General Gaming Megathread: What are you playing?

It's a great followup, but Civ4 is probably just a liiitle bit better. Civ5 simplifies a lot of stuff, which is good for some things and bad for others. My biggest gripe is the absence of "automate worker" function. Combat got a lot better, the "no stacking" makes air units a lot more useful to obtain early. The resources make more sense now - they aren't unlimited like in Civ4. Not sure I like the idea of "leveling up" civics, but at least it's something different.

Oh, and it requires internet connection to play; there's a "fanmade patch" for that already though.
I think Civ 5 is clearly a different game from Civ 4, too. The approach they took to design was very different - Civ 4 was crammed full of features that made it a lot more complicated, Civ 5 is a lot more focused and streamlined. They managed to make it tactically a lot more interesting, though the AI needs improvement, and I feel like there's a much bigger difference in terms of strategy from playthrough to playthrough for me than there was in Civ 4.

I can see why some people won't like that and won't like some of the changes, though.

I also heard that they removed the whole 'spaceship' screen which I find really sad as I love the space race victory, seeing how the spaceship is being assembled.

The victory is still there, I think the conditions might me a bit different from civ4, I can't comment on the spaceship screen since I never went for the science victory.

Its good that they made some improvements and made some elements simpler to use but the whole simplification of elements sounds like a downgrade.

Well, from what I heard from a friend who's a much bigger Civ junkie than I am when I was showing him the game, he said it looked like they got a lot of things back from Civ3. I can't say that's a bad thing. It's also not "simplified", just "different". I think that where it loses in removing some old elements it gains by introducing new ones - like the city-states for example.

And the music in this one is just great. Each nation gets its own tracks in national style, that progress with the era and change depending on whether you're at war or peace. I was playing Rome last night and pretty much got to track the history of classical music from early baroque to modern-day.

Also remember that it's the vanilla version, I'm sure there'll be lots more content as they release addons for it.

Also, the internet connection demand, ugh.

There's a crack for that.

Seriously though, it's best to play the game first and then read reviews ;) Especially if you have it already.

Currently replaying ME2 with DLC. I must say, as much as i usually dislike DLC, Bioware did a really good job with the Overlord one. Very athmospheric and a neat and tense final battle. I also heard good things about the Lair of the Shadow Broker, but I am not that far yet.

Also working on KOTOR 2 with restored content mods. The amount of cut content now shown gets crazy towards the end, but it now becomes much more clear to read and satisfying to play.

About Civ5, I must say I like most of the changes (hexes, 1 unit per spot and limited strategic resources being the best imo). I miss Civics however, Social Policies are nice and all but I sure miss turning on State Property and seeing my income double and my production skyrocket in one single click. Maybe that is actually the very reason they changed it all, too. City States are sweet, but need more development, especially to fix the fact the best way to get influence is really to dump massive amounts of gold on them. Finally, the guy doing the quotes has absolutely nothing on good ol' Spock. 8-). Overall a worthy addition to the franchise. :salute:

I tried out Civ 5 since I've heard you people talk about it.
I played civ 4 in the past too and both of them gave me a bitter taste. Am I doing it wrong? Or why would anyone bother to play any of these games for more than a few hours?
I find them boring.

Other than that, I'm still playing Minecraft like crazy.

Because they're fun and addictive games. Except not for you. Apparently, you don't enjoy that type of game. Sucks for you.

I can't say I don't like that type of game.
I played Rise of Nations long ago, kind of liked it, but I can't remember it that well, maybe I'll give it a shot again and play it again these days. I know that's not turn based, but it has that same "researching" bit.
But for a turnbased game, I choose Rome Total War. One of the best games I've ever played.

Total War games aren't really comparable. They revolve around the real-time battles on a small level and a relatively short timespan to build your empire. Civilization games don't care about the minute details of field battles and focus on the empire-building itself on a much larger scale.

Finished ArcaniA: Gothic 4 demo. Man, I'm rather disappointed - during the hour or so of my playtime I was presented with a rather uninteresting dialogue and story, sent on two extremely boring dungeon crawls and forced to do some not so interesting fighting.

Still, it's hard to judge the game based on that short time with it.

As opposed to, say, Gothic 3 ?

That's funny. The only "interesting" thing I remember from Gothic 3 is the exploration of the varied landscapes... Dialogue, story, and combat sucks.

Didn't seem to me that one could be disappointed by JoWood in this regard anymore. I was almost certain it would be this way. I'm not even interested in trying the demo, let alone the full game.
I'll just wait for Risen 2 and then maybe another real Gothic game from Piranha Bytes.

Finished my Morrowind save, so now I'm going to try and slog my way through Oblivion again.

I've never been able to complete Oblivion, so I'm determined to beat it this time. My previous playthroughs always ended in me running around doing random quests and then just saying fuck it after the level scaling got out of control (almost every quest-related enemy is tagged to be your level +1-5, so there is literally zero progression) and handed all the humanoid enemies full sets of Glass/Daedric armor.

Finally got Dead Space after waiting for it for a week and a half.
And I love it.
Sure most of it is pop-up terror but it still keeps me all tense and paranoid that a monster is gonna throw himself out of a ventilation shaft just behind me.

Played Left 4 Dead 2 for the first time in a long while with honorable NMA members. Good fun even though my zombie killing skills are a little rusty and my mind a bit hazy.

Aaah, that was you. Good fun indeed! :ok:

Back to an oldie but a goodie, Close Combat Cross of Iron. Well, 2007 so it's not that old but the mods are even newer.

CC CoI is a good example of a game that got many things just right. I'm not at all interested in games such as Company of Heroes etc., I like my RTS simple and top down with nice crisp graphics.

Out of curiosity, are there any other gamers here who still play Borderlands and its DLCs?

I have been considering to pick up Left 4 Dead 2 but I fear it will consume even more of my time should I get a taste for it.

I play Borderlands (PC) occasionally (haven't finished the DLCs yet) and am enjoying L4D2 again after a very long break.

Feel free to add me on Steam if you want: TheDeadTexan/PDM

edit: I see L4D2 is practically free until Thursday 4pm (PST) (6,79€) :)
