Fallout 3 GotY: EMA Best RPG, PC Gamer #1

I can't even begin to conceive how BethSoft's Fallout 3 could possibly be PC game of the year material, when almost every aspect of the game is seriously flawed, from game mechanics, to story, to technical execution. RPG of the year, sure, that's a no-brainer, but game of the year? I'm fully aware that 2008 wasn't a very good year for mainstream games, but I can nonetheless think of at least a couple of games that are better designed and more polished, and in some cases more massive and complex. I'm mainly referring to STALKER: Clear Sky (which practically directly competes with FO3) and GTAIV, though stuff like L4D and Cryis Warhead might qualify too. And that's just looking at mainstream triple-A games. Niche and indie scene have had a much better year in comparison, if the new King's Bounty, Mount&Blade and Word of Goo are anything to go by.

Come to think of it, pretty much the only area where FO3 trumps every other game is marketing. It really isn't hard to pick out your GotY when you still have a bronze tan from that BethSoft-sponsored trip to Barbados.

Great ideas never die. It didn’t matter that Fallout was a series that was silent for 10 years. The world and core mechanics of Fallout 1 are so inherently awesome that they deserved to be done again, but in a new way. So much of reinventing something again is the presentation. Read old game reviews and see how the audience responded at the time, and find a way to make that happen again. Don’t let anyone tell you ‘People no longer like that.’ What I wouldn’t give to see X-Wing or Wing Commander reborn again. Hmmmm.
I wonder, is Todd Howard even capable of talking about Fallout (and old games in general) without sounding like a corporate slimeball? I don't know if he's deliberately sleazy and mendacious, but whenever I read one of his statement in the media, I always feel like I'm being anally probed with a cheese grater. I can only imagine how frustrated Fallout developers must feel when they read this distasteful crap with full knowledge that this guy now owns their beloved creation.

My daughter was the best thing that came of last year (newborn). F03 is kinda like that new boyfriend she's dating, you don't like it but you have to accept it.
Dude, your daughter is one year old and she's already dating? Either she's aging incredibly fast or your style of parenting is *highly* unconventional.

LOL!

Remember the days when Baldur's Gate and similar good quality RPGs got awards?

Quoting FDR: "2008 will be a year that will live in infamy", at least for some of us...

Diary of an inlander:

Big white chief Todd came up near the village today.
He gathered us, all young bloods and offered a bead, some shiny pebbles and a mirror to each one, in exchange for our golden wristlets and necklaces.
I’m so excited, how marvelous they look and I can see myself in the mirror, immersed and thrilled I am.

Even Saints Row 2 is better than FO3 in my book. There was actually some fun to be had. Dumb, yes, but better than dumb and boring.

Personally i think Left 4 Dead was the game of the year, not only was it a fun fps (something that f3 only wished it was) who doesn't love blowing zombies heads off with a 12 gauge? Even though the story was sparse (and in some cases non-existant) it was far more enthralling than fallout 3 so it's got two up on f3.

Then why didn't you.

Don’t let anyone tell you ‘People no longer like that.’

Erm, YOU told us that? Repeatedly?

Pick one version and go with it. Either the "core" game's great and could be done again or it's inadequate and has to be updatorz.

Like isometric perspective, turn based combat, believable cities, memorable characters, and creative writing?

Nah man! Fucking violence/gore, guns and 50's post-apo setting!

Which only speaks for the bad shape the whole block buster game industry just is in at the moment if a game like Fallout 3 can easily become the "best RPG of the year". ... Kinda depressing.

Been that way way since about year 2000... not sure what you mean by "at the moment" lol. 1985 to 1993 were the glory days of PC gaming. Then there was a bunch of crap that people were trying to peddle to all the noobs who'd just discovered home computers. Things were looking up a bit in the late 1990s, but it only lasted a couple years. PC gaming is dead. It's always been a niche market... which was fine when the PC was a niche industry. That was a long time ago. The game companies don't intend to make games for a tiny segment of an industry as vast as what exists now. They've been loud and clear about that. People don't listen. Find new hobbies, folks :)

I have to say that I kinda liked Knights of the Old Republic. Even though when it is a very typical "Black vs White" game and something Bioware made already many times, but for a Star Wars setting it fitts.

Not as good doesn't mean bad. There's still great games out there, including on the PC, it's just not a torrent, more of a trickle, and many of us never had the time for the torrent anyway

Besides...indies.

Probably that's why Crysis and S.T.A.L.K.E.R are so popular.. I know a lot of gamers in my country and every single one of them plays on PC, so I don't really know what are you talking about here.

And yeah, as BN said - indies. That and modding communities. I still say fuck consoles. Even if I still love my Super Mario World for SNES.

Hell, in Poland Fallout 3 hasn't even come out on consoles, only on the PC.

Because Poland is 10 years behind :P

That makes it kinda oldschool.

Well it's not like Fallout 3 was released 10 years later in Poland, now was it? :) There was both console and PC gaming 10 years back too..

That's not the point.

If we are talking about "old school" in a Falloutish way, then they are probably more advanced then a few modern states.

Seriously? I haven't been in Poland for 4 years, but as I remember things weren't so good, and by comparing Poland to a country like England, the political and governmental advancement was outstanding in England when I first time saw the differences.

And that's what I meant by "10 years behind".

But nevermind.
