General Gaming Megathread: What are you playing?

Played and finished Halo 4 yesterday.

In general a very entertaining game and I am glad that they ditched the Flood.
Liked them in Halo 1, 2 and 3 but I am honestly sick of zombies and parasites.

I also like the Metroid Prime look of some of the environments and the new enemies but some stuff like the presence of the Covenant aliens felt rather tacked on.

A shame the campaign was rather short though, they really should have put in some more material.

I think a 8 or a 8.5 is more than a reasonable rating for this game, little or no visible, in general working gameplay, nice new environments and some new tunes, but it doesn't innovate the genre or the series that much and there were quite some plotholes in the campaign.

I find it rather ridiculous that some people rate the game 9.5, 9.8, or even 9.9.
For a game to get such a high rating it should completely have to redefine a genre or create a complete new one.

I'm also just starting to get into The Legend of Zelda. I'm currently on A Link To The Past for the GBA. I just recently completed The Legend of Zelda and Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link which were GBA ports as well. Jesus, Zelda 2 doesn't fuck around. That is one hard as nails game.

Agreed. I see it getting perfect scores and it hurts my brain. It doesn't really change the formula much. Every RL friend I have is playing that the shit online right now. I feel like the fucking "Grinch Who Hates What Everyone Else Likes". I feel compelled to buy it just to have something to talk about with them.

I'm playing GTA 4 to hold me over until I decide. Killing hookers is my only hope.

ODST's got a little low compared to the others, odd really as it had a good story and actual memorable characters. Reach fixed that problem though.

Hello all,

I mostly played the games because they are sci fi shooters and I am a big fan of games with a sci fi setting.

Years ago I bought the first game from a budget bin when I traded in some games, I finished it but thought not much of it at the time and moved on with other PC games.

But as the sci fi pool, especially FPS games started to dry up I decided to have another look at the series.
I know they are cliché and that Bungie pretty much stole all the ideas from other science fiction movies, series, and literature, but it can still be entertaining sometimes.

I just don't think it deserves all the ridiculous praise the fans give it and I find the spin off material vastly overrated.
Basically sci fi military porn for a lack of better word, that is why I don't read any of the comics and books.
I also find it ridiculous that people are expected to read the books to get the complete story rather than that they just add optional material.

Some stuff like the driving is handled in a fun way but there are plenty of other things I feel the series could have improved upon over the years.

For one the levels despite their 'size' sometimes feel rather short.
A bit more non linearity would be nice, alternative paths.

Campaigns in general are also minimal if you compare it to some of the story oriented FPS games on the PC.

I still don't like the whole 'you can only carry two guns at a time' gameplay element. (in MP mode I can understand that but let us carry more than two guns in the main game, this notion that console users can't handle more than two weapons is ridiculous)

While I played ODST and Reach both liked them (I have no problem with ODST SP unlike some people) I do rate them a bit lesser than the main games as I rather enjoyed the high sci fi mystery elements that broke up what otherwise would be just military sci fi.

I really enjoyed seeing more again of the Forerunners (ancient alien super race in the series) I do feel the setting is getting somewhat ridiculous with the ret conning that is being done in the books in order to 'expand' the universe.

A lot of that material was not necessary to make Halo 4 work, its not like that is a literature master piece. Even with a more complex background the main villain is still pretty much 2 dimensional in general.

As I said earlier and as most have concluded, the Halo games certainly don't deserve the high rates and unquestionable praise it gets but I think its an entertaining sci fi FPS series on the console and shouldn't automatically be seen as bad just because its raised to ridiculous heights by Xbox gamers.

Better to have tried it and dislike it just because it does not entertain you than ignore it because a lot of mouth breathers think its the best thing ever.

I can honestly say I've never played a Halo game before in my life, even when I owned an Xbox 360. Or a Gears of War game.

I really liked Halo 2. It was the game to play in Iraq. Our barracks had a shitty LAN hooked up, so we played against another company a little bit. I never enjoyed the campaigns on those games though. Multiplayer was where it was at. I prefer Halo over CoD I suppose, but I am looking forward to another popular shooter taking their place. Sooner rather than later I hope.

Yeah, I know they plan to make a Halo 5 and 6 but imo they pretty much made this game self contained. If they never made another sequel after it it would not be a problem. (it would sort of serve as a epilogue to the previous 3 games, finishing a few loose ends here and there)

But honestly, after they have done 5 and 6 I think they should 'retire' the series and move on with a new IP.
They are already overmilking the franchise now.

But we could really do with some new shooter franchises, ones that do help reinvigorate the genre and push it somewhat forward again.

For one, I would like to see them going back to less linear SP campaigns.

I would like to see another Quake Arena, Doom 4, a good Duke Nukem sequel, or a new ip that hearkens back to the shooters of yore. I am so sick of leveling up my character to get new skills and weapons, like in Halo 4 or CoD style shooters. What happened to circle strafing the hell out of people while hopping around dodging rockets? What happened to power ups hidden throughout the levels that vastly increase your chance of survival? Quad Damage anyone? How about fighting up close and personal without worrying about a bunch of snipers picking your ass off? Sure you can restrict the weapons that drop and shit like that, but the past 6 or 7 CoD games have been almost exactly alike. Oh wow, you can spawn a helicopter to kill people. That was cool for a month or two. Oh boy, a nuke that destroys everyone. Epic.

I want a new style of shooter. It doesn't have to be like Quake or Unreal Tournament, I would prefer something all together different honestly. Sure you have some titles like Darkness 2, but they never attract a large enough user base. Duke Nukem Forever actually had a decent multiplayer going except for the constant dropouts and crap like that. It was pretty damn vicious at times. I enjoyed it for the two weeks it was playable, yet it was a disappointment overall, and could have been done better. Of course, it was amazing the game was ever released at all. I beat it on hard just to torture myself and prove that I could do it.

Name a couple of first person shooters that aren't Halo or CoD clones. I'm finding difficulties thinking of any. I always liked Battlefield. I played the hell out of part two on the pc, but it came down to grenade throwing frenzies a lot. To me, Battlefield is the way CoD style shooters should be, yet I can't even play Battlefield anymore because I'm so sick of the sameness. It leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I want to kill my friends in glorious combat, but I can't get into any of the titles that are out. Gears of War? Don't care for it. I appreciate it being a different style of shooter, but it doesn't appeal to me. A lot of the new IP's that are attempting to offer something different get tossed to the wayside because of Halo, CoD clones, and GoW.

I did like Quake Wars for the pc a bit. I'm struggling to remember the game that was similar to that...at any rate, I will be buying Halo 4 just to play with the few friends I do have in RL, because I want to smash their faces into the dirt, teabag them into oblivion, and tell them how much I hate the game, and quit playing it. It might get rid of some of the repressed FPS rage that I need to unleash on the mindless masses of moronic miscreants. Maybe they will convert me while I'm at it. Maybe I am the moron?

Haha moron.

Any FPS that is mainstream will suck for me. For me it isn't the game, it's the people online playing it. I got my childish FPSing out of my system a long time ago. Yes, I talked too much on comms, and yes I was an opinionated naive prick. (I didn't go around calling everyone a nigger, thats a new one. ) Anyway, I hate these kids. Not all of them but you know those kids. Part of it is disdain in general but the more real aspect I quickly picked up on once I got older was the realization that I used to be one of those shitheads! It's one of those Jebus facepalm moments I go through every time I play a big FPS.

Anyway if it doesn't have a lean button lean me the hell alone.

Anyway, New Vegas. Mods are like crack, and the game is only going to take so much before it dies of overdose.

That's why I'm so hoping that they decide to make a fourth Timesplitters. I'd take a random team of monkeys entering the map and helping you get some kills over a helicopter killstreak reward anyday. The powerups in 2 kicked ass! Like the cloak powerup that made you invisible. It was awesome having such a variety of characters to choose playing as, Space Marine, Elvis Impersonator, Zombies, monkeys, police detectives, a gingerbread man, a robot with a fishbowl for a head. I much preferred that to a mook where all I can change is his facepaint.

I'm telling you man, it would be one of the most epic multiplayer games ever!

And you're in luck, there is a Doom 4 on the way. Bethesda are making it, here's hoping they don't fuck it up.

Isn't that kind of like asking a clown not to make a fool of himself while being in the middle of a cake bakery while somebody accidentally dropped a box of roller skates and banana peels?

Anyway, Id is handling it but their last releases have been more technical demos than games that really stand good on their own legs.

Doom 3 and Resurrection of Evil were good for one playthough at least but Rage which is more advanced is such a repetitive thing that people probably felt quite relieved when they finished it, or not even bothered as it felt rather unrewarding.
It wasn't exactly a gripping game.

Perhaps Id should consider letting another team do the actual game while they focus on the technical aspects of development.

I just hope Doom 4 is more like the original games. ID kinda done goofed when they copied System Shock 2 when they were making Doom 3.

That would actually be neat. I doubt they would be able to sell it as a full game but as a technical demonstration of the engine and a nice little old school budget price game that could work.
