What is it with Bethesda and nonsensical settlements?

Call me an idiot if you like, because I am, but while I enjoyed Dragon Age: Origins' writing I always sucked at the game. Uh, it never occured to me to play it like a real-time-with-pause game fully zoomed out, akin to how Baldur's Gate is played. Come to think of it, I failed to realise the same for Neverwinter Nights 2 too. I just played it completely real time without tactics like how an MMO would be played, no wonder it was difficult.

I'm probably going to have to go back and try my hand at DA:O again sometimes.
 
I mean you don't have to show the civil war and battles to give the player a feeling of being there.
You don't have to do that if you are a good writer and good at making people immersed in the characters and story, and have a good understanding of subtlety and that a whisper can be louder than a shout when it comes to art and storytelling. But Bethesda is the exact antithesis of this.

Asking AAA games for subtlety is now like asking a monkey for Shakespeare. The last AAA game with any degree of subtlety in its storytelling was Alien: Isolation. Bethesda games are now made by casuals, and they're made for casuals.

Fallout has been reduced to the level of a Michael Bay movie, and subtlety and coherency of writing isn't a feature of those.

I liked the civil war idea... except I didn't like how they handled it. For one it was particularly boring, both sides were similar and the writing dismal. I would have loved the ability to become a general leading my men with strategy and tactics, spy who dined with high society in an attempt to find out secrets or mage who unearthed ancient artifacts in a race of magical power.

The civil war was gutted before release, there's a mod that restores a lot, like the ability to actually lose battles and it's by the same guy that does dragon combat overhaul.
 
Yeah, I tried both, and while they are neat, it just shows how bad the game actually is. Both mods are just like tries to repair a broken mirror or bottle.
Particularly this civil war overhaul mod always broke my game. Always. Fresh install, new game, old save files didn't matter what I tried. I always had situations where it broke quests, so much that I could not even advance with the console. It simply shows how shitty Beth is with their coding and scripting - I mean I don't even blame it all on the modder, it does apparantly work for some. However, even this mod could not change the shitty writing of the game or hide the fact that the game was simply not made for this super-massive-dragon-origins type of battles. Even in civil war overhaul you never see more than 10 or 20 NPCs on your screen. For obvious reasons.

Maybe, if they achieved something like this

But that's just a pipe dream. Bethesdas engine can't even work properly with the low numbers of NPCs you have right now. It would melt 90% of the PCs out there if they even tried to get it to behave like in that video. And I feel this has less to do with the hardware, but more with how badly optimised the engine actually is. And that after Beth has 15 years of experience in programming ...

It's too bad that dude's channel is dedicated to nothing but FO4 now, he had some funny retro rage and Mass Effect videos.
