Alpha Protocol

Sad. :(

It's too bad we'll never get rid of this:

"Don't cry too much for developer Obsidian Entertainment. With Fallout: New Vegas and Dungeon Siege 3 in the works, there won't be time to mourn."

That's why we need to do some preemptive mourning for New Vegas and Dungeon Siege 3 right now. Seriously, I'd love for New Vegas to exceed my expectations, but right now, I think Obsidian's becoming the Treyarch of RPGs. (This isn't a good thing.)
Wow.

Just wow.

Yeah, makes me want to argue, but that was how I got banned the first time.

Apparently, calling someone a cunt-lipped dildo-swallower is going too far.

Obsidian should give New Vegas into Bethsoft hands. It's obvious that they know better. :>

By the way. I hate that Metacritics is getting such a big influence on games. Man, it's a bullshit statistic, but nobody cares. Everyone just wants to see the numbers, even if these are bullshit.

1: That scale at the top is pretty much true a good amount of the time now, which is sad and stupid. I hate that people don't understand, a 5 is average, 6 would be above average, anything in a 7 is in the realms of Good. When did it come to people that a 7/10 means AHAhGA-WorstgaMeEbar!

2: I'd really rather never play another Bethsoft Fallout. I'd rather have a buggy Obsidian Fallout, with good writing and improved gameplay mechanics, getting mediocre reviews. Than get the same re-hashed Bethsoft bullshit, with some new textures and the same brain-exploding bad dialogue and C&C, getting praised as GoTY, with all-round stunning reviews.

i had the chance to see a friend play it and here what i gathered:

you cannot alt+tab at all(thus we cannot work and play), the game froze twice, menus are not intuitive, the bad guys are stupid as hell so what if a garage door opened or your friend body is laying in front of you... they AI also got stuck once.

the only skill that matters is sneak with it you can become an invisible ninja and run around unnoticed killing everyone.

from what i seen the game is basically made of a set of linear levels trough which you can either ninja everyone or shoot their ass's.
the dialogue seemed very simple, you always have to choose all the options or the right stance which is always the same for each of the chars (at worst you make a mistake once)

second review, the AI is still crappy the invisibility ninja full room of enemies is ridicules which substrates from the earlier experience, since no planing required anymore just go in and ninja everyone.
the minigames are to easy (even without putting any points into them it), at least half of the skill are pointless and the levels are still mostly linar.

BUT, overall it is one of the more enjoyable games i played(mostly watched) in long time, so i have no problem ignoring the little problems.
the checkpoints system should be tweaked in some levels but i loved the added challenge, feels like old times not the boo hoo i died F8
i didnt liked the dialogue system (i hate choosing stance before i even hear what they had to say) but it works for them and the plot so far seem very nice and its doesn look linear we tested somewhat and the choices/performance we made did made a difference add to that some decent voice acting and a lot of background info and data.

the only thing that did bugged me was the boss fight, they was rough i took us almost an hour taking turns to finish the first one.

anyway bla bla bla Good game.

Game's got some really good writing.

Please tell me it gets better. I'm just starting out in Saudi Arabia and so far the writing is boring me to death with its' "video gameness".

I'm not a big fan of the art style either. Just what the hell is the guy supposed to be wearing? Give him a laser gun and he can fit right in at a sci fi gay joint.

I really hope things pick up and in the right direction.

I heard that complaint now multiple times but I don't get it. Yes, they explain much in the dialog in the beginning about the system itself but it is always subtle enough to still fit in the gameworld. Its nowhere near "Press X to do Z".

Its called "school." Consider that a 50% in school ( whether grade school or college ) is not "average." Its "you failed the class, and need to retake it."

Similarly, games really shouldn't be graded on a pure bell curve, since you kind of do need a lot of room to distinguish between the different degrees of failure.

numbers to represent the quality of a game is pretty stupid anyway. What matters more is to have someone familiar with the gameplay and "maybe" even with the franchise (if its a sequel, prequel, scottish kilt, man-beard etc.). I mean I would expect from someone who is rating a Star Wars game to be as well used somewhat with Star Wars OR at least geting familar with it. That you dont have to know the exact number of Chebwakas hair is obvious, but you should somewhat know who was Lukes father.

What really is surprising how man times you have people familar with shooters make a reveiw about real time strategy games or someone who clearly has a antipathy with tactical games doing a review about a "deep" RPG calling it "too complex" or "boring".

A good review should if possible name the things which are cleary good (like excelent visuals, animations, story telling) and which are not so well done like huge number of bugs or if the visuals are not up to date (with some games one can expect good visuals). Only at the end there should be a personal oppinion about the game but it should not try to so much to be about the quality just what the reviewer personaly dissliked or liked. Its hard to seperate the oppinion from the rest. But one can at least try it.

Well, I put some more time into the game and as of right now, I think it's absolute shit. I really wanted to like it because of Obsidian but now I regret ever defending it and thinking that most people probably didn't get it. To me, it feels like I'm playing an alpha build of a decent game. I say "decent" because there is potential all over the place but it is not fulfilled in any way.

I'm not very picky but I found the missions to be absolutely atrocious. I haven't suffered through such shitty gameplay in a long long while.

Let me describe what just happened:

I arrive at some base that I need to infiltrate. So I get into what looks like a 90-year-old cripple crouch mode and incap a guard. I try to continue onward, avoiding a camera, which seems pretty easy, but it appears that I cannot hop over a foot high obstacle to do so. In AP, you cannot hop over or off ANYthing for no reason whatsoever, unless there is a prompt to do so. This is simply insane for the type of game this is but I can live with it.

What happens next is I turn the corner and get spotted by a guard so I ready my shotgun and blast him from 2 feet away. He doesn't mind that at all, he simply shoots me with his gun, then runs up to me, hits me with the butt of his gun, runs a couple of feet away, shoots me again, runs up again, gets shot with a shotgun at zero range, ignores that fact, hits me with the rifle again and kills me.

Confused by what just happened, I reload the last checkpoint and enter the area again. This time, there is not a single guard there anymore. A glitch, of some kind, I guess and move on to the next section. Somewhere up on a watch tower, someone spots me from a mile away. I switch to my pistol, since the shotgun apparently blasts waves of stink, and I manage to take out the guards, most of whom just rush me. I can't flank shit because of the invisible walls in form of "barriers" I'm supposed to be able to step over, and about 20% of my shots hit their targets but it is still doable because one of the guards kept going up and down a ladder, while another one held a wall at gunpoint. Now I need to get closer to the tower. Suddenly, an alarm sounds... nothing changes. The guy on the tower is still shooting me but no new guards arrive. I get extremely close and kill him after about 15 shots. I search for an alarm switch, while the area is completely dead. I think to myself "wow this is one empty stronghold, it had just 5 guards". I hack the switch and turn the alarm off. I casually stroll beyond one of those construction type fences and to my amazement, the area looks exactly like the one before, with guards completely oblivious to what was happening beyond a tiny barrier, moments before. One of them quickly notices me, since I didn't expect them to be there and just walked in (which I don't think actually matters), and I have the exact same experience I had in the previous section. I have the exact same experience in the next two missions.

Now, tell me, how is this a good game in any sense of the word? I am shocked at how shitty this game is. Granted, I'm at the very beginning of the game but the 3 missions have been identical and the game seems to consist of these missions and they are pure diarrhea. This game needs a massive, and I mean MASSIVE patch to be playable. I hope there is a mod, along the lines of Oblivion Lost for STALKER that made the game what it should have been. I don't know if I can play any more of this without it.

PS,
Don't even get me started on controls. Trying to get behind cover almost made me break the freaking controller.

Granted, I'm at the very beginning of the game

Well, since the very first day, people say that the beginning sucks and it get's better after that.

Yes it does. Especially when you decide to kill a particular character in Moscow and then be a jackass about it.

Imho the writting gets better, the actual gameplay doesn't.
But you should at least try to finish saudi arabia, and decide after that.

I suggest you finish Arabia, then get to Moscow. Best town in the game (with one of the best bosses in video game history imo), I actually reacted kinda like you until Moscow (which I did in second)

As others have said, the writing and choice and consequence get better and better. The only change in combat is that enemies have more health. I also highly suggest getting sneak skill up, to avoid annoying gunfights, and pistols because they are the game's best weapon by a country mile (Chain Shot is more overpowered than VATS, which is something). Only for stuff at extreme range (read; two times in the game) will you need an Assault Rifle. Shotguns are poor and SMGs friggin useless (takes half a clip to kill anybody while 3 pistols shot max and they're down).

Still, I agree with you on the whole. So much wasted potential in this game; the very solid roleplaying saves it from the trash, but doesn't make it a great game unfortunately, because the rest blows.

Also, @ Metaphysician: I actually didn't think about this explanation. Still, I doubt anybody but the most demanding student find 80-85% 'average', but games getting these scores on Metacritic are mostly treated like this.
