Alpha Protocol

For me, AP is actually a combination of a weak shooter with decent RPG elements and a great adventure game.

Wow. Is that you guys called a music video in the 80's?

Anyway, I'm going to rent either this or Red Dead Redemption tomorrow. Depends on if AP is there.

By the way, I could fix my mouse problems with setting "OneFrameThreadLag=False" in the APEngine.ini file, which can be found in "C:\Users\username\Documents\Alpha Protocol\APGame\Config\". Found it in a tech thread in the Obsidian forum... should have checked it out earlier.

With this, the game runs very smooth for me now.

hm, didn't work for me. still got a lot of lag when the game loads new models, and the camera jumps around like crazy if I move the mouse only slightly. I've learned to live with it though, so barely think about it now.

I'm on my second playthrough. this time I'm taking a more commando-ish approach. less sneaking, more shooting. armed with assault rifle, shotgun and a bunch of explosives. I even took the Recruit class at start so I'd have more of a challenge, but so far it's been pretty easy. I guess most of the challenge in my previous game came from trying to remain undetected and not being able to withstand gunfire if they noticed me. this time I can take a lot of bullets before going down.

I'm also trying to make different choices whenever I can to see how different everything plays out. I kinda have a motto this time around: take no prisoners. it'll be interesting to see if I'll have anyone at all my by my side at the end...

sooo... seems like I was lucky on my first playthrough. I only occasionally encountered the bug where enemies disappear after you load the last checkpoint. now it's started happening all the time, which means I have to manually save each checkpoint separatley unless I want to restart the whole mission when this bug leads to me getting stuck. for example, when it happens right before I encounter a boss and the boss disappears after I reload. right now it's become almost unbearable. I hope they fix this first of all (and soon), because it's the only gamebreaking bug I know of.

[spoiler:bee541aac1]Right, I've done every boss so far except Brayko. And I didn't realize that being a mean/ruthless/top option fucker to Heck would get reputation with him up until late into conversations with him, so my rep I assume was too low to get him to spike the cocaine. I have a shitty struggle ahead of me.[/spoiler:bee541aac1]

More likely it will be Red Dead Redemption which is not there, I hear it's sold out and rented out all over the place.

How moddable do you think Alpha Protocol will be…do people expect a complete un-official overhaul, as what has occurred with the Troika games.

My impressions half way through or so:
- Dialogue choices can really turn out differently than you intended. That's really annoying... The choices should be friggin' clear if you're going to have to suffer the consequences.
- Minigames suck and are not even difficult. It's the controls that are a fucking horror (which makes them difficult). Very frustrating.
- Why does my clearinghouse shit freeze every time I buy something? Very annoying if you're buying 400 rounds of assault rifle ammo or so...
- AI and stealth can be a huge fucking pain in the ass.
- Saving system is fubar and often severely flawed.
- Game told me I killed some Marines at the embassy, while I didn't...
- The guns in inventory and clearinghouse are absolutely horrible and upgrades make no to little sense. Seriously... Everything got raped.

Oddly enough, I've been enjoying the game well enough up til now. There was some potential to the game, that's for sure. Too bad they screwed the pooch.

Only viable in Easy, thank god.

And he's missing like 75% of the fun that way.

I'm actually thinking it was made as a PC game then ported to 360, judging by the size of the type on my console and TV, usually it's bigger "console type" like that of Fallout 3. On a console the type is tiiiiiiny, man, I'm sure it's much better on PC.
I don't think so, Tim.

The controls are way too horrible to have been developed for PC.

Besides, it's obvious it's been made for joypads.

Damn, I started with Moscow and got stuck on Brayko, then did all Rome missions and some Taipei ones, and got back to Brayko only to find out I still can't manage to kill him. Even with Heck's coke and with chain shots. When I chain shot him down to his last health bar and then chain shot him again, guess what? He still has the same amount of health. WTF?
It's possible to kite him around the room while you reload.

And if you use your abilities well, he -should- go down eventually. Think he took 5 charges with blades for me (had to use all the health boxes on the wall as well as several stims from my inventory).

That said, sometimes he does seem invulnerable when I think he shouldn't be, I don't know why.

I've asked many times what these bugs are, but so far, nobody really said anything. Everyone was just "its full of bugs! Bugga bugga!". Never anything specific.
Stutter, random freezes, stealth issues, weapon issues, AI on the fritz,...

Never saw this in my game. People say this happens, if you use a crack. :>

When my game stutter, it was when it reloads stuff. Can't really call it a bug. Didn't got any random freezes and can't remember stealth issues. Can't remember weapon issues as well, except enemies sometimes don't have clips in their rifles. AI worked okay for me too. Not more bad than in Deus Ex, Bloodlines, etc. Sometimes it was standing still, but this only very rare for me.

Fair enough, I've only played the 360 version so I wouldn't know, just theorizing. All I do know is that it doesn't have HUUUUUGE CONSOLE TEXT HURR like that of Fallout 3.

Well, that's just my fucking luck then...

Had similar problems when I bought Darkstar One and with some games that run invasive copy protection schemes.

I'm starting to think it'd due to my DVD/CD-drive. The earliest Benq dual layer burner. Had to update the firmware to even be able to play some other games because it always triggered the 'copied CD/DVD' protection shite even when using the original disks.

The DS1 problem was solved with the firmware upgrade.

as with all other bosses in the game, the pistol seems to be the way to go. I killed him within second by throwing a flash bang and placing 5 shots in his head with Chain Shot.

Huh, the game runs without the DVD for me.

Doesn't mean it doesn't check during install.

Also, I never took it out of the drive, so I wouldn't know it runs without it or not.

the only thing that really bothers me with all the videos about the game are those fugly animations. Dont get wrong I really dont want to say the game is bad as I dont know it but considering how long they worked on it and that we reached 2010 and Obsidian is not a that small company they really could have spend more times with animations.

The only animation I think is bad is the sneaking / crouching animation. Rest is not bad to me.

Look at that shooting pose right in the first seconds of the video. Look at it. Is he about to do some kind of exotic dance or something? That's not bad to you?

I am not using SMGs, so I don't care. (Shooting with two SMGs at once is silly anyway.)

What I found very jarring when I saw the video isn't the bad animation, but that there simply isn't any animation when crouching/covering is toggled on and off.

I must've been blinded by the greatness of this game because I didn't reflect at all on animations.

actually, come to think of it... I did react over how patrolling guards look like they ready their weapons when they turn around to walk the other way.

obviously its silly but you could make it at least look good (decent) not Max Payne like which was done 10 years ago ?

I am not complaining about APs content as I dont know it. I am not a graphic whore but some of the visuals and particularl the animations should be a lot better. Even for Obsidian. They are not a small team.
