Are the Originals... Overrated?

I would say, but that's just my opinion, the big difference is that Fallout New Vegas is already a great game without any mods. It can stand very well on its own. You can not say the same about most Bethesda titles these days. They need tons of mods to be enjoyable in the first place, where as in New Vegas mods are just the icing on the cake. This means that yes, even if they both have the same issues in some areas, I am more forgiving to NV, simply because the game for it self, is not insulting my intelligence as player.

uh
I think a lot of people here will disagree with you on that
I don't see why - KOTOR I and II are among the greatest role-playing games ever, and the absolute best Star Wars game ever made. It even beats the actual canon Star Wars films in a lot of ways. Borderlands is a shoot-and-loot grindfest. Fallout 1 and 2 are more like KOTOR whereas Fallout 4 is more like Borderlands.

Icing? More like doubling the amount of cake. Mods really help Fallout New Vegas become fantastic and really good experience.

...not the KOTOR part.

Hmm? What's wrong with KOTOR?

It's lore is so much more interesting then everything but the Empire and Rebellion conflict.

@Irwin John Finster just equated the value in KOTOR to Borderlands, on a forum fairly dedicated to upholding the purity of RPGs. It's not KOTOR that I imply this site would consider bad...

You know, some people might take this as you thinking "the majority of people who enjoyed Fallout 4's writing, and by extension the majority of gamers as a whole, are idiots". Just a heads-up, no offense. If you don't care, fair enough.

I think you misunderstand my intention with my statements. Let me try to clarify:

Fallout 1 and 2 are comparable to KOTOR as some of the greatest RPGs ever made.

Fallout 4 is closer to Borderlands than KOTOR.

Comparing Fallout 1 and 2 to Fallout 4 is like comparing KOTOR to Borderlands.

I didn't disagree, or misunderstand. It's just that... certain individuals here would outright take offense to saying that Borderlands is in any way at all as fun as KOTOR. It was just a snide remark, nothing serious.

Wanamingos and Centaurs are only major random encounters around San Fran. Since there are so few major settlements in that location, and you only learn about nearby areas after Arroyo's destruction, it's assumed that you won't travel there until late game.

I don't see why you think the Shi are stupid. Apart from the subtle stereotyping, I don't see why you dislike them so much.
The Shi don't really fit in with the Fallout universe tbh. They kinda just are there y'know? Hanging around doing Shi stuff. It's not like they're really that special, like the NCR is.

Filling the space, just unique enough as a faction to not seem like a hack-job in writing. I kinda see that, actually. Every game needs these kind of factions though, the ones that are just there to avoid emptiness.

I know I'm late to this topic but hell no they aren't overrated, it's the complete opposite in fact. I don't know if I'd call them underrated though, I'd actually just call them underplayed. More fans of Fallout 3 and New Vegas should play 1 and 2. I started with the new ones and I transitioned into the old ones pretty easily. My only complaint was the lack of direction, fix that with the wiki and they line up perfectly. So yeah, not overrated at all. If anything, they aren't talked about enough.

I think the OP is specifically referring to their reputations on this site, on the outside world this thread probably would've been titled "Are the originals underrated?".

In that case, I'd still say people around here are pretty fair. I feel like most people here are pretty good about criticizing Fallout 2. Kind of hard to criticize Fallout 1 with how much of a classic it is, I can think of a few things though. Some of the writing early on is kind of weak in shady sands. Like the first NPC you talk to just says, "I am Seth" when you talk to him. His dialog feels kind of fake and half assed. Also, the companions aren't fleshed out like they are in Fallout 2, like Ian for example. There is also the quest where you save the girl in the Hotel and she thanks you by literally giving you free sex like in ride to hell. That's about it though, it's an amazing game, I'm even cool with the time limit on the water chip quest.

Still doesn't explain much tbh. Yes they are a fairly excluded faction, that mostly stay out of the way of the rest of the world, and they aren't that great either, but I still don't see why having a kinda meh faction comes of badly on FO2. It wouldn't make the game any better if they left them out.

And Fallout New Vegas has some kinda meh factions as well. Its a great game but I mean honestly who gives 2 flying fucks about Sloan. And the Vipers and Jackals: They are a step above the generic FO3 Raider gangs, but lets face it, Obsidian only implemented it to bring back Nostalgia from FO1 and FObible , and to add a couple raiders. The game would be exactly the same without them.

Firstly, she was a prostitute, so its kinda what she does for a living anyone, shes just giving you her most special service. Secondly, if you talk to the barkeep, it turns out shes a jet addict, and instead of paying off her debt to the hotel, she spent everything you gave her on jet.

Fair point, and we haven't really seen that much of them anyhow. I slightly care about Sloan for Snuffles, and I like how the quarry workers aren't just innocent NCR citizens. They're secretly carrying drugs around.

The Vipers and the Jackals weren't annoying like the Shi were. They made sense with how they got in that situation in the first place.

If anyone doesn't like Sloan, they can fight me 1v1 swear on me mums grave. ill rek them m8 /s

Still don't quite get why you think the Shi don't make sense though. Why do you think the situation the Shi are in doesn't make sense?
