Alpha Protocol

Their parting ways is fairly common knowledge, but I don't think ever publicly discussed. But anyone can figure it out anyway from the way the development went, cancellation of Aliens and lack of any comment so far on DLC, sequelization or patching.

Maybe some of the code will be released to the public to allow fan-made patches?

One can dream...

I'm not too sure, NWN2 got a lot of attention after release.

I'm not speaking in generalisms, I'm speaking in this specific case. Obsidian and SEGA are done with each other. They were done even before this game was released. SEGA is not going to support DLCs, that's a guarantee. Will they do patches? I assume so, but more in the way of one or two courtesy patches than long-term support. Obsidian can't afford to patch this game on their own time, so that'll be it.

well, I see what you mean then. I wasn't aware of this. it would truly suck if this game didn't get some actual support in the near future. and I was kinda hoping for a sequel, but I'm guessing that's out of the question then.

Hmm.. true enough, now that I consider it myself. But the cancellation of Aliens, was'nt that atleast said to be due to them not wanting to "release too many Aliens games too close together"?

I found this pretty humorous (a lot of spoilers, though):

I think that's the official reason. The real reason is SEGA ran out of money, and needed to make some cuts. One of the Obsidian projects and was an obvious candidate, and Aliens ended up being it, for whatever reason.

Indeed it does, and the voice actors are well coordinated - or atleast I can't remember any times that I've had a bad reaction too the deliveries of their lines.

I'm not an expert on psychiatry but playing as a "sociopath" was an believable affair, it did'nt feel as pointless as it's done in most other games I've played.

Did'nt think Sega had any financial troubles, but I've not read up on them to be honest.

I've tried hard but never managed to imagine an Aliens RPG - no matter how hard I tried I could'nt make it work in my head and keeping it together. Might be because I have too fond memories of the original AvP.

I can imagine the Aliens rpg would have ended up something along the lines of AP/Mass Effect. 3rd person, action-oriented with skill building.

or it might've been yet another Diablo clone. *shudder*

Hot damn, I need to replay the game as an asshole. I've only done two games of trying to get things right and finding out as much as I could, but THIS, this just seems like a hell of a lot more fun. Time to piss of the world as a veteran bastard.

actualy when I see and read what they wanted to make out of the alien RPG ... I am quite glad they canceled that one. What I have read about it on the codex ~ heh Roshambo loves arguing doesnt he ? Hasnt sound that much better either.

He was actually pretty right on it, I think. Usually he just bashes games without reason but at least he pointed out the good and the bad.

Agreed... it seemed to be a more in-touch review than most I've read about the game.

It just dawned on me that I never gave an update on my technical issues:
- the swapping of the stuttering HDD removed some glitches (slower loading textures, some stutter ingame), but nothing huge.
- the reinstalling of the game however totally removed the black market shopping freezes. (reinstalled it with the same CD/DVD+RW drive, so that wasn't the issue)

But quite a few of the annoying glitches remain. Still hoping for a patch some time soon.

So. looks like there will be no second game.

Sega has ruled out the possibility of it publishing a sequel to Alpha Protocol - as it admits that the game's sales were lower than expected.

The Obsidian-developed spy RPG won some good reviews - but ended up with a sub-70 average on Metacritic.

Sega West president Mike Hayes told CVG that the game didn't sell as well as the publisher expected - but that the firm was proud of the "concept" of the title.

"Let's speak very commercially; the game hasn't sold what we've expected, therefore we won't be doing a sequel," said Hayes.

"The concept was brilliant, though," he added. "You know this whole thing with Metacritic where you have to be in the high 70s to mid-80s minimum [to have any success] - well, with RPGs you have got to be in the late 80s.

"Whilst we had a good game, I don't think we had a game that had enough to get us to that upper echelon and I think that was the issue.

"Again, the amount you need to invest to get there is so large because RPGs are naturally big projects. We've decided we won't do a sequel."
