Any excitement left for Star Wars?

I guess I'm moderately excited. I think Abrams was a bad fit for Star Trek, but he might make a decent science-fantasy film like Star Wars. Getting the films away from Lucas can only be an improvement, and I really don't care about the prospect of ditching the EU stuff. The best use for that would be to steal whatever can make a good film and drop the rest anyway.

As far Disney being "the worst", Lucasfilm was already pretty fucking terrible. All of that awful behavior you describe was already happening while Lucas had control of everything. Star Wars was one of the most commercial, merchandised franchises around even before Disney touched it.

Isn't there a "expanded universe" book where they clone the Emperor and uncover a super duper weapon that is stronger than the Death Star? that just sounds like one of those shows that runs into seasonal rot and just starts recycling it's own plots...

That was my pretty much one my issues with Star Wars Expanded Universe and something I fear Disney will turn too, just declaring the Expanded Universe non canon so that they can do stories from it all over again.
Current trend in the Expanded Universe seemed to be new Sith armies that appeared out of nowhere and suddenly take over the galaxy or most of it (Star Wars The Old Republic, Star Wars Legacy, some of those books that came out after the NJO and that Second Civil War thingy)

I know the setting is called Star Wars but it does not always require massive interstellar wars for good story background.

They don't even need Jedis and clones. But then I guess what's the point of even using the Star Wars setting other than for marketing porpouses?

So, anyone care to bet on what's the story's going to be?
My guess is the whole Darth Caedus thingy, or at least a story inspired by that. So, Jacen Solo falls for the dark side and so on.

I'm excited but not getting my hopes up. They are obviously planning on bringing Star Wars back in a big way, but announcing several movies all at once? Seems like a bit much to me. I would rather they stick to making one amazing movie than 6 alright ones. As a massive Star Wars nerd, part of me is glad just to be able to see another SW in theaters. Part of me still wishes we could get the original trilogy without the garbage added onto it too. Another part hates Lucas for turning Star Wars into what it is today, and ultimately diminishing my love for the universe. That being said...

I hope Han or Luke die early on in the newest one. I would prefer if they left the child actors out of this one. Stick to Luke and Leia's older kids as the focus. Bring back some kind of Sith resurgence. I don't want to see any Emperor clone or Stormtrooper shit to be honest, although I do have a fondness for Dark Troopers.

It would be nice to focus on more technology, less Force usage, at least to a certain extent, so I agree with Crni on that. Everyone loved Boba Fett and the bounty hunters. Hell, I read up on all of those Bounty Hunters in that one scene with Vader in the OT. They were just as interesting. It would be great to see a bunch of Bounty Hunters sent to kill Luke in the new ones. Throw in some Easter Eggs for EU fans. Nothing major or anything, but enough to show the original fans that they care for the source material and aren't just throwing shit to stick.

My main concern is them diluting the franchise even more than it already is. I want the mature themes from the OT, not the bullshit from the prequel. The tone must be correct for me to enjoy it. Abrams isn't a bad choice imo. I can't think of anyone better off hand. I would be interested to see if anyone would have a better choice. I do hope Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher don't ham things up to much. I'm sure they'll do fine. I also can't remember the last time Harrison Ford has impressed me. He generally acts like he hates Star Wars, so I hope he doesn't just dial it in on this one.

I'm anxious to see more about the plot. I do know that.

If you're talking about George, then I have the feeling that a lot of people had some say in Star Wars back then.
I think George personally controlled the production of the first movie as much as humanly possible. He supervised everything and even re-edited the entire film at the last minute because he wasn't happy with it.

My theory about the newer trilogy is that he just completely lost his edge after twenty years of being fabulously wealthy and lacking anyone who could say "no" to him and shoot down his worst ideas. I'm sure he disliked having to fight for everything when he was unknown, but that pressure and adversity kept him focused on what was important.

Frankly, I'm not excited about it at all.

I was stoked when KOTOR came out, and that game provided myself and my high school friends fun beyond counting. Three of us always fell into a particular paradigm that games like KOTOR or Fable could exploit. I was the goodie-two-shoes role player who had an affinity for "magic", friend A was the asshole role player who wanted to beat things up, and friend B was the fence sitter who'd do what both of us did, only halfway. I'd make a force-heavy Jedi and friend A would make a lightsaber badass Sith. I'd make a paragon wizard, friend A would make an evil warrior. You get the drill. But more than simply being able to role play as "something Star Wars", KOTOR was masterful storytelling about the backstory of the Star Wars universe. We got to explore the origins and the cultures of the Sith in the form of an intriguing mystery, rather than as some plot device shoved into a narrative to appease fans. We got to navigate politics while trying to adhere to flexible moral choices, choices that stuck with you, so we'd see consequences play out in the context of Star Wars, and we could see it expand in many different directions, with each direction its own opportunity to flesh out this ripe universe.

It was frustrating to see all of that life in the story get stepped on by the prequels, and watch retcons contradict what other films had established, or were contradicted by other films/games/novels/etc. It was exhausting to see a sci fi fantasy world with such rich material to work with diluted to a simple battle of over-the-top pseudo martial arts that was stupidly popular at the time. I didn't notice bad acting that made me cringe while watching the newer movies, I noticed bad ideas that just frustrated the hell out of me as I watched the newer movies, sick of the shit they injected into the story. I was over Warcraft when Blizzard became a retcon storytelling powerhouse, and I was over Star Wars when Lucas went that same direction. It doesn't matter to me that someone else is directing the film, the series is dead, to me. There will always be KOTOR and KOTOR 2, and that's it. I might see Episode VII, but I won't be going in with ANY expectations.

it seems they decided to film as much as possible with real locations and movie probs:

Star Wars 7: JJ Abrams unveils first alien character – and they're all practical effects not CGI

Star Wars Episode 7 to see less CGI and more models and real droids

some good news in my opinion. Though I really would love to see a strong and well done female protagonist this time, the Star Wars world is full of very well done female characters. Outside the movies. In comics, books etc. Anakin/Darth Vader, Palpatine, Obi-Wan, Luke, Han Solo, there are really quite a lot of great male roles in the previous star Wars movies. But I am missing more female ones. On both, the good and evil characters.

Oh God not another Star Wars re-release... :twitch:
But this is a good and necessary re-release. Or do you have a copy of the original films without CGI-banthas pooping in the streets at home? Preferably in good quality?

It wasn't George that re-edited the movie. It was his wife. At least, she did a part of the work, that I know of. She took a look at the death star run editing, and put in some actual tension. Obviously, George and her seperated at a later date.

They really should make a Cartoon about Imperial Pilots. The video really reminds me to those awesome 80s cartoons.

But for the most part they were pretty shitty and very often they were completely shameless toy commercials.
