I don't console so I have little experience with achievements. But from what I've seen, I get their draw, and think that since they're so effective in expanding the life-span of a game; why not? People seem to enjoy them.
The only times I ever got in touch with achievements was with the only time I used GFwL (GTA IV, obligatory), which I ignored when every now and again it *dinged* and gave me an achievement like one-man army (survive 5 minutes at max wanted rating).
It's really a bit of design often enough. Like with Steam achs: Zeno Clash and World of Goo have terrible, stupid grinding achs. But some games, like Plants vs Zombies and HL2:Ep2, combine achs you get during normal gameplay well with fun little side-challenges. Like beating Dog in a footrace, or schooling the attack chopper.
