Alpha Protocol

There, second playthrough done. It was refreshing to be an ass to pretty much everyone after playing a sneak-and-please kind of guy the first playthrough. Mina's dialogue at the end when she was at -10 (Hatred) was hilarious. Fuck you too.

Time to pen a review. I enjoyed the shit out of this game but man, what a technical mess. The list of bugs, glitches and errors I encountered would make a book, and that's just on two playthroughs.

My favourites
[spoiler:01d9ce66ee]One that amused me every time is that sometimes, when you wind forward in dialogue, it'd play both the dialogue you skipped and the following lines simultaneously. And try to show the subtitles for both. Hilarity ensues.

Also Frith a lot of bosses just broke down. It's like they saw how awesome I am and just gave up. Last playthrough, nancy lil Clancy just stood next to his machinegun while I kept putting bullets in his head. Fight was over in five seconds. It also helps how enemy soldiers keep turning to shoot at each other or throw grenades at their own feet for no discernible reason.

But it's the obvious conflicts of choices that get me. They're expected and the game avoids them for the most part, but when you do get them, they're awetards. For instance, second playthrough I figured fuck it, side with Leland, hoping it'd change the ending area (it didn't, not really), but then I talked to Parker and convinced him the plan is dumb (why was that dialogue still a mission node, didn't I just side with Leland? Even given you can betray him later, that's a bit silly). So when I hit the Parker boss battle, Leland went on my comm whining about how Parker had turned on them and I needed to stop him, yet my mission was to "protect Parker", which I did (fight's the same regardless, other than turrets), and then used the computer to gather the info, making all fine, so I have no idea what Leland was nagging about.[/spoiler:01d9ce66ee]

As for the earlier ending stories

[spoiler:01d9ce66ee]First playthrough: let everyone live, tho I arrested both Nasri and - in the end - Westridge. And Brayko I guess.

Sexed up Madison, Mina and Scarlet (why not?). Stuck with G22 all the way, fuck SIE and her the oldie combat initiative.

Albatross was my handler, didn't talk to Parker, instead passing on data to Omen Deng. Didn't see Scarlet anywhere, but saved Mina.

Shot up the place in amusingly easy fights for a stealth character (just keep chainshotting bosses in the head, and keep one soldier alive so they don't send in a new batch, haw, what a noob design mistake). Shot Leland in the face. Went into the sunset with Mina.

Second playthrough: executed pretty much everyone, at least Shaheed, Brayko, Sis, Omen Deng and Westridge. Let Nasri live tho.

Saved Madison but she buggered off, I was kind of hoping to discover she was Parker's daughter but never did. Got along much better with Heck in this playthrough, and sided with SIE and the VCI instead of G22. The change in tactics to Brayko's mansion, bashing in through the front gate instead of sneaking in, is funny.

SIE was my handler and raped me in what I find to be a pretty disturbing, creepy scene. Even tho' Conrad despised me this playthrough I still got him out of the way by fast-talking on his dossier. Mina loathed me at the end, and after siding with Leland I paid her snobbery back with a bullet through the head. Got Parker on my side, executed Darcy and Westridge.Opted not to betray Leland in the end and we walked off as business partner, tho the game did another one of those "is he drawing a gun?!" fake-outs. But it was only a cigar! Phew

I never did figure out the nature of Sis. And what about Championchik, in what scenario do you actually see him more than once?[/spoiler:01d9ce66ee]

[spoiler:4549c8ded2]I met him as a boss when confronting Surkov after I found out the truth about him. boxing champion or not, 5 chain shots to the head and you're dead.[/spoiler:4549c8ded2]

On a more intresting (for me) note, I got roughly 30 points more on the shooting training course as Recruit than I did in my first playboy playthrough, with lower weaponskills than before.

Could it be the previous savefiles messing with your playthrough?
As far as I could tell, just ignoring the timer gets you most points.

Just shoot criticals exclusively with AR & pistol. It gives MASSIVE points if you take your time and score aimed head shot criticals.

Kinda retarded for a timed range run... You'd expect it to be about speed & killing everyone. Who cares as long as they're dead & it's quick. But no, taking your time scoring crits is the way to go.

You can fairly easily get 225+ points, whereas 100+ already gives you the "god you're teh bestest" dialogue, I think.

It felt a bit harder for me, yes. But I can't say for sure.

It felt way easier to me, because you're drowned with APs and goodies. Rookie felt noticeably harder, even the minigames seemed harder. Vet? Not so much, but I haven't played far into it.

The beginning is way easier as a vet because of the ton of skillpoints. After the second location (that is after saudi and moscow in my case) it seems a bit harder. I got the feeling that the enemies are able to soak more damage somehow. But perhaps its just lack of intel on them or something else.

The minigames get harder again i noticed. Only 5 digit numbers, 10 seconds and resetting after what feels like 3 seconds. Think i will have to wear those matrix-gloves.

As vet you dont have to choose what way you want to take in braykos house, you can do both. Guess its the same with rome.

I re-installed the game and it seems to have helped with the reloading issues. so now I'm back on my second playthrough. but... I'm stuck at Brayko. like I said before, last time the fight barely got started before he was dead (thanks to chain shot). this time I just can't take him down. I start out with a flashbang and place some bullets in his head with the assault rifle. this is enough to make him move to the second phase. if I'm lucky, I can survive his knife attacks long enough for his henchmen to arrive. this buys me some time, but only until he takes out his knives again. I've tried flashbangs and critical shots with the shotgun, but when he comes at me it seems like nothing can stop him. and I have no chance of running away.

Had the same problem on my first playthrough, I used up alot of explosives and planned an "escape route" for when he charged me where I placed the explosives and then led him through those spots.

That and plentiful of use with sprint.

PROTIPS:

1) When Brayko is coked up, run away, sprint up to the stage, wait for him to reach the top of the stairs then jump down.

2) Repeat until Brayko gets tired

3) Rape Brayko with point-blank gunfire while he is tired

4) ????

5) Profit.

You might get knifed once or twice while you get the hang of it, but once you learn his intricacies, it isn't hard to take him down quickly.

Chain Shot and Room Sweep help too, especially if you Chain Shot with Steel Core or Room Sweep with Phosphorous.

If you really, really can't beat him, go back to the safehouse and do Taipei first.

[spoiler:570825c316]Get Heck on your side, get him to lace the coke. Apparently it's slightly bugged, but if it works correctly he should bleed health after snorting coke and become significantly easier.[/spoiler:570825c316]

Maybe I should try that as well. I'll do it this weekend. See if it resolves any of my other issues.

the bug with enemies disappearing did happen again after the re-install, but before it happened every single time. so it's definitely an improvement.

it actually started happening all the time after I did the changed in the .ini files recommended to get rid of the mouse lag. can't really remember what changes I made but it'd be strange if this was the reason. on the other hand, it might be a bug related to loading textures, and I'm pretty sure one of the settings was related to that as well. it didn't help me though, so I'm not messing around with that again. I also noticed a huge difference in mouse lag during minigames (some setting I changed made the mouse lag much more than before).

This game so needs to be patched up the wazoo, but I think we'll be lucky if it gets some basic patching. There's reasons to doubt even that, and everyone knows it'll never get the polish it should.

I'm not too sure, NWN2 got a lot of attention after release. it was helluva buggy mess when released and now it runs a lot smoother. it took its sweet time, though.

Sadly I think you are correct on that, but there's nothin' bad about hoping and pleading.

I've done a whole bunch of new changes to the .ini files now, going to see if it'll do any good.

I'm not speaking in generalisms, I'm speaking in this specific case. Obsidian and SEGA are done with each other. They were done even before this game was released. SEGA is not going to support DLCs, that's a guarantee. Will they do patches? I assume so, but more in the way of one or two courtesy patches than long-term support. Obsidian can't afford to patch this game on their own time, so that'll be it.
