As Computer and Videogames reports Fallout: New Vegas won in the 'Best RPG' category at the 2011 Golden Joystick awards, winning on titles such as The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings and Dragon Age II.

Congratulations to the teams at Obsidian and Bethesda then.

Witcher II might have been able to beat FNV as I heard some good things about it though I have not played it myself.
Dragon Age II, okay I really did not play this game either but what I saw and what I read this game barely qualifies of what I understand what a RPG is suppose to be.

When it came to 'AAA' RPGs, FNV really had no competition.
Hmm, perhaps some Euopean RPGs but I am not sure, BN and Sea are probably more knowledgeable on those than me.

Witcher 2 is much more beautiful, polished and the choices and consequences are well done. That said, many people seem to love the open-ended feel of a sandbox game, myself included. I would have had a hard time choosing between the two.
Witcher 2 sold over a million units on PC. Jeez, that's awesome.

New Vegas is the better rpg. Witcher 2 is the better cinematic experience.

Witcher 2 is the better gameplay experience. There's too much wrong with New Vegas to pretend TW2 is only better at "cinematics".

I'd personally hold New Vegas higher than Witcher 2 in gameplay as well. I liked the Witcher 2 but there are a lot of things that are "wrong" with that game as well. Not that the shooting bits are particularly good in Beth's gamebryo engine but I found the hack'n'slashing bits in Witcher 2 to be equally horrendous. It was nice that combat was deadly but I could not get used to how goddamn clunky I found the gameplay to be, even as I finished it. Haven't played it with the last patch though which supposedly improved things.

Given the competition there, New Vegas would be the winner easily on my personal list.

Perhaps. We don't really have to consider New Vegas this year for GameBanshee. Right now the winner is probably the Witcher 2, with Drakensang: The River of Time an easy runner-up. TRoT is seriously underrated/ignored.

Yeah, that was a good RTw/P Baldur's Gate-esque game. Still don't like some next-gen features about it(auto-regen after battles), but it was still challenging and interesting.
I keep getting tempted by the expansion/DLC/whatever on Steam.

    EDIT:
I haven't picked up Dragon Age 2, but from what I've read, kinda funny it was even considered.

I'm penning up a review of the expansion soon. It's not very good, basically just a combat trawl, but with a pretty neat setting and some nice visuals. Decent value at ten bucks. It's kind of integrated into the game like the BG-expansions of yore, so best kept for another/first playthrough.

Its more Mid 2010-Mid 2011. Would be a little early for that,

Tells you how unexceptional most releases since have been.

If you ask me, there was not a single real RPG released this year. :smug:

However, I agree with Lexx. New Vegas comes the closest to what RPGs once have been and it even made me play more than I want even though I can't stand 3d aRPG. The Witcher is nice too, but the RPG aspects are almost nill.

Thanks to BNs Let's Play of the River of Time on the codex, my interest for the game rose a bit, I'll soon give it a try.

yeah I agree it would have been a great game if it wasnt going for this silly shooter combat like Fallout 3 ...

I have to say I think the Witcher 2 deserved to win more than New Vegas. I have replayed NV 3 times and I really don't want to play it again. The combat is just not very fun, the engine sucks and is frustrating, and it's quite ugly. Obviously the visuals in the Witcher are much better but even compared to the orignial Fallouts I find the NV graphics so dated and hard to look at. I still play Fallout 2 every year or so and it still doesn't fell as dated as NV - the combat is much more enjoyable and the graphics, although in a different style, are easier on the eyes.

I love both, but I would give the edge to Witcher 2. Finished that game twice and thinking about third playthrough. The story/writing/atmosphere is just so delicious. And it does not require hours of modding it to become acceptable.

Once all DLC for NV are on sale, I will replay NV too though. Just not looking forward to messing around with mods (which I will have to do, because vanilla is just too horrible in some respects).

The Witcher 2 definitely needed some mods for me, more than New Vegas actually. Gameplay was just all-around bad. But what can I say, tastes.

I now wonder what the contenders for next year will be, there really are not that much contenders unless you also account the releases of smaller developers and of course indie studios.

Skyrim will probably be among the list but I find that disappointing as to me it feels more because they could not find any other games than that it really was a great RPG. (yeah I know I am judging a game before it is released but I think its pretty obvious to everyone what Skyrim will be like)
