General Gaming Megathread: What are you playing?

Alice: Madness Returns

Shortly before starting this one, I played American Mcgee's Alice which was simply awful in terms of gameplay and only finished the game just for pure sake. Suffice to say that I will never end up playing that game again. Even for the time in which this was released, there were a lot of problematic aspects with the gameplay and most in particular the platformer aspects. Madness Returns is leagues better and while I have heard complaints about the gameplay, I don't see anything in particular worth having gripes about so far. That isn't to say that it's spectacular, but rather just good. It feels fairly standard in combat and platforming.

Also played a bit of Silent Hill: Downpour, which I have to say is better than I expected with the exception of the Otherworld sections. I made it past the second Otherworld section in the Centennial building and it's rather abysmal that most of the time spent in those sections is running away from a void trying to suck you in. Other than that my only other complaint is breakable weapons. Not that I have a particular issue with the fundamental aspects of breakable weapons, but it is rather a pain when you can only hold one melee weapon at a time and it ends up breaking in the middle of a fight. The graphics are also really sub-par because I look at it and it feels no better looking than SH3. Can't say it is particularly scary either, but I don't know if that is because I've gotten used to playing these types of games or if because it's poorly done.

Interchanging between TONS of DOTA2 and Dead Space 2. Basically depends whether I wanna play something on my PC, or my PS3.

Couple weeks ago while rifling through my stacks of PS3 titles, I unearthed my copies of DS and DS2 and figured I ought to give them another run. I wanted to get "the full Dead Space experience" somehow, so I elected to beat each game sequentially on their respective toughest settings, Impossible and Hardcore... again. Because it was far easier, I cleared DS on Impossible with no hiccups, and I was impressed by how well the game still held up, 4 years later. Still awesome atmosphere, still a great story. With Hardcore on DS2... different story.

I not only decided to play the game on its hardest setting (which removes any and all checkpoints, and restricts you to ONLY 3 saves for the entire run), but I opted to avoid ALL of the special unlocks I'd amassed. I've got the hilarious Hand Canon from already clearing Hardcore (game-breaking, but funny as shit), pre-order and DLC weapons and suits, the CE Zealot Force Gun (best weapon in the game), and a myriad of other unlocks, all free at the first store, which quickly overpowers Isaac if one were to indulge in any of them, so I decided I was going to play the game as if I had no such freebies. MAN that ramps up the difficulty something crazy! And I love it! =D I haven't managed to make it far enough to burn my first save, but the intensity is palpable. I sure hope DS3 won't be watered down and still feel this tense...

And I regularly torture myself with matches of DOTA2, wherein I find I'm the only competent player on the team 19 times out of 20 games, but damn it if I can't put the game down for more than a day! So rich and well-designed, even if the community is infested with pricks and LoL-trolls...

Mount and Blade, Warband,
Its delicious monotony has me retardedly obsessed lately. This happens in waves, and in a week or so, I'll probably be totally sick of it. But it's fun how many different strategies there are to this very open sandboxy game. Whenever I get on a roll, I tend to start several new games, and play a couple of hours on each one,
one where I go right ahead, creating my own kingdom as soon as possible -
another where I dedicate myself to be a faithful vassal - with no intentions of ruling the land, instead taking good care of my fiefs, totally roleplaying!
Another where I insist on collecting "peasant woman" and being that one knight lord with his army of female amazones :D
One where I surgically, and un-roleplayerishly recruit - send out to gather "right to rule" for then to disband "heroes" from my team.

All this, in the slow, oh-so-slow gameplay, and soothing background music. Sigh :]

Rented Dishonored. Very good game so far, if not a bit short. Plenty of replay value though. Looks to be a Game of the Year contender. Definitely one of the best stealth titles in recent memory.

Edit: Beat it in 18 hours. No New Game +!? Time to turn it back in to the Redbox..

I'd advise you try the High Chaos path in a later playthrough. It's also plenty of fun, and unlike in other games of the genre (say, Deus Ex) it's tough and feels rewarding.

It IS a bit on the short side. Could have used 1 or 2 more assasination missions earlier in the game.

As for me, back to Skyrim, believe it or not. While there are typical Bethesda elements that annoy me (Radiant Story is quite simply a giant waste of code), it's pretty, it plays well unless you go pure mage, and it's open world in an age of linear, corridor games. I also still haven't done a good part of the content, namely the College storyline, so there's still new stuff in there. Also, anybody tried the Dawnguard DLC? Is it worth the hefty price tag?

Still haven't given up on ME3 multiplayer, however. I finally got the Turian with a jetpack, and it is pure awesome.

I got the chaos ending because I ran through the last two missions like a lunatic, plus I killed a few innocent people for the lulz. I had 10 bodies piled up in one spot near the end. I figured, it's time to beat this and turn it back in. I hope to see a decent sequel with more content. I'm sure the DLC will be a couple missions or something simple like that. Who knows though?

They have announced the DLCs, in fact. The first is a non story related challenge pack, like those Arkham City got. Sneak by this building, kill these guards, ect. The other two are story-driven, with the first of these being centered around Daud the assassin. They don't release until like next March however, IIRC.

The new Counter Strike - Global Offensive - is available for a free download at Steam. I jumped on the train and... well, was pretty disappointed.

Horrible menus, horrible HUD - and the game's biggest failure, mouse controls. I'm serious. Who thought of this crap? Such bullshit.

Just started Borderlands 2. I got it free with my new video card from EVGA. It's not exactly mind stretching, but worth a few giggles so far.

As I got a PS2 a few months ago or so, I decided to get the very first Timesplitters game (which is PS2 exclusive) after having played the second game in the series so very long ago on my Gamecube (and loving it to bits).

After completing the first game and many of its challenges and playing a bit of arcade, I would say that the series really got good starting with the second game in the series, very much so a good example of 'growing the beard'. The missions were basic and simple, just shoot guys in your way to the end of a level, pick up an object associated with the time-frame and go back to the start again (although higher difficulties changed where you had to run back to). Arcade was incredibly fun though, it's just a shame I have nobody to actually play it with, nobody wants to exactly come round just to play split-screen on a PS2 game because those kind of times have gone.

Overall, an average game. Definitely not as good as the second game, but the zany and whacky characters in the game are just awesome. I would maybe start talking about how much I love the multiplayer and my hopes for a fourth game in the series but that's probably best left for another thread? This one was just to tell you what game I'm playing.

I used to love Timesplitters. The level creator was pretty impressive at the time, especially on a console. Me and my friend made some pretty trippy levels with all the flashing lights and crap like that. I wish they would make a modern day sequel that didn't suck. Give those CoD clones a run for their money ya know? What do we have to work with nowadays with FPS on the consoles? Halo or CoD style shooters. So unimpressive and boooring. I'm only considering getting Halo 4 because my friends are so hard up to play the shit. Man I need new friends j/k.... seriously tho.

playing through FO:NV again, this time with the J.E Sawyer mod. Its pretty cool. Giant Cazadors and Giant Manti are stupidly deadly though.

Wow, it's still $20,00? Yeah it might be worth 10, but definitely not 20. It adds some items, vampire lord and makes werewolf mode playable but the main quest just drops some lore and there, makes you walk a lot and kill way too many falmer, and it's the same quests on both sides. Bethesda has fallen so low in the writing department that people are actually praising them for that emo vampire chick witth daddy issues they added in this dlc.

But still, I also recently reinstalled Skyrim. With a great enb it looks great, and it's a great timewaster for when I don't feel like playing NV or something.

Dawnguard, to me at least, is worth it only for Laura Bailey, the dragonbone weapons and maybe for the bloodcursed arrows effects (which are pretty cool).
Other than that, meh.

She has daddy and mommy issues, also a bit of a Mary Sue. The vampire hunters don't kill her purely because the new guy who just joined only has two ways of saying "Please don't kill her, she's plot important" and nothing else, them choices and consequences.

I played on the vampire side, so I didn't have that problem.

Wouldn't the dragonborn be the mary sue in this case, as he's the one who somehow convinced a bunch of hardened vampire hunters to not kill a vampire?

Well, the player always has the best of everything and always seems to succeed no matter what is thrown at them, (you know, because you start over from another save or checkpoint) and your character is whatever you want, so yeah. The Player character is the biggest mary sue in all games. Almost. I haven't played every single game in the catalogue, so I dunno...
