Explored and expanded a'la Oblivion?

Oblivion's biggest problem was that it wasn't an exploration of something new. It was Bethesda falling back on generic, classic fantasy. Dungeons, castles, elves, and knights. Compare that to Morrowind, which was one of the most unique and alien fantasy worlds I've ever seen.

The lore of Cyrodill is basically generic fantasy though, so what're you gonna do? I think that, had Oblivion been in one of the other alien provinces (Black Marsh or Sumurset, maybe?), it would've been better.

I was referring to how Beth promised Oblivion for hardcore role-players. Also, does anyone see the parallel between Oblivion's hype and F3's?

Bioshock Wink

50s inspired post-nuclear role playing game?

Fallout 3 is NOT a fringe game. Bethesda has a responsibility to their stockholders, their employee's families, and to their customers to make a game that will be successful.

Um The entire Fallout series Is more or less in movie terms a Cult Classic it was never a mainstream game it was one of those games that was spread by word of mouth. I heard about from a friend and so did he and I have talked to many fans of Fallout and they have similar stories. Bethdusa is trying to make fallout mainstream which is something that fallout is not. Interplay already tried this and look were it got them.

As for Bethesa responsibility to their stockholders and employees i would first start by saying they mostly care about the stockholders then there employees, then they have their customers thats debatable how much they care due to their lack of interest in fan feedback with any of their games. They are like EA in that sense and right now being a happy cnc3 fan because EA did listen to the fans and noticed that it helps sell a game when you do.

If you piss off a fan base then you have people who are negatively talking about said game if you make them happy and listen to them and explain why some things will make it and others wont then you have a fan base promoting your sales its free advertisement and sales will go up

You crazy smooth skins and your crazy logic! ...I can't take all this repetition anymore. I'm going to bed! ...Well, home, then to bed.

Isn't mullins' artwork evidence for Bethesda's knowledge of Fallout atmosphere? The picture of the group of people standing over a corpse in front of camp- it's very... Fallouty, yes? If Mullins knew nothing of the franchise beforehand, then he would have needed someone with strong knowledge of the game to explain that to him.

That pic was alright in terms of style in my opinion, but still not very Fallouty as whole, although some of the right elements were included. Fallout by numbers, with a few mistakes bringing down the whole. It is very subjective, but my main fear is that role playing mechanics elements are neglected when they are just as important as the setting.

And again, please edit rather than double posting.

Mm.

Well, this was fun, but I've spent enough time trifling about stuff that doesn't matter. It was fun being civil with a group known for being cloistered off.

To tell you the truth, I don't really care that much about the fallout franchise. I've played through Fallout 2, and some of Tactics, but nothing else. Still, I enjoyed trying to change your minds :D

Too many things crawling out of the wood work to quote them all.

Fallout 3 is a sequel to a series of games, it's not a movie tie-in. Fallout was never a comic, graphic novel, novel, movie or tv-series. So gameplay is important, it's a big part of what is Fallout, plus the decision to make what's basically a PnP simulator came before the decision to make it a Post Nuclear game. Unlike say Star Wars and Star Trek where you can stick the franchise label on just about any game type you can't do that with a gaming franchise. Oh you can make spin-offs, but we've had a couple of those and they didn't do well.

Yeah those of us who post here at NMA against FO3 might be small in number but so what, forums only ever attract a small percentage of a games fans. Just look at Oblivions sales figures and how many actually post on the official forums. Are their posts any less valid because they're only a small representative of the total number who've played Oblivion?

Yeah we're nitpicking, we've got to vent our anger somehow. And to those who think we shouldn't be angry, well wait to something you love get's bent over and reamed repeatedly and see how you like it. Not just once or twice but when it happens several times in a row it's starting to feel like a gang bang.

Metroprime, never heard of it, but there's a big difference from a 2d platformer going 3d and a CRPG PnP sim becoming an action rpg.

Isometric Turnbased won't sell in a modern western market? How's JA2 doing on Steam, does anyone know? But if there's no one making any then yeah they won't sell.

TB doesn't work in 3d? Tell that to Silent Storm.

Right there explains it. you need to play through Fallout 1 And Fallout 2 to fully get the gameplay aspect of Fallout itself.

Then you'd understand why there are alot of compasionate people who enjoyed it.

And when you play the Fallout:Tactics or Fallout:Brotherhood of Steel(never played but the back of the gamebox said enough).

THEN you can understand why people are defensive when it comes to Fallout. You can then fully understand the pain Beth's seems to be inflicting on Fallout Fans. Hardcore or Mid-range Core fans.

Ohhh... this is just.... so.... depressing......

Wow, I mean, it looks like, oh my god....

It looks like they tried to copy S.T.A.L.K.E.R. a little bit with that whole "Weapons Degrade with use" thing, the "bar" thing, the "actually having AI" thing, and not only that the graphics look a lot like bioshock, I don't know what the fuck that "Behemoth" is, it looks like a behemoth pile of shit. AFAIK, it looks like they got the gore and the visual style kind of right, except for those damn monsters(how does that look anything like a fucking supermutant? Is that what they look like on the east coast? What the Fuck?) And a MINI nuclear bomb launcher??? What the Fuck?
I don't even know what this game is anymore... Fuck....

And yes, I just noticed this news article and I'm very regretful I didn't look yesterday... Shit! Shit! Shit!

Just some thoughts:

I'm somewhat happy / optimistic to be honest. Atleast graphic-wise it's looking great so far (the world in teaser and in these latest shots). It's about the atmosphere, and i'm feeling it from those shots.

I'm very happy that the choice / conscience is still intact (we'll see in what degree though), but for the karma system, i'm not sure. It's of course a good thing that there's actually somekind of a measure to see what kind of person you are in the game, but i can only hope they have tweaked it a bit. For example, EVEN if your character was before, the cream of the cream (+300 karma, champion of all, wet dream of the ladies and daughters alike), that by doing some evil deed you would be able to destroy all of that good reputation, just because YOU made that choice to do it. I can't really remember how much you would've lost reputation in fallout 2 by, blowing Gecko's powerplant up, or super stimpacking tandi down, but the consciences should be harder then, eh, -100 karma?

It's quite hard to say how the combat system will work in action. What i only saw now was just a close combat encounter with an angry looking orc, odd (out of place) looking targeting system and that SLIGTHLY weird looking glimmering war hammer. Of course there was also the sweet motion blurred combat (big fucking deal) and the always-so-silly head explosion, a direct attempt for gore to show that THIS IS NOT A GAME FOR KIDDIES! What remains to be seen, is how combat from a distance, or how fighting 'n' targeting multiple enemies works. The idea of managing that from a first persion view feels, restricting to say the least, but i'm willing to give it a try. If done right, it might just be great.

However my personal biggest concern so far and what i'm fearing the most (for some reason) is that most the people / survivors in the wasteland will just be turned into this kind of faceless mass of enemies. No matter is it a mutant, ghoul or just evil-looking guy in a leather jacket with a scar around the cheek, they all just want to kill you. Any kind of real interaction / dialogue will be done between the merchants and your Dad. Next-gen survival horror action rpg adventure indeed.

I also dispise the whole dad aspect of the game. I just hope the whole "main quest" doesn't revolve around finding my... dad. Trapping radio signals, asking people around that "have you seen my dad!?" and after 30 hours of frustration you're ready to make that Choice to beat that ol' (runaway) bag into a bloody pulp, so i can continue my happy go go looting sessions. Of course this will be prevented because he's a vital part of the main quest, so for that reason alone he cannot be killed.

Speaking of those radio signals, i like the idea aswell, but to me it sounds so much like Oblivion's over-the-shoulder kind of quest fetching, but perhaps in a bit more frequent basis. Hmm.

Not sure how the lack of proper NPC's / companions will affect the game. Of course in the old fallouts it was WAY too easy to convince somebody to go with you, 'til the end or the world, if it's a must, but they totally gave a nice little spice to the game. Atleast i couldn't anymore play without Cassidy (gauss rifle) or Sulik (mega power fist). But, i don't see it as such a big problem though.

Ok, so now we finally have some more information of the game, but it's definitely still a very early glipse . It might suck totally, might be mediocore (propably) or super duper great, bestest in the world! However i CANNOT UNDERSTAND how some people can already say, that they're not going to buy the game, or those who say they're definitely going to buy the game, when we still have well over a year before the supposed release date.

It propably won't give the same fix as the first fallouts gave, and still do (i just don't think that there will ever be such masterpieces as they were), but even after all this ranting, i'm still anticipating a nice post-apocalyptic themed (RPG, hopefully) game.

It just doesn't feel like Fallout 3, even if i like most of the stuff which is there :(

Lets all make such photographs of us.
Then we pack them together to a zip/rar and email them to bethesda.

That should be a nice way to say: 'Waiting ten years for an orc is kinda disappointing, ye know?'

Will someone get rid of these fucking "open-minded" trolls?

Damn it, if they aren't some of the most idiotic people I've had the misfortune to know.

Every little stupid thing comes to their mind, is valid to them because of open-mindness.

Being open-minded doesn't mean you have to accept every shit. Not every opinion is valid. Not everything is acceptable.
But, what can you teach some kids raised in front of a TV that preaches absurdities like these.

And, you, that guy with "ZOMG, I WANTZ TO BE SO CONTROVERSIAL!! I BUY 10 FALLOUTZ 3!!!1" - you are not needed on this planet. Please keep that money, buy a gun and blow your useless brain off.

That's interesting. Of course here maybe a lot of NMA dwellers "were here before the fall(out)" :), but I too discovered Fallout by word of mouth.
I discovered it I think in 1997, 1998, while I was down to the head in old-games-I-used-to-play-at-a-friend's (Tie Fighter, Syndicate), and sequel-to-old-games-I-used-to... (Tie Collector, Syndicate Wars) and a bunch of new games (yeah, Q2, Half-Life and its multiplayer games :)).

I very reluctantly let a guy I knew tell me about Fallout when he used the words "RPG" : I had this vision of D&D computer RPG which the same old stories, same old character types "ok, so I chose either a Barbarian, a Dwarf, a Mage or .... a Priest or a Thief, woohoooo". RPGs by then related to me to the "same old heroic fantasy ... which was ok when I was a kid".

Once I was convinced by arguments like "wasteland ala Mad Max, violence, complete freedom, 50s SF background, try-it-FFS-or-I'll-break-your-teeth", I was hooked since the intro and my first steps in the wasteland as Max Stone ( hey, what did you expect from a then quake player ?).

I've tried too since then to spread the good words ...

Lawl, that picture made me chuckle a little. I don't have a picture of my initial reaction, but I imagine it looked something like this...
