What would you fine people think of a Fallout set in Germany?

Shaodeus

Still Mildly Glowing
I personally would like to see a Fallout set in Berlin, lots of history to the place, lots of extremist ideologies you can play with and you would just have room to do something extremely new with the Fallout franchise without pissing all over the cool stuff in the American west coast.

What do you guys think?

Fallout is integrally American, to remove that essential part of the formula from the game would be ridiculous.
Also, I don't know anything about modern day Germany, so what extremist ideologies? Are you talking about their past spats with Nazism and Communism or, are they into weird political shit right now?

Multiculturalism is the hot topic in Germany right now, though I'd doubt that there would be much of a problem with that in Germany during the Fallout timeline.

With hot blooded politics I mean things like anarchism, communism, national socialism, the berlin wall. I personally always thought that Berlin would be perfect for a Fallout game

Still, what makes America such a essential part of the Fallout formula?

My understanding of Fallout games is:

Fallout is mostly about the 50's "american dream", the "americana", the 50's USA sci-fi scene, the USA patriotism on the great wars and also about the fear of the cold war.

I am not american so I might be wrong there though, but I believe that is what @Izak means with the "Fallout is integrally American"

I never really got that myself. The original games had barely any mention of America besides the Enclave, there were very few cities that kept their original names, there were only barebone cultural ties... All we had were somewhat retrofuturistic ruins that had a typically american Streamline Modern look to it. To me, it never felt "integrally american", although many people seem to think so.
Personally, I think Fallout can work in Germany or Russia or wherever, although it would look and feel a bit differently of course. Many very iconic visuals would be rather different, but I never felt that they were so incredibly important to the game, anyway. You can capture the World of Tomorrow SCIENCE! look anywhere, and I think it would be very interesting to see how for example the old Jugendstil buildings in Berlin would have developed until 2077.
For example, the Kaufhaus des Westens, a huge shopping center from 1907 that, if it would survive the nukes, would make for a very interesting location and center of power. And it looks fantastic.

Also, Flaktürme.

.
Exactly, you could have a lot of awesome ruined German buildings, German 50s sci-fi tech, German 50s music, the awesome German language, Stielhandgranate. Plenty of alternative history opportunities with the historical significance of Berlin during the cold war (would the wall have fallen, wouldn't have fallen, were the soviets kicked out of the country by force or?)

remember, the atomic punk technology is only exist in Realm of USA. that's why the reason europe in fallout already in crap condition even before the great war start. so any game set outside of america will pretty much like mad max or metro clone

I wouldn't say so, many energy weapons in Fallout are actually developed by Heckler and Koch, so I don't think that Germany was a impoverished shithole during 2060 anymore then that America was

The USSR was still around by the time the nukes started flying, so Germany was probably still partitioned.

Maybe they got kicked out at the beginning of the 21st century by the European commonwealth, then the world enjoyed about 30 golden years of mass consumption until the resources ran out in 2050s or so and everyone would start hating the European Commonwealth even more then people hate the European Union and then Germany would go back into a nationalist state like Imperial Germany, have a war with France over the Ruhrgebied and a war with Russia over Poland until everyone started bombing the shit out of each other

A partitioned Berlin would in fact make for a decent premise. Better than a united one if you ask me.

The fate of Europe in Fallout would be a pretty interesting setting to explore. Would need some damn good writing behind the backstory though.

It's not about names of cities. It's all about american culture, american legacy and american way of living. For Example. If you make Fallout in USSR you'll get S.T.A.L.K.E.R.+Metro 2033 at very best or a poor retexture at worst and hateful sights from russians because it's not how they live and deal with consequences of devastating war.

Shady Sands is reflective of the American legacy? The Master's army? The Rome-inspired Legion? What's refreshing about Fallout is that these countries literally died when the bombs fell. Besides, the USA in 2077 is so different to how it is today what "way of living" are we talking about here?

But where is that in Fallout? Where is that "american culture", when barely anyone even knows what the country was called along time ago? What american legacy? Even a large portion of the names of the people around aren't exactly american. American way of living? What's so specific american about how they live?
My point is that especially in Fallout 1 America is all but dead, and nobody actually remembers a thing. There's a distant memory of America reflected in the language and basic mannerisms, but if anything, the people are generically western world at best.
Fallout 2 added a lot more nods to the past with its rediscovery of civilisation, though, but nothing about the core of Fallout really strikes me as quintessentially american.

Doesn't have to be. If we assume that Gorbatchev was also present in the Fallout time line, it might have still seen a unified Germany. I would say it probably was even a very likely event.

The closest societies we have akin to "America" are the NCR and New Vegas. And both of them really aren't that similar when you think about it. Yeah, House is from the Old World, but that's the problem. He rebuilds Vegas like a child's modelling kit. A snowglobe controlled by a megalomaniacal autocrat, forever trapped within America's "legacy" as House understands it.

Then there's the NCR, an expansionist wannabe democracy failing to emulate the USA because it lacks both the resources and the manpower to protect its own citizens and actually control the land it claims to own.

Well, it's everywhere even in small details. From specific american 50s vibe (German's or USSR's 50s dreams were different) and NCR trying to restore american democratic and already have big business sharks in a post-war world to small details like tombstones in Den with quotes and that STOP signs no one ever cared about. Never questoned why it's gunshot?

Well, someone might think it's stupid (mostly for Bethtards who's too busy right now modifying laser musket and replicating jet with raidershit and antiseptic), but brahmins are big business in Fallout. And NCR full of brahmin magnats.
manpower to protect its own citizens and actually control the land it claims to own.
It doesn't cancel anything. It just shows that NCR making same mistakes that might hurt even more.

I recall the Head-Ranger guy talks about how Lake Mead is one of the few natural lakes he's ever seen. The ones in California have been drained dry. Having tonnes of brahmin means squat when you're experiencing a good ol' dust bowl. There's a lot to be said for the NCR collapsing in on itself.
