i'm kind of sad that two major disappointments have made everyone think all mods are bad. just read the comments on 4 decent friend's coverage on new california.

some are even blaming fallout 2 for new california and the frontier.

If they want to finish their projects this decade, they probably shouldn't branch out.

What I don't understand is how are you going to look at a mod that earnestly claims to be as fun and compelling at the base game and not expect that project to end in anything other than disappointment?

Fallout 2 is very hit or miss with the OG fanbase. A lot of it had to do with the whacky content. However, Fallout 2 did do some things well like New Reno which does receive praise from the fanbase. I don't know why Fallout 2 is given so much heat while Old World Blues is filled to the brim with over the top and whacky content yet many consider it to be the best New Vegas dlc.
Also, I wouldn't blame Fallout 2 for the mess that was the Frontier or New California. As fellow moddder Keylancer from the Nexus has told me; "A lot of these big project modders never played the OG Fallout's or understood New Vegas. Most were TES players that got their start in Fallout with Fallout 3."
He is right on this. The Frontier devs hated New Vegas and the OG Fallout's and originally wanted to make their mod be for Fallout 3 but the New Vegas Geck and engine are easier to work with. The New California dev originally had his mod be for Fallout 3 but moved to New Vegas as, again, the New Vegas Geck was easier to work with. Also, judging from his knowledge of the series, I can surmise that the New California dev probably also didn't play the OG Fallout's and just read articles about the games from the Fallout Wiki.

Pretty sure Skyblivion is supposed to be done soon. Maybe this year sometime, I think?

Fallout 2 is random with it's wacky stuff- one city has a ghost, another a talking plant and an intelligent radscorpion, Supermutant magician resides in the MMB summoning deathclaws, cult that is almost 1:1 parody of Scientology, good karate master dueling evil karate master etc.

Old World Blues isn't my favourite, but it feels consistent with it's wacky stuff. Here's a bunch of scientists that spent centuries running demented experiments and lost their humanity.

Klein yells about PC's penis fingers, Dahla masturbates to PC breathing and Borous recreated his high school to get back at his bullies. All these fit OWB.

yeah owb is alot more consistent with what it's trying to do humor wise. and there is a hint of sadness with the think tank when you realize they are clearly insane.

When you put it that way, maybe OWB was what Fallout 2 could have been if they had more time and more people around to put some restraint on the writers in order to make the wackiness in the game more consistent.

Considering the ending slide has the narrator confuse Hopeville for the Divide itself, I can believe this.

What I find odd is people are willing to spend literal days working on a mod, but are unwilling to do research on the lore.

some do. then you get people claiming they break lore anyway.

like i remember people complaining in th3overseer's depths of depravity mod that the ncr had functioning trucks. when that's in the base game.

yeah it seems like to some people world after nukes fell means cars and electricity just stop existing.

there is clearly power in the fallout world as shown by the vaults, some pre war buildings, and the robots.

I have been reading "A Writers Journey" and will so begin reading "The Anatomy of Story". One of the things that both authors talk about being the most important part of a story is the premise. Without a good premise the story will fall apart. When I read those story notes all those years ago I knew right then and there that The Frontier had no premise. They, like children, just decided to copy and paste story elements from other games and movies that they thought was cool. Hell, according to Tgspy, they had no idea why they had the story take place in Portland other then "they thought it would be cool". After I get done reading those two books I may write an essay for NMA on why the Frontier failed. Would make for a good essay for when I go back to college this fall to get my AA in English Literature.

When I heard that I cringed so hard. It completely goes against the lore. Mainly that the furthest West that the Legion have gone to is the Mojave. Both the NCR and Legion in base New Vegas and Ulysses in the DLC even tell you that. Yet here they are as far as Portland. The premise right there should have told people that this mod was doomed the moment it went into production.

yeah it was brought up with a map that there is no way the legion could get to portland with out the ncr noticing.

but somehow the ncr did not notice until thier outcasts went there.

..........wait a minute. the ncr exiles are just the bos from fallout 3 god damn it.

Well this mod was made by Fallout 3 fanboys. Does it really surprise you that they would be inspired to make a mod with the same story structure as Fallout 3?

I don't know why Modders want to make the previous game into the newest one, Beyond Skyrim I get but Skywind and Skyblivion? That seems like a waste of time and the most boring thing you could do. Maybe a Morrowrim would be interesting from a certain standpoint but the Tamriel Rebuilt approach seems much more worthwhile. I mean do we need remakes of Fallout 3 and NV? It would be much more interesting exploring those locations during the time of Fallout 4 and not rehash the same shit over and over again, I'm beginning to think those projects are just resume material. In regards to Frontier-tier faggotry I've seen some leaked Beyond Skyrim Morrowind discord posts that don't look promising but I'm still interested in seeing what will come of it.
