World Cup 2010 South Africa

Chile - Spain is surely going to be very entertaining today. It's going to be a deadly war, Spain can't be left out! A lot of people was putting their hopes on them!

Well Chile is through anyways - but I think they outclassed Spain in both attack and defense. Too bad about the shit referee'ing. Although I guess it serves as poetic justice for Vidal taking that dive and getting that Swiss player red carded.

I don't know if anyone was paying attention to Switzerland and Honduras but both sides sucked something fierce. As expected the Swiss had no offence and if Honduras got the ball they couldn't pass or finish. Seriously - FIFA was thinking of taking a berth off from South America and giving it to Africa - they should definitely take it away from from CONCACAF. Fucking horrendous match.

The first spain goal was quite... unexpected. Chile lost a bit of their panache after it.

Glad they're not out yet, because I like their style.

Uruguay’s attempt at slowing the game down after half time almost blew up in their faces…I’m glad Korea scored, they deserved their goal, it’s a shame they couldn't keep the pressure up…and the 2nd Uruguay goal was great. I wouldn’t mind if they made the finals, but I don’t think they have the capability to win this tournament.

I feel kinda sad for the U.S loosing, they played real nice and still had that old football feeling before everything became corrupted by FIFA.

Nice for Ghana though, not having an African nation in the finals would be kinda weird.

Not liking the Germany vs England match though. Tends to bring out the worst in the English.

Hey England, remember Wembley? Yeah that's right, go fuck yourself

Although I would call this a clear goal... oh well.

Well, that's a deserved win by Germany. England's defending was so so so weak, and in that sense it's a shame that that goal was disallowed as that talk will almost overshadow the incompetence of England. This was especially bad in the first half hour, where Ozil and Muller just kept running in between the lines and getting men behind the England defense in the simplest situations. Just horrible, horrible defending.

England seemed to get back in the game with their goal and then really putting a lot of pressure on the Germans in the second half, but they kept giving up space between defense and midfield and Germany kept abusing that, though Germany wasn't nearly as succesful as they were in the first half.
And then the second half goals, both of which came from really quick counter-attacks caused by England getting about 8 players in the box but then just wasting possession and then being so childishly outplayed on the counter-attack.

Germany was good, especially in exploiting the space the English gave them, but we still don't know whether their good play is a consequence of poor opposition play (like against Australia) or because of their own strength.

Another thing that really showed was the lack of English team play on offense, just so many instances of poor communication and poor passes, no off-the-ball runs creating space, crowding around eachother. Just some bad football altogether.

And the German goalkeeper is looking pretty uncertain and flustered at times. Probably the weakest link on their squad, along with Mertesacker.

That a polite way of saying that they kept passing to empty areas of the field?

I'm not so sure that phantom goal will overshadow the crepe play by the English. Maybe in some of the gutter papers but it's pretty doubtfull that England would play any better with that goal.

Only mistake I saw was 2:1 situation, aside from that I'd say splendid
His line-keeping was good, but he looked poor every time a cross was swung into the box. He looked late and uncertain in trying to get to the ball, and he didn't get it consistently either. The 2:1 was the most obvious situation where he did poorly, but it certainly wasn't the only one.

Actually the exact opposite. The thing you need to do on offense is find those empty areas of the field and get a man in there, but they all crowded to the central area where it's just too easy for a German defender to get a foot in and get a break on the ball. And then add to that that Rooney especially just didn't find his teammates, he kept trying to find a man who would run onto the ball into empty space, but no one did.

This is one of the matches I ask myself when FIFA will set up an extra video-referee, like ice hockey has. Till then it's quite hard to take the results seriously, 'cause this is fucking medieval. One plainly stupid moment just killed all the show.

Tell that to Jesterka here:

This is nonsense. Yes, that's a horrible moment and that's a great reason to have video replay available to referees, but it hardly decided the match. Germany just outclassed England the entire match, and even with that disallowed goal Germany deservedly went through.

Sure, England obviously didn't rule on the field, but I wasn't commenting their qualities at all. I just sense such mistakes pretty fucking disastrous in the World Cup scene. I'm pretty much used to refereeing accuracy and justice from ice hockey matches, while this was such a clownery.

It looks like Henry's "God's Hand MK II." incident wasn't scandalous enough to set up the video. Today's shit will certainly be forgotten as well, because hey, the score was 4:1 anyways!

Sure, it's bullshit that there are no technological aids. I just don't like when that discussion, which comes up every week or so anyway, overshadows the football itself. Especially not when people make unfounded statements that it decided the game, when it did not.
