Bethesda dev speaks

My sentiment as well.

Bethesda's whole attitude on Fallout has been a mess. Traditionally Bethesda kept to themselves with game development and that's their right. But then they go and buy a series name who's previous developer, Black Isle, thrived on fan input and the fans came to expect this. They really should've understood this before bidding on the franchise. :?

The 'Vision' Thing

Beth Dev:
... However, I have enjoyed what I have played for the most part. I like the setting and dialogue and I like how your skills affect you ability to communicate with people a lot. I don’t, however, agree with you on the combat system. To me, it feels like an excruciatingly slow Diablo. I don’t see it as being particularly more involving, just much, much slower. To each there own I suppose. ...

Might say something similar about chess.
Throw out a flippant line at how it's got too many rules and feels even more tedious and slow, as irritating a death watch, as checkers.
Perhaps, some find pursuit of herpes or meditating on soil erosion more entertaining.

Might say something similar about (any) FPS.
The EGO EYE VIEW, a floating TWO DIMENSIONAL WINDOW, a repetitive motion treadmill, grinding out an eternity of conflict resolution. Training for Hell?
Perhaps, some find the pursuit of dust bunnies or the meditating on belly button lint more entertaining.

Clothes dryer exhaust cogged long enough, both species are blue at this address. Denim indigo. Feel so-oo special.

My observation, the marco puzzle of the FO game system was not deemed worthy of climbing the learning curve.

Maybe. It's a ""Nex Gen Life"".
'No pain / no gain' need not apply.
Action satisfaction feeds on a constant dribbling trail of eye candy. PC a Pac Man eating the dots and power ups, running from the ghosts, so war never changes.
The hypnotic immersion of point and click. Keyboard/mouse, or the sex toy vibrating pleasure of a console controller. Similar altered state as TV channel surfing.

Maybe. It's just the 'Vision' Thing.
We have different attention spans available for attempting various tasks.
We have personal preferences on what vision style to favor.
Tech and science 'redding' are slow grinds. Teh hard.
Philosophy and other sophisticated constructs are slippery and / or sticky when shrouded in the fog of .... academic jargon. Slow grinds. Teh hard.

One game player's entertainment, the losing of self in a dance with death, and the pwning of phat loot and big titted elves, is another's 'been there done that' ...
One game player's entertainment, the mastering of a complex social, vectored consequential 'puzzle' is another's 'teh hard'.

Beth Dev:
.... To each there own I suppose. ...

and it's possible to see how different visions perceive, a differing version of FO.
A FO conceived in Bethesda's image.

I know! I get that all the time!

Anyway... That was beautiful, well put, glad i got to see a fresh work of art here! :P

btw i kinda wish the counter included hours and minutes and stuff, though that might make the wait seem longer :(

JoelBurgess posted earlier in a thread.

I can't let Grant be one iota cooler than me, so here goes.

1) what's your job at Bethesda?
Lead level designer

2) what previous projects have you worked on at Bethesda and elsewhere?
I came on towards the end of Oblivion. Most of the dungeons had been built by then, but us noble few were able to re-vamp some to be more interesting. I also worked on some DLC, mostly Mehrunes' Razor, which I did with another LD, Jeff Browne. Shivering Isles was next, of course, and now we're on Fallout. We've got a lot of big ideas for the game, I can't wait for you guys to get a hold of it.

3) what have you drawn on for inspiration in developing Fallout 3? Books, movies, music, etc would be fine, if you don't want to name any games.
Talk about enjoyable research. Let's see... Books; The Road, the Postman, the Wasteland comics, The Martian Chronicles, Tank Girl, heh. Film; Testament, The Day After (not tomorrow...), A boy and His Dog - which is really the closest-to-template Fallout film I've seen - the Mad Maxes, some campy 50's flicks, Six String Samurai, Damnation Alley, Soylent Green, Omega Man (gotta love Heston), and of course the games - Arcanum, Bloodlines, Planescape, Fallout 1&2 - obviously all of those, but so many other games that we can be inspired by or learn from - from Zork to Facade to STALKER.

Yeah, and I feel cheesy admitting it, but Apocalyptica really helps me get in the mood to work on Fallout, as well as Ben Hogue's stuff. Hendrix, too, though that's really got nothing to do with Fallout!

At least the influences give some hope.

Sorry if this is the wrong place for this. Couldn't find a more appropriate thread. Wormgod speaks:

<Ratwar> Are you sure you don't want them near you? I mean, 40 year old crazy men that live in their mother's basement sound like the best kind of friend to me ;)
<VXSS> same goes with every game and every company. we could seriously give a !@#$ what negative fanatics have to say. Its like a riot.... 5 people start looting, 5000 more jump in for the hell of it, without really knowing why
The rest wasn't relevant.

Well the first thing that comes to my mind after reading this is "Pathetic".

Second, what basement? I live happily in my own apartment.

Regarding guns, well I am not into them myself but I have enough acquitances who are quite knowledged and skilled in those who also are into Fallout.
I would be more than happy to introduce both parties to each other.

Archie doesn't even know what the VaultBoy is, as long as he stays away from the Fallout fora I'm happy. Speaking of which their Fallout3 channel is deserted.

It's already estabilished that the Fallout's alternate universe has its own weapons like 14mm pistol or Combat Shotgun - there's no reason why anyone in Fallout universe would make RL weapons other than laziness of developers that couldn't invent more their own unique weapons and "I want! I want!! I WANT!!!" of RL weapons fans.

Calm down, or they'll finally hate us and choose Real time FPS with no dialogues and linear gameplay, just to fuck us :( Oh, sorry, it's probably already done

I don't have a problem with that, as long as everyone does the same thing as me: don't buy Fallout 3.

Bethesda will go bankrupt then, lol. Like the dude says, they don't make games solely for other people.

King of Creation said:
Is that chatspike fallout 3 channel even associated with Bethesda at all?

It's like their #elderscrolls channel, unofficial but the closest thing to an official one there is.

So the people who bought Oblivion pretty much pay for these people's frolics, so they can make more games for themselves?

In any other situation people would say "Screw you." and leave with their cash but these people actually have a working scheme.

I want in on that, make stuff for myself and have other people pay for it.

Shouldn't ALL GAME DEVELOPERS be trying to satisfy their customers? Bethesda don't have a bright future if they want to make games for themselves and 'tell' customers what they want. Customers tell them what they want and game developers are suppose to meet those demands.

Not sure if that one really applies, I think games are both what a developer wants AND what customers/gamers want
If new games are solely based on customer demands there wouldn't be much innovation.

Yeah but it's not as if these new weapons went and replaced the old Fallout ones as far as I know. They were just additions.
