Which games do you think could be made into good movies?

Question

First time out of the vault
Well see above.

It seems people just grab games to bank on the brand name and screw the story.People want it to soemhow RELATE to the damn game.Best scenario?Sequel/prequel/alternative WHAT IF.

Would the tomb raider movies be this popular if it was,you know, totally unrelated to the game itself? As in lara craft doesnt ACTUALLY try and find mythological relics of powers and keep them out of the hands of the wrong people.Instead its about ermmm this chick just breaking into an old tomb to steal treasure or something.

I am of course, referring to doom, the movie.Or rather the movie that is for some completely unkown reason using the doom brand name.

The only thing related to the game is,there will be this group of guys. With guns. There will be lots of enemies.And...thats it?

I think quite a few people couldnt believe this monstrosity was allowed to go ANYWHERE near reality.I cant believe ID didnt take one look at the script, laugh like hell and rip it up while throwing it in the writer's face.

With that in mind,i would like to present some interesting ideas for movies based off games :

Plane scape : torment. The game is a goddamn STORY by itself. You can just take the main plot, the main characters and it makes a script. If they actually follow the plot closely that actually solves number 1 hollywood movie problem : the plot either sucks or makes entirely no sense whatsoever.

Starting scence : TNO(the nameless one) waking up in the mortuary.Morty(if thats the correct name) off screen suddenly starts talking to TNO.TNO turns(camera following) and morty explains the situation to TNO and the audience.Follow game plot all the way to meeting main characters like anna, ignus and that floating suit of armor, including the jokes, the humourous banter, the witty remarks.

The only major decision would be whether TNO is good, neutral or evil in the movie, and what parts to cut(particularly which NPC to cut....i would think anna and grace is in for the whole ravel thing and the "love triangle"(just like in the game,it will be kept light) ,ignus because hes related to TNO,the floating armor because hes also related to TNO,morty and the githzerai.Hell pretty much everyone now that you mention it.

Ending could be problematic,it would be a bit hard to explain why TNO is suddenly on a battlefield.......

Blood series.Think kill bill, with lots of guns, and either undead or alien creatures depending on which game its based on.If its based on the 2nd one,by god they better not gloss over the roles of the chosen like they did in the game.

Problem : violence level of course. How to keep it gory enough for the fans and for normal people.

Outpost 2 : Hmm this will be mostly based on the background plot written by that sci-fic author whats his name i imagine. Wont be much on action, mostly sci-fic thriller and suspense i imagine.Depends largely whether this is baesd on plymouth or eden story.I think the plymouth story is better.......the whole savant thing, coupled with the perfect ending,is a contrast to the eden one.

The ideas were mostly based on how good the game story is(important),both on how good it actually is and how good it could be if expanded on.Blood 2 for instance had the material, but was never fully utilized. This will allow fans to link the movie to the game they love, and the writers wont have to make much changes in an EFFORT not to make the plot suck.

I'm not sure I would want a movie made after Planescape: Torment, or any other RPG for that matter. Those games are simply too huge to be translated into movie form without leaving out many significant parts. The end result would be overly butchered to sit well with true fans.

What would rock, however, is a movie set in Planescape universe. It would have a plot of its own, with no ties to Torment but a recurring character here and there. And big boobs. Must not leave out big boobs.

How about: SOLITAIRE: TEH MOVIE
Now that would be a kick ass flick

As would TETRIS: THE MOVIE and PONG: THE MOVIE and FREECELL: THE MOVIE and ...

I think they should make a movie after the PREDATOR games, though. That would rock.

how bout frogger the movie?

but i think planescpe torment would be better as an anime though if they did it wrong it would ruin the game

"CS Teh movie"....
Here is a good game & Movie adaption IMHO.
Dune ( Both the mini-series and to a degree the Lynch Movie) and the good old Dune 1 game from 1992..... :D

You... know Dune is a novel by Frank Herbert, right?

><
I can't believe you just said that, Nocturne...

Half-Life. It's an obvious 'Why' but there would have to be more dialogue because Gordan never says a damn thing...

"Dune" is a great subject for this.

The fact of the matter is any great game could only be a movie if the plot followed the story...as Ratty summed it up "You'd have to cut out too much" and that is too true.

However Dune the miniseries is grand in this sense. It follows the story completely and misses nothing though its still something tangible you can see on TV.

I believe a show is too long for most stories where a movie is too short. A mini-series of 5-10 1 hour episodes would fit perfectly.

I would like to bring up "The Dark Tower: The Gunslinger". Not only, because I am reading the DT series, but as I was done with the first I immediately thought "That would make a great movie, but they would never do it right." Then I realised that the first book is only about 200 pages. If the LotR's can be 350 page books in three hour movies skipping only a few things then a 200 page book could skip very little and be 2 hours long...or 3 hours long and include EVERYthing in the book. Plus all the action would appeal to mainstream viewers other than the real fans. The action could be enough to make commercials for it and make people think its not only an action movie, but a western when its actually science-fiction. :P

That'd teach 'em...

Sincerely,
The Vault Dweller

N/A.

I will stand by this assertion until there are a comparable number of positive game->film conversions as there are negative ones.

More or less the same goes for books, although they have a slightly higher chance of success.
As for the DT series, that was messed up when he decided that he was going to continue writing it.

I can imagine any of the Thief games being made into a good movie. Considering how awful it would probably end up being it's probably better left in my imagination though.

Offcource :)
Read them all... :D
But anyways, both the game and movie were great though.... How often does that happen ?

I heard something about this a while ago, but Max Payne might make a pretty decent movie if directed well. Decent plot, awesome noir style, and an absolute shitload of people getting shot. Could be good, I guess. Could also be complete crap.

Other suggestions that I haven't really thought through, the Crusader games, the Broken Sword games, and the Syndicate games seem to have concepts that would work pretty well in a movie. But I'm also aware that despite how awesome they were as a game, Hollywood is still completely capable of raping the shit out of them in movie form.

I honestly can't think of many, because they are usually made into crap designed for the common consumer cattle, and either in cheesy horror or sci-fi, they are always made into an action flick. Uwe Boll seems to be the largest criminal of this kind, and even he can fail to put a story into action.

I would agree that PS:T would do well, ONLY IF Jeunet and Caro wrote and directed it. It would take a few years, but they could capture the feel of the setting, the uniqueness of the characters, and the depth of interaction between them as well.

I could imagine a good movie loosely based off Grim Fandango. The visual style would especially lend itself well, in the right hands. Though adventure games, with their linear structure (and, in the better ones, good stories and characterization); are a bit more suited for such a conversion than other genres.

Now that's an idea! Never thought about it though... It would be nice to see it... :D
Ever thought about making Max Payne - The Movie? Or Hal-Life?
Or even Arcanum (just for fun  )...

I too believe a Planescape-set movie would be most interesting. I think that live action would be the way to go though, since if done right it would need to be as much about the people as the setting, and people do people best, not computers. 'Course they'd have to include Morte in there somehow, prefereably engaging in necrophilia.

see Sin City.

With over the top action movies like xXx it would be easy to make a good Duke Nukem movie. That way, if it was duke nukem, i wouldnt mind the excessive explosions and corny zingers, in fact they would fit in perfectly.
