They don't target us at all. Actually, except GI and few other magazines or sites, nobody even covers Fallout, so I wonder how many will buy it because it's Fallout(some) and how many will buy it because it's Bethesda(a lot).

Ok, the combat sounds iffy, the quests sound possibly they're getting the direction right, but my concern, my major concern, is that, uh, where's the fallout vibe? The 50s thing isn't just something you use in the intro. The game was never meant to be photorealistic, the mutants were meant to be what comic-book kids would imagine mutants to look like, in these screenshots, seems they're really going for the grey washed-out feel of standard PA. This article has not really lifted my confidence.
'nearly impossible' to unlock all achievements...
and I dunno if it's been said, but going on a quest to find your father is rather cliche. Hopefully there's a twist - and NOT THAT HE'S THE MAIN BAD GUY PLEASE GOD NO - that makes it non-standard.

There's stuff in there to like, but.... where's the Fallout in those screens?

:/ :/ :/

I wonder if even after this, people will say Bethesda has the talent (ahahahahaha!) to create a good Fallout 3.

There you go, the amazing Bethesda.

They don't even have the artistic talent needed. It all looks like shit.

And I really am disappointed some are willing to accept this.
It's either Fallout or it's not. I thought we didn't do compromises?

I've got to agree with you. I want a third installment to the series not some knock off with the same name. According to many that makes me a nut case... So be it,I can't wait play Star Craft 2 Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles FPS. Wouldn't that pwn way more than any sequel to the original series?

You may not get the Fallout you want but be thankful you don't get the fallout you DESERVE

Harsh and bitter words.

They don't even have the artistic talent needed. It all looks like shit.

All they had to do was copy the artistic style in Fallout. They had proffessional artists, they had the game and everything else that went with it. Why is that so difficult?

Locked into a 19 yr old looking for his daddy is also a roleplaying concern. I don't want to be no emo kid. I'd like to think dialoguye would let us choose our own reasons for being out there - 'I dont give a shit about my father'
'I want to kill my father'
etc.

At least let us change the age.

Exactly, I'm reminded of Morrowind with this intro this magazine suggests. I'm not sure if what they saw will be the actual intro, I have not read the articles in their entirety. So far I have been disappointed to an extent.

Edit: It's late, I oogled at Jessica Alba tonight... I've got work in the morning... Forgive the above post for its most likely to be incomprehensible. blah

First off, I respect everyone's opinion and I'm not slamming anyone...but don't you guys (and gals) think you might be a little quick on the draw? Maybe everything some of you have said will be true....maybe not. This is literally the first notable preview of this incarnation of F3.

If you've waited this long for your next dose of fallout, are you really going to dismiss it with that much haste? You gotta give it time. Who knows, maybe this preview is slanted and it isn't exposing the F3 demo for what it is. Maybe that's not a warhammer but a pipe with a compact flange and T junction. Maybe "disconnected third-person" means you can move the camera wherever you want as long as it focuses on the player. Maybe VATS will work maybe it won't. It's all conjecture until each of us fans try it.

Thank you Tannhauser, for posting a link to the Gems article. Although I haven't read it in it's entirety, it is very good and I think I see the true value as it pertains to this post. (All following quotes from the article) Fans drive many forms of entertainment in this world and they ALWAYS have the right to voice their opinion. "The bitterness of a fan group is often a measure of its loyalty and devotion." Absolutely. "Fallout Fans have been committed to the integrity of the game as established by Fallout 1." 100%.

The notion of an "imagined franchise" can be applied to higher level groupings as well like genres. A perfect example is the Adventure game genre. Trials and tribulations like that of the Fallout franchise have existed in the Adventure game genre since its roots and still continue today. This time period is well over 25 years. Situations like this are not new and exist in every facet of our lives. Movies, Music, Books, Sports...there's always an underground. And, unfortunately, the vast majority of the time it is about money.

As fans we always have the power to at least attempt to give feedback to developers (and publishers for that matter) as an "imagined community." If you're a true fan of the originals, then show it and give it all you got (not that we haven't already.) I will always be a fan of the originals and that will never change no matter what F3 is or what the future holds. I understand everything that is going on with Fallout these days is controversial and it will continue to be. All I can say is that the fans always make up the community and we should never give up on the things we enjoy and cherish. Each attempt that is made to "potentially" cater to us, should be taken with consideration until we can see for ourselves.

Sam and Max is a perfect example. The first game premiered in 1993 after a good run of comics 6 years before....then nothing for 9 years...then a possible game got canceled...then nothing for 4 years. As an Adventure game "snob", I was ecstatic when the new incarnation arrived even though it was episodic and 3D, which is not how classic adventures are supposed to work. However, after almost completing the first season, I think the entire production is right up there with the original and even maintains the same feel as the original comics from the 80s.

This is the first sign of what's coming. Just have patience and be optimistic....but keep that Turbo Plasma Rifle by your side just in case...

...the Road Warrior walks through Brazil in la Cité des enfants perdus...

If it's not actually Fallout, then yeah.

Why is the super mutant wielding a FANTASY WAR HAMMER?

This is not aimed at you directly Bluurg.
But Even I who knows very very little about cars and engines saw that it is not a "warhammer" or any kind of hammer..
it is a part form a car or other engine-drived vehicle called
Differential.
I admit they've messed up on making it shiny.. a part from a car that has been nuked should not be that shiny.

This is the only picture I found about what it is... they come in various chapes and sizes...

I know many of you have been waiting for a really long long time for this game to be made, I've been waiting to.
But, no offence, some of you are really really trying hard to find every flaw that you can imagine from every little bit of info you get.

I do share some of your concerns. I do hope they lean more to the strategic part of battle instead of action..
more use of AP instead of real-time mouse-aiming.

I for one will wait until the game get's out until I praise or bash .. or have no reaction at all to the game.

I have an alternative description of the combat system by imposing my previous theory on the article description and it seems to work.

V.A.T.S. is designed to prevent twitch-gaming, ‘doesn't become an FPS. "We don't want to be rewarding twitch play,"’ so allowing one to ignore AP and make "normal attacks" for free wouldn’t make sense. Again, the ability to target locations or make better considered choices is unessential and wouldn’t effectively discourage FPS. Targeting and real-time modes would need to be switchable for different circumstances, so you can jump between them without difficulty. Now, changing AP regeneration rates based on the action/s being performed would be complicated and could be open to abuse. E.g. as long as there was a constant small rate of AP regeneration, you could fight frantically in RT and intermittently try some targeted shots without a break in pace, although this would usually be redundant as before. Therefore, real time actions consume AP as well, a simpler way to ‘dramatically slow the recharge of your action points’ which are essential to stop twitch-gaming. Thus, "normal" mode is CTB. You would have to stop acting, or running, and wait while AP’s ‘regenerate in real time at a rate that also corresponds with your agility.’ V.A.T.S. is the targeting mode, but a crucial question is whether you can move in it as well, like in the original Fallouts, which would make the combat system CTB + pause-TB.

Does my reasoning follow? Talking with people who have seen the game would be helpful.

... but the Daedric Nuclear Handheld Catapult Of Doom +7 kinda ruins the conception.

Yeah that's what I said 10 posts ago.

Stupid people whining about fantasy warhammers and shit. Whine about the combat system. It's gonna suck.

The rest looks ok though.

I guess this is only some small part of what actually will suck in F3.

They are just not capable of doing good RPGs.

I bet this game is going to be worse than Oblivion.

- visually stunning, captured the 'gritty' feeling better than i imagined they would. the 50's feel is lacking though in most screens, but it is a work in progress.

- degrading weaponry: we all saw how fubar that could get in STALKER, i do hope they implement repairkits (in differing qualities, from patchupjob to refurbish)

- blowing up a car with nuclear generator motor by shooting the engine? what?

- Pipboy 3000 looks a little more STALKER-ish than Fallout-ish.

- supermutant looks like shit to me. (as does his shiny weapon, make it gritty if it's a differential ffs)

- VATS is too early to comment on, we simply don't know enough. it might 'work', but even if that is the case, i think TB is still far superior. either way, chances are it'll suck donkeydick.

- Fatman? handheld nuclear catapult? oh please...

- drinking water to regain health? ugh. to fight dehydration, sure, but come on... can't cure wounds with water.

- uniforms: baggy in the 50's? (personally i hate closefitting clothes, but in FO the whole point was to have it a lil' weird 50's style)

in short: i'd be pumped & excited (to explore a gritty world and wait for people to mod the shit out of it, literally) if this was a 'hors serie' Fallout like FO:Tictacs, but this is FO3. as such, i feel mostly betrayed and let down.

Looks like the demo was played on the XBox. Primary developing platform, anyone? Anyone?
realistically, you cant blame them too much for that. it is simply easier. however, you can blame the shit out of them if they don't mod the PC version to have a better interface & 'better' aiming etc.

nothing keeps us from commenting on what we see as wrong stooge. but regardless of what you think, we'll give FO3 a fair chance when it is out.

For those who don't get why a lot of us are mocking their supermutent wannabe, here is a quick lineup of the real deal, their interpretation, and an Orc from Oblivion.

Note the pronounced chin on Marcus, the scaley skin and massively different head proportions/shape. All they had to do was look at the FO1/2 heads and copy them, but oh no - they had to place 'their' mark on them... Sure these gripes are all small ones, but when the core gameplay is so radically different these little things add up. They are all that is left to tie the game to the Fallout universe, every little fudge they make with the details pushes the game that bit further away from what made FO, FO.

Major problems + worries:
- Stupid crap orc is not a supermutant... WAY too colourful and doesn't look like it was once human. Also, why isn't it hunching over like supermutants did in FO?
- <strike>Silver warhammer taken straight out of oblivion is not a</strike> sledgehammer... it's too clean <strike>and is all metal... at the very least the handle should be wooden.</strike>
- Fat Man nuclear catapult? Seriously, bethsoft, that's just stupid. :x I could cope if it was depleted uranium rounds or something but no, this is a catapult, and it launches something which causes a tiny nuclear explosion, complete with mushroom cloud... stupid.
- Deus Ex style pipboy interface looks nothing like the pipboy interface should. (looks modern scifi, not 50's scifi)
- pipboy itself looks like it was taken out of the packet 6months ago, not like it's been in use for 200 years.
- Quality of dialogue suspect. "That's not the way it works. And it won't do to go around asking questions like that. Especially not around the Overseer." Come on Bethsoft! In English, we NEVER use "and" capitalised or after a full stop, that whole middle sentence sounds unrealistic and forced, it would be better to be "Don't go around asking questions like that" or something... I'm not good at dialogue, but I know what I like... We want well written dark humoured dialogue. I hope it's there. Oh, and dark humoured does not mean full of cruel jokes, it means irony and subtlety, humour from absurdity and subtle references to pop culture, just in case you've got the wrong idea, bethsoft.
- Traits are gone (possibly)? Why?

Other concerns:
- V.A.T.S sounds pretty strange... waiting around for action points? that sounds pretty stupid... it might work I guess.
- So what about the dialogue system? Are they going to use that PoS that was in oblivion, or are they going to use a decent system like in fallout, arcanum or planescape torment
- cliché main quest?
- fixed starting age.
- Why can't we just do character creation in one go?
- slow motion for near misses could get really annoying.

Good things:
- consequences to actions (promised, not delivered yet)
- multiple endings (promised, not delivered yet)
- GORE!!! hahahaha ;)
- Different game play styles available yay for sneaking, yay for diplomacy, yay for tech tricks. etc.
- "shades of grey"
- for the most part, decent looking armour and weapons (aside from with the orc)
- Good looking environment in the vault, mostly decent looking environment outside it (although, they look more Jericho or S.T.A.L.K.E.R. than Fallout).

What we can do to try and improve it:
- Make a list of the main points we think are wrong, get lots of people to put their names to it, take it to bethsoft.
- mod the shit out of it when it comes out. (literally)
- mod good stuff in.

my two caps.

*VATS seems to me as a TB and when you're out of APs (end of turn) it goes RT not to wait for each character to make it's move in turn. then it may not suck too much.
BUT. What's the number in the screenshot with that orc-mutie in the right lower corner? 5 of 495? APs? oh please, I hope it's not. CTB? RTwP-TB? that WILL suck.

*Vault suits.. hm.. not too bad for me. could be better tho.

*Pip-boy thingie. What the? I don't like to see my character description and items in green.

*Interface. Why the fuck fix what is not broken? Where are my HP and AC counters? where's my textbox? (oh well, should I ever expect that from Bethesda?). That was part of the style, of the freakin immersion. dammit. that's for consoles. fuck 360.

*landscapes are nice.

*Mutated orc with a daedric hammer? The sledges in FO were big and double-handed. and what's that? a hammer for meat? and why the bloom? oh, that's holy mutated orc, I see.

*G.O.A.T.? bah. And the test result is: You are a real GOAT.

*character creation is TES-styled. In original FOs you haven't had too much background. and too much storybased, not sure if I like it. reaching level cap and ending? hmm...
