of course, it will take some time and study to build a really interesting prototype.

Actually, the relation between you or the characters with the gods could be the ultimate faction system. Take Ullyses and his story, think of it as a videogame with choices and consequences and you pretty much got it. Help them take revenge on each other, follow their cult or challenging them, etc.

Yeah, indeed not more Star Trek or Star Wars esque sci fi. The whole galactic governments and space empires stuff can only be used so many times, as do ancient enemies though to have been defeated but that return to bring disaster to galactic civilization.

And while I like cyberpunk settings such as Deus Ex there are also other punk settings worth looking into. (yeah I know about the Dieselpunk one set onboard a colony space ship)

I would murder somebody right now if it meant I got a Sci Fi game in the style of Dark Souls.

I imagine it being SOMA mixed with Dark Souls.

JEEBUS CHRIST GOOOEY BASTARDS EVERYWHERE
Well, with BloodBorne the horrors/abominations/beasts/ugly motherfuckers there were already otherworldly, so i have a good feling about this, designwise at least.

Didn't Bethesda publish a Cthulhu game at some point? Was that an RPG?

A FPS it seems.

Thinking of Bloodborne, any decent Lovecraftian RPG's out there?

You may want to give The Consuming Shadow a shot, since it's one of those few Lovecraft game faithful enough to it's source material and it do have some RPG element, stuff like choices and different ending.
