It's not a case of being unique, it's more about if you can hide that or trick the audience in it being unique or just execute it well. Bethesda does it bad either way.
Obviously, that is the feat they fail to perform!
And, I suspect this happens a lot - when non-creative, non-inventive people are let in on the process, like those old farts with their graph-sheets "this sells better, increase that with 60%"
It reminds me also of a little anecdote, my brother used to make beats for a band he had back in his wild youth, and - he is creative, so... he would make a beat, and then he would add a funky little sound, a little "teaser", a little effect if you will, that was rare and far between, but sounded really groovy - something you'll sit and wait for.
His less creative friends heard the sound - and immediately exclaimed "omg that was awesome! dude! put that sound on repeat!!!" <---totally missed the point!
And I think similar attitudes often take over in the entertainment industry
