X-Com being made into an FPS (Again?)

Another beloved franchise of mine is going to get destroyed in the name of "imershun."

And another one that was isometric with turn based battles.

Truth to be told I think that only the first game was really great.

Technically that was a third person shooter, and one I had chosen to pretend never existed.

I thought you could switch to a first person view but I found out I was thinking of another (and canned) X-Com FPS.

A Jagged Alliance fps anyone ?
Actually, I believe the JA3 that was announced recently is going to have turn-based combat. Whether it will be good or not is another question, but at least it's not a FPS.

A lot of Hollywood types jumped into the gaming genre, claiming it's not much different than producing a movie. And what's been done a lot in the movie industry these days?
Shooters are becoming more like movies and movies are becoming more like shooters. Because everyone loves shooters!

Honestly, I don't care whether people want to play 3D action games or shooters or whatever, but I have a big problem with mutilating great old franchises.

Sometimes i wonder... what the fuck is so difficult about making up some own setting for a shooter? Do they really have to buy up a franchise? Is it sadism? Envy? Do they really hope that some old x-com fan would buy a crappy shooter because it got x-com on the box?

Why not call it… the landing? Another Invasion? Something like that and be done with it? Has nobody told them that even with a "Porsche" sticker a fiat is still a fiat?

I think that they hope to play to the nostalgia of existing X-com fans, and bring in the Xbawks types with "immershun" and "moar graphix." Once you pay for the game, they don't give a shit if you like it or not... they have your $$ and that's all they care about.

I think you're right about this, but it's funny...it really doesn't make that much sense. If you're nostalgic about something you're hardly going to be enthusiastic about a "new and improved" version that destroys everything that mattered about the original. I guess they can dupe enough people into giving it a chance to make it profitable.

I couldn't agree more... sadly the video game purchasing public tends to be a fairly unintelligent group, and snubs like this are quickly forgotten... down the road 2k will release another game, and people will buy that too, meaning that they can do more or less what they want, as they'll always make money.

Still, fighting aliens armed with plasma rifles with nothing more than a grease gun and a sharp suit is kinda cool.
Still not very X-Com though.

I wonder what older franchise is next on the FPS Remake/Sequel list

Not being remade as a FPS but I keep hearing about EA wanting to revive Ultima in some way.

Planescape Torment. Or ARCANUM! And there is of course Jagged Alliance. They might also use Monkey Island. Who knows what is next.

Hell there are still a ton of games that can be bastardised I mean "modernised" in to a mindless fuck shooters with epic lulzines :D

Isn't it more of a spinoff game than a remake or a sequel though? I remember reading somewhere that they were/will be making a proper XCOM game as well and this is more like a Starcraft Ghost type project. I have to say that it looks pretty freaking unappealing though.
