I can't even begin to conceive how BethSoft's Fallout 3 could possibly be PC game of the year material, when almost every aspect of the game is seriously flawed, from game mechanics, to story, to technical execution. RPG of the year, sure, that's a no-brainer, but game of the year? I'm fully aware that 2008 wasn't a very good year for mainstream games, but I can nonetheless think of at least a couple of games that are better designed and more polished, and in some cases more massive and complex. I'm mainly referring to STALKER: Clear Sky (which practically directly competes with FO3) and GTAIV, though stuff like L4D and Cryis Warhead might qualify too. And that's just looking at mainstream triple-A games. Niche and indie scene have had a much better year in comparison, if the new King's Bounty, Mount&Blade and Word of Goo are anything to go by.
Come to think of it, pretty much the only area where FO3 trumps every other game is marketing. It really isn't hard to pick out your GotY when you still have a bronze tan from that BethSoft-sponsored trip to Barbados.

I wonder, is Todd Howard even capable of talking about Fallout (and old games in general) without sounding like a corporate slimeball? I don't know if he's deliberately sleazy and mendacious, but whenever I read one of his statement in the media, I always feel like I'm being anally probed with a cheese grater. I can only imagine how frustrated Fallout developers must feel when they read this distasteful crap with full knowledge that this guy now owns their beloved creation.Todd said:Great ideas never die. It didn’t matter that Fallout was a series that was silent for 10 years. The world and core mechanics of Fallout 1 are so inherently awesome that they deserved to be done again, but in a new way. So much of reinventing something again is the presentation. Read old game reviews and see how the audience responded at the time, and find a way to make that happen again. Don’t let anyone tell you ‘People no longer like that.’ What I wouldn’t give to see X-Wing or Wing Commander reborn again. Hmmmm.
Dude, your daughter is one year old and she's already dating? Either she's aging incredibly fast or your style of parenting is *highly* unconventional.Mentats said:My daughter was the best thing that came of last year (newborn). F03 is kinda like that new boyfriend she's dating, you don't like it but you have to accept it.
